  • Last year there was a lot of confusion after Miyoko Schinner's unexpected departure from the company she founded. To this day there are still lingering questions, and I was lucky enough to get the chance to ask Miyoko some of them. We talked about her entrepreneurial ventures over the years, what it was like launching the massively successful Miyoko's, challenges she faced as CEO, injustice in the food system, and so much more.

    What an amazing interview! Miyoko's philosophy is so dead on the money. We should all strive to support the small local vegan businesses as much as possible. I always look for new vegan products to try, and then check out their websites to find out what products they have and where they can be purchased. What I have found is that there are many small artisanal vegan businesses out there with owners that have the same outlook and approach as Miyoko. If you're a passionate vegan then please, please try to support them. The large food corporations do not have our best interests in mind...it's all about profits.

      I couldn't put it better myself, John!!I sometimes wish health food stores and even Whole Foods would label which products are "small businesses/family owned" or "local." Oftentimes these products are there but mixed in with the massively owned companies (i.e. Upton's and Treeline are two vegan companies with wide distribution but still owned by the founders; I have to think people would be more inclined to pick these over other brands if they knew that).

      What's really sad these days I see is a lot of '' small '' vegan business are forced to close down, because they almost have more to lose than they gain, which is nerve wrecking. This is happening in France and around the UK, Ireland & Australia. It's very sad to witness, what is even more sad is that the big companies STILL refuse to implement themselves in places where people would benefit it the most, in the countryside / rural places where people eat the most animal based products. I wish that small business was a thing here but it's not, people cannot support things that do not exist and that's sad 😢 On another note, Danone has closed down one of their biggest factory and made it all plant-based, for the Beverage , as we are not allowed to say milk anymore 😂

      @MysteriousBeingOfLight That's really interesting (and encouraging) to hear about Danone! And "the Beverage" is hilarious 😆🙃

    I think children naturally feel compassion for animals because they're also innocent and vulnerable beings. Kids relate really easily to them. It's human adults who indoctrinate them to reject this compassion so that children will go along with the illogical mainstream beliefs and behaviours exploiting and killing specific animals.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Exactly!! I specifically remember asking my parents if animals feel pain when they're killed and them saying "no." Kids are most likely to make the connection; unfortunately it's up to the adults in their lives to foster and encourage it.

    • @garden.of.thistles
      @garden.of.thistles หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had to be convinced as a child that I would die without eating animals, and that animals wanted to be eaten in order for me to continue eating them. Thankfully as a teenager I finally learned those things aren't true and was able to go vegetarian and then vegan

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @garden.of.thistles Yes we are blatantly lied to as children. I can't blame the adults because they were lied to (and continue to lie to themselves) as well.

    Wonderful interview, Miyoko shines out as still being that same ethical woman she always was, for the animals. She walks her talk. Really enjoyed her views about changing the way that business is done, people first not money first. Local, diverse vegan products in small businesses would add so much flavour to our lives. Because we all saw what happened to her, we can see exactly why she's so right about this. Nice one, great topic.

    What a scoop, Marielle! I really enjoyed this conversation; you are very good at interviewing people, doing your homework, using good open-ended questions, listening carefully, and pacing the query and response dynamic smoothly. As a trained culinarian, I really enjoyed hearing about Miyoko's processs of recipe development and her deeper food innovation history; she's such a maverick! And I think it's important for someone of her status to be talking about food justice, which is triggering for so many vegans who deny the intersectionality of justice movements. Thanks so much for posting🙂

      Thank you Tamara! I really appreciate your kind words about my interviewing because it is truly difficult to balance, all while trying not to slurp my water too much (LOL 🙃). And yes Miyoko certainly is a maverick; it's crazy because most people know her for cheese but she's an expert in just about every type of vegan cooking! And yes she is doing such fascinating and important work which, as she said, may have never happened had things gone "smoothly" with Miyoko's.

    I love this dream too (won't spoil for people still watching). As if I needed more reasons to want to return to Italy. Such a beautiful country! However, their right-wing government has been actively trying to block vegan products. I hope this doesn't cause issues.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ahh, I feel like I have heard about the blocking of vegan products in Italy but don't know much about it. From what I recall they want to keep things more "natural/minimally processed." Which is obviously frustrating bc vegan cheese is no more processed than animal cheese!
