I’d love to learn this! I had one of my conures get injured flying into a window and he wasn’t eating on his own at first and I ended up paying several thousand dollars to keep him at the vet until he was better but after the first few days the only thing they where doing was crop feeding & they refused to teach me. I know a lot can go wrong but I wish they would’ve tried to help me learn rather than keep him 3 weeks just to crop feed him.

Couldn't you use it without the soft red tube? Like the baby can still feed off of the syringe itself and they can swallow it on their own without the tube being shoved down to the crop?
Good question. I suppose the red tube is used since the edge of the syringe might be sharp and could scratch its crop. Another reason is the ending might be too short, thick or large. So its needed. The baby bird is feeding healthily and by its feathers, seems to be a healthy bird. The red tube also isnt entirely solid and is flexible as the esophagus isnt straight and having a straight tube may make it harder to feed.
The tube is to avoid aspiration which can kill a baby chick within minutes. You can still feed without the tube but it takes experience and skills to not pump formula into the chicks lung.
So you gotta change the length of the nozzle depending on the baby size right, so that it reaches the crop and is not too long? How do you make sure? And then slowly put just enough food to fill the crop, but nothing more? And I guess clean the syringe between feedings? Do you feed several baby bird species? :) I am asking because I have rehabilitated chicks before but never one that needs syringe feeding, so I want to learn in case I ever have to
You dont have to press it all the way , when i used to feed my bird i try to go deep slowly until the bird adjust himself to the length it feels comfortable
We have several sizes of syringes that go according to size of the soft tube (lenght and width). We have to choose to right one depending on the species and their age. The tip of the tube has to get in the crop so that the formula is poured to the crop. Syringe must be cleaned after each use. Otherwise you'll get bacteria; but this applies to any tool touching food (especially wet food). When feeding, the crop has to end up full but not overstuffed. Tube aspiration occurs when: 1) the tube has not reached the crop and the formula is supplied halfway, 2) too much formula is given, does not fit in the crop, begins to rise up the pharynx and when it reaches the junction of the larynx and pharynx it passes into the lungs.
Crop feeding is the safest method to hand feed. It needs to be done by experienced people. Feeding formula at the mouth increases a lot the possibility of aspiration.
There are some parrots that may have difficulty accepting dietary changes. Parrots are animals of habits and generally reject novelties (survival). This is not good method, it's might get injured or harmful, so it is better to leave the feed at the top of tongue.
