***Thanks so much for all the comments regarding the new bike - good and bad. It kind of reminded me of the Ford vs Chevy competition. I’m not knocking the Goldwing in any way - was a great bike.
Understandable so many are attached to their particular type of bike - makes me glad that there are so many options to choose from rather than just 1 or 2 that can leave you feeling trapped. And while we might have our own personal preferences on motorcycle brands, it nice to know that at the core of everything we all share the same love and passion - riding motorcycles. As Rich likes to say “as long as your knees are in the breeze that’s all that matters”.
While the Goldwing might be a great fit for many, it was not a good fit for me and my riding style. We ride the highways occasionally, don’t cover a ton of miles a day and absolutely love peeling off onto a dirt/gravel/rutted road on a whim. I would have been terrified of taking the GW off road and don’t like being confined to just always having to ride the pavement.
So, if I had gotten the GW, I would have still gone down unreliable roads and not enjoyed it at all, which was the main reason I couldn’t go with the GW. I probably wouldn’t have done a good job of it, fallen down and left bike parts in my wake.
So, no matter what you ride, or how passionate you are about a particular brand of bike, Rich & I wish you happy riding and a fabulous summer of endless, safe travels.
NAME SUGGESTIONS: Thanks so much for all your input on naming the new bike! We really appreciate each and every one of you!!! We’re in the process of picking the best 3 and will be putting that out on our Facebook page for everyone to vote soon.
    Rich & Chris

I have seen the roads you go on and I am impressed by the both of you. Enjoy your new ride. As for a name I never really named my two bikes I have owned. I am sure you will pick an appropriate one. Stay safe and have fun.👍😊

I bought my K1600B at that very GoAZ and had all my service there on my prior bike (a 1997 Honda Shadow 1100ACE). They've always been great to work with, in my opinion. I was seriously considering the GS. That's a great bike and I think you will enjoy it. I love my bagger, but sometimes wish that I had some gravel road ability - especially living here in AZ. Hope you are otherwise enjoying your stay here in Arizona. With the exception of some unusual wind, the weather has been great for riding!

A couple of days ago driving home from work the engine top up light came on on my K1300S, one mile from home..
At my home I inspected the oil level, which as you know is on a plastic hose external to the upper oil tank. I tried to get the seat off and it just would not move! The seat on these bikes are notoriously difficult to remove, I have always had problems with mine since I bought the bike. Called the emergency call out service, the mechanical technician could not get the seat off and recommend the bike should be recovered to a BMW dealership, it was.
I took out an extended warranty last year from BMW for the bike, the seat mechanism is not covered 😲😲!!
I paid £397.85 for this warranty piece of mind that's $562.36, this part is not covered. WTF.
I will contact BMW in the morning, if no result no more BMW bikes for me.

Nhaa, there are many other Japanese bikes out there that are not as big and very comfortable that are also Japanese. It’s hard to beat the Japanese reliability. The top four most reliable motorcycle manufactures based on two different owner surveys done years apart, are all Japanese. BMW was almost in last place, only beaten by CanAm. If CanAm went out of business or didn’t exist, BMW would be least reliable brand of bikes.

Have GL1500 Wing along with Ultra Classic HD and several others, but the Wing is by far the most dependable w/no break downs other than batteries (can happen any bike) and normal maintenance with lots of it's 82k miles towing Aspen Classic tent trailer (similar to Rich & Chris) riding double. Seen many older wings & later model Wings go well over 200k & way beyond. Hard to beat Honda longevity.

Sorry to see the bike die. I’ve owned a K75 and now have an old K1100LT. Both had the final drive wheel bearing fail at less than 50k miles! It’s a weakness of the mono shock system and the strain on the bearing. The trick is to spot the first drop of oil on your back wheel rim as the seal starts to fail and get it changed out immediately. I also check my bearing regularly now by grabbing the wheel top and bottom and try waggling it. Good luck with the new bike. I still love BMW.

I hear people rag on chain drive systems but changing out sprockets and chains is no big deal. Once you wear out a shaft drive system you're done. Sure, maintenance is higher on chain's but it's easy and fast and a chain and sprockets will last a long time if you do it correctly. I got 45,000 miles out of the original chain and sprockets on my Honda Shadow Wing. I'm old and disabled so I needed a light touring bike that no one has sold since the GL500 Silverwing of the early 80's so I built one. I purchased a Honda VT600CD motorcycle and fabricated custom brackets for it and mounted a 1970's era Windjammer fairing on it along matching bags and trunk. The bike is a "Cruiser" so the seat is very low so I can get my old leg over it. I've put many problem free miles on it and a expect it's my last motorcycle before it get too old to continue riding.

My question too, and I had a Goldwing that was absolutely... flawless. Met a guy in Canada once who was pulling a trailer behind his, asked, How's it handle it?" "I started pulling it at 100,000 miles, and have had not problems" He showed me the odometer, 480,000 miles. Honda means "bullet proof" in Japanese.

@@TwoWheelsBigLife You made the right decision! The new GW needs a $3000+ suspension upgrade to ride like it should, on or off road. Its a common problem, but few want to admit it. Also, it is just to heavy and not made to ride off road like the GS is made to. The GS has more suspension travel, its lighter, and should last as long as any other bike.

I've had no big issues but the previous owner didn't ride for years and that killed the ABS. My '07 K1200GT came to me last year with 3990 miles and now has 5000 more on. It doesn't like being left out in the wet. A trip around Scotland had the cruise stop responding and the heated seats had a life of their own which is awful when the sun comes out again! It was ok when it dried out but I do think I would like something a little more hardy. I've had many bikes that ran well in all conditions but there is just too much weight and tech on this for it to be a keeper.

I agree about the Goldwings. I bought my first one in 1975. One of the first to touch US pavement. I have had half dozen since then and have 3 now. Another restored 75, and 2 identical 98’s except one is triked out and the other had the landing gear setup. At 74 next month, I’m doing what I need to to keep riding. Just took a 300 mi ride heading down to the coast from San Antonio and back. Blowing out the trike getting it ready for a trip to UTAH by July. They been parked too long while I was out of the country for a year. I do think your choice was a good one for your off pavement riding. I don’t mind taking the Gl1000 off pavement, but the 1500’s are a different story. Keep the shiney side up and have fun.
