I think you are missing some of the nuance of how God saves us so that we can do things that glorify him. Look at Ephesians 2:8-10 for a clear Biblical explanation of this. The Epistle of James argues against a dead faith. Sometimes James is misused to support a works based salvation, but the misuse does not negate the proper use. Most don’t want to do Gods will.. they avoid dying to self which is what the gospel calls for. Reformed Baptist here (1689 London Baptist Confession). I embrace reformed theology but I do not believe in the Presbyterian view of Baptism and especially the infant baptism. Salvation is by faith alone and baptism is just a public declaration of identifying with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection or the public profession of faith. It is not something that saves you. But if you are saved, you should want to obey Christ and be baptized.

    • @joshuasy10
      @joshuasy10 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I think you're position is reasonable given your understanding of baptism, but those who affirm infant baptism don't think it's just an outward proclaimation, they tie it with being cleansed from original sin and the focus is less on them as an individual, but more of a symbol of being brought into a new family, hense the obvious comparison with circumcision in the old covenant. There's also the fact that as far as I know all of Christendom has practiced infant baptism until relatively recently, and right now Catholic, Orthodox, and major Protestant denominations affirm it. How do you deal with these points?

    • @caseycardenas1668
      @caseycardenas1668 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@joshuasy10I think this topic is far more complex than many people realize.
      Prior to Augustine, it seems that Baptism had vast variety in terms of practice and theology. It's interesting to note that there are numerous early Church fathers who were born to Christian families that were not baptized as infants. Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil the Great, and John Chrysostom to name a few.
      On the other end we also have Hippolytus who mentions baptizing children and those who cannot speak for themselves, most likely referring to infants.

    • @JB-em9po
      @JB-em9po 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Baptist idea of baptism being a public declaration is in my opinion partly true. Baptism is best done publicly, but if that’s all it is, you don’t see the apostles going out of their way to make it public. Many of the recorded baptisms are done in relatively private settings. They didn’t wait to get in front of the church body to do it. Instead, baptism should be thought of as the sign of entry to the new covenant. Circumcision was the sign of entry into the old covenant, baptism the sign of the new. Incidentally, if you study how the Old Testament and New Testament refer to circumcision, it was a sign that largely referred to the same spiritual reality as baptism. Yet, the sign given as a seal of righteousness by faith that Abraham had before he was circumcised was also given to his household. The members of his household were given the sign that signified faith, even at 8 days old. Things the line of thinking that led the reformers to accept infant baptism. God redeclares children of believers as covenantally set apart or holy in 1 Cor. 7, so they should receive the sign of the covenant, and the parents should disciple their children from day 1 as believers, praying for fruit and repentance for their children.

      For the Hebrew children, circumcision was not something they did, but something they received. It would be done to them when they were infants, usually on the 8th day. Christening or infant baptism is often done in a similar way, historically sometimes even on the 8th day though it became a topic of debate in the early church where Cyprian argued that it could be done immediately. So on the one hand, if circumcision is a work, then so is even infant baptism; on the other hand, it had become an issue of contention in the very Early Church with respected figures wanting to baptise as soon as possible, which clearly implies they believed it was important even to an infant baby that is unaware of the significance.
      I think the best thing to say is: we are supposed to partake in the sacraments because our Lord and Saviour told us to, just as we are supposed to be kind, charitable, patient, and other things which are clearly good works; but it is faith in our Lord alone that saves. He is sufficient, His sacrifice paid it all, nothing else is necessary, let us not diminish what He achieved on that cross in anyway; yet also, let us obey Him, and do good deeds. Faith comes first, and the works are the evidence of that faith.

    As a Catholic, I don’t understand how someone can use the example of Paul talking against circumcision as a reason to say we don’t need baptism. Yes if you think you need circumcision, Christ is of no use to you BECAUSE circumcision was the requirement of the old covenant, and we are not in the old covenant anymore. Paul also says that baptism replaces circumcision. If circumcision saves you in the old covenant, he seems like he thinks baptism saves you in the new covenant. Regarding the topic of baptism, I feel like if the phrase“i received salvation at baptism” was replaced with the phrase “I received salvation during altar call” some Protestants wouldn’t feel like it’s works-based. If someone from a Protestant perspective believes that baptism can save, I really do feel like they believe it in the same way we would believe that an altar call can bring forth salvation. Not because the physical things in and of themselves have the power to save or that we have the power to save, but because God can use either one to create a genuine faith in Christ alone because this is where Christ is presented to them.
    Also on the topic of works, I definitely understand where Need God is coming from. However, even in Romans 10:9-10 it says that whoever confesses with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believes in their heart, that person shall be saved. I believe that confessing Him as Lord can be viewed as a physical work because that requires you to contract muscles in your faith to physically move your mouth. But I don’t think we would view this as a work if this is done by the leading and guiding of the spirit.
    What I’m getting at is that it is possible based on scripture to be saved at the moment one confesses verbally that Jesus is Lord, even though this could technically be a physical work. BUT if one can be saved at the exact moment of a verbal confession, it would probably be understood that this is because inwardly, that would be the moment one put their faith in Christ. And I think there would be a union between the outward sign (verbal confession) and what is being done inwardly (putting your faith in Christ).
    If all of this is true (and I could be wrong), then to believe like a Lutheran or Anglican that one can be saved in baptism is because faith is the thing which is present and baptism is the mode by which Christ is presented to us, but it is not the only mode. As RZ said, the hearing of the Word of God is another means of grace by which we come to place faith in Christ.

And this is what is signified in the words of the Lord: 'He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.'” - St. Ambrose of Milan (c. 340-397 AD)

    When they talk about by faith alone quoting Matthew... I'm baffled how they completely skipped the first part of the text which reads “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
    When separated, you can make the case either you need faith only, or works only. Taken together, Jesus is making the case that you need both faith & work.
    Faith alone can lie, Work alone will die.

      Typical Protestants standing on their own man made Protestant doctrines. God's church did not fail and become apostate, as Presbyterian and non-denom Christians declare. There is a major misconception in Protestantism when the Bible says that following the Law cannot save you, when every Epistle is referring to the Law of Moses, which was a major dispute in Early Christianity because the former Jews-turned-Christian were telling Christians you still needed to follow the Law of Moses, and many of the Epistles were authoritatively stating that you are not to follow the Law of Moses anymore. But the truth is that you must have faith and follow the Law of Jesus, if you want to have any chance of entering the Kingdom of God. In Protestantism, you can do whatever you want, but as long as you "believe", you will be saved, is a false gospel and a damnable, novel teaching created in the 1600s.

      Cannot part of that Will be accepting that Jesus is the only way to salvation, and that it is not by OUR good works will bring us closer or farther to the kingdom of Heaven, but only through our faith in His (Jesus’s) good work? Because I guess from my perspective if I am required to perform something to save myself, then I do play a part in my salvation. So who saved me? Me + Jesus, which is not just Jesus. I did my part, and he did his part, but both parts were required. We share credit in getting me to heaven.
      This versus Him taking all the credit, He has paid the debt, I realize I am a sinner deserving of hell in need of rescue, I put my faith in His power at the cross that I do not deserve, then out of completely overwhelming love and gratitude towards Him and what He’s done I do good works which are never out of fear that if I refuse (which I wouldn’t, hypothetically, if I want to love and serve Jesus well!) to do them I’ll go to hell.
      What do you think of this? I feel like our ideas on it are very close, but not exactly the same.

      @@nervousdorito3696 you must cooperate with God's grace to be saved. If you sin after being born again, you must repent, and if you don't repent of very major sins, your salvation is lost. You cannot keep sinning and expect to enter the kingdom of God.

      @nervousdorito3696 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@David-we3sb We will sin for the rest of our lives because we are sinners, it is inevitable. All sin is deadly and hurts God, but by the power of the Holy Spirit we will also continue to be sanctified; recognizing our sin, being convicted of it, and rejecting it as we come to better know God and His Will. I think this language of cooperate is difficult because if I CO-OPERATE with anyone, including God, we are operating together as distinct entities and thus I get part credit- this versus me accepting and putting my faith in Jesus and realizing that in my sinful nature I can’t do anything on my own, but am in desperate need of the Holy Spirit to purify my desires and point them towards God.
      It’s not an attitude, though, of, ‘Well if God doesn’t want to me do this, he’ll make me stop.’ We ARE able to know God’s feelings towards sin, and if we love God and have the Holy Spirit working in us we will begin to see our sin, hate it, and resist it; thus His desires overtaking and replacing our desires, not by my power but His own.
      Another question if I could ask, does Catholicism believe that any and all sin is deserving of hell, or certain kinds (for believers)? I think someone told me one time, but I don’t think I fully understood.
      If I could add another example too. I would say when I accepted Jesus, my sin became ‘worse’ before it got better- but God was using that to reveal to me how depraved I really was. Was I going to hell at that point in time, or did God know I was going to commit those further sins and cover that sin on the cross knowing that I was His child in the midst of being sanctified (as I still am being sanctified), and in his radical love did not abandon or forsake me, but continued to work in me?
      Because I guess again from my perspective, if I had been separated from God at that point, I would not have had any further conviction towards my sin, but I did because He was in me working.
      No fear of hell ever motivated me away from sin, because I didn’t believe I could be separated from Him, but a complete awestruck gratitude towards my Creator for saving me, not because of what I would or could or would not do for Him, but out of love for me. If He did that for me, how could I keep sinning against Him? Additionally I wish to do good works now, not because if I don’t I’m guilty of sinning against Him, but because I can bring more glory to the God who saved me when He didn’t have to.
      What do you think about that, or what do you think the Catholic position would probably be?

    Baptism concept is purification that also linked to the jewish purification ceremony of engagement between bridegroom and the bride, after the ceremony they wear white dress as symbol of holiness that is also linked to the wedding garment mentioned in matthew 22. Also Jesus’s last message was to make disciples and baptize people in the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
    A lot of progress Christianity keeps circumcising Jesus’ teachings.

      You could also say whoever believes AND sins will be saved. Because you BELIEVE, you will be saved no matter what follows.
      Was the thief on the cross baptized with water? No.
      Baptism also refers to being baptized by the Holy Spirit.
      Lastly, the ending of Mark is not in the earliest manuscripts.
      Should you get baptized? Yes. When I was saved I had an overwhelming urge and desire to be baptized and do good works but I know I was saved before water baptism.
      Thinking you need anything else to be saved other than faith in Jesus is saying you don’t believe Jesus is enough.

      I don't think we should ignore Jesus's words. We should believe Him and not do mental gymnastics to say "baptism" doesn't REALLY mean "baptism".

    We’re not gonna talk about Calvinism? I almost left the faith based on Calvinism. It’s so false. Yes, there are some scripture that seems like it could support it, but it doesn’t. I believe that’s more important than talking about Catholics in this video.
    For example though, in the beginning he asked the guy “how do you get to heaven” (roughly), and the guy said “through Jesus alone, putting faith in what He did”. That’s a contradiction, if God chose you, it doesn’t matter if you put faith in Him or not, He chose you right? I just believe the Calvinism view takes out free will. It hurts my brain to even think about it. I dug deep on it a few months ago and found myself in a hole. Jesus pulled me out of that hole
