EXHAUST POP how to - super simple guide for POPS and BANGS

  • After publishing a video every Sunday for 30+ this Sunday I decided to do something super simple and take it easy for a day or two. So I retarded my ignition a bit and squeezed a few pops from my exhaust and decided to explain a bit of the theory of making pops and bangs / exhaust popcorn/ pop and crackle, or whatever else people call it. It's a super simple and straightforward guide that will get your exhaust popping in no time :)
A few additional notes when it comes to exhaust pops and carburetors:
In my case the Nodiz doesn't allow negative ignition advance values (below zero), and in many cases you want negative values for bigger and louder pops and bangs from the exhaust. This is part of the reason why the pops you can hear in the intro to the video are pretty mild.
Also for louder pops and bags with carbs you will often want pilot jets that are a bit larger than is recommended for good idle air fuel ratios, this means that your mpg may be suffering in the interest of pops and bangs. This is the other part of the reason for my mild pops and bangs as I didn't touch any of the jets on the carbs to get the little pops.
For maximum pops and bangs you also want the engine as warm as possible, the pops and bangs will often be loudest during hard driving when the exhaust manifold gets very very hot. Cast iron manifolds usually produce inferior pops and bangs compared to welded steel manifolds.
Thanks for watching and much love to you all!
A special thank you to my patrons:

Thanks for once again making something that educates and entertains!

Well, for my carbed moped with de-waffle-ed muffler, warming up the engine and the exhaust, revving to the top, holding gas fully on, and switching ignition on-n-off made it pop n bang and shoot flame, because, of combustion igniting on hot exhaust pipe.
Switching ignition helped fill exhaust with unburned air fuel ratio, then it all to combusted with the heat of combusted hot exhaust gas. Simple. Ohh, and btw, yours is carb'd

So for anyone watching videos like this and thinking they should do this to their cars, you should really understand why anti-lag is a thing and why you REALLY don't want to be exploding fuel outside the combustion chamber. Its done as a NECESSITY and not for fashion and "cause it sounds cool". If you like your exhaust sounding poppy and crackly I hope you like the sound of your money being dropped down a hole too because you'll be replacing parts a lot more often. :)

Your 0 degree spark is still occurring way before the exhaust valve opens, not after it has opened as you suggest. Ignition must still be happening in the cylinder but continuing as the exhaust valve starts to open. A rich or weak mixture may also be slowing down the combustion process.

I really appreciate the informative video. I only learned very recently that people love those sounds and in truth they always made me a bit nervous perhaps because I once read of fuel igniting in the exhaust and blowing something apart, maybe the manifold. It was a long time ago but an undesirable and quite unforgettable outcome nevertheless. On top of that, using fuel without getting propulsion is an uncomfortable idea since it represents money that could go to gaskets or paint. I'm a practical man, which is why I only replaced my steering wheel twice.

But yea it also damages the turbine side of the turbo and shorten the lifespan of the turbocharger. Rally cars will run some sort of anti lag to keep the turbo in boost but at the cost of the shorter lifespan of the turbo but irrelevent since they will rebuild the engine after finishing a whole stage.

To gorivo nezapaljeno nece stajati u auspuhu i čekati sljedeću iskru.

in a standalone ecu the fuel map does not control decel cut, look for a decel cut or overrun setting.

    • @clintonrossouw4240
      @clintonrossouw4240 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Some more primitive one's do, or less user friendly to beginner tuners etc. They will not offer decel tuning through a built in feature, but you can tune decel directly on the fuel map yourself.
Dicktator management is an example of a aftermarket aftermarket ecu that requires fuel map tuning for decel. Timing can be a bit tricky though.

I have a mixed relationship with exhaust pops, turbo futututu and other 'noises of performance'.
It sounds absolutely amazing in a group N rallye car drifting by, but in a otherwise stock 1.4l eco-box it sounds kinda embarrassing.

I can't say I don't agree, pops and bangs are also pointless on naturally aspirated engines. But I think it's a fun little experiment that also helps us understand engines and the combustion process a bit better.

Isn't retarding ignition to achieve pops by overlapping open exhaust valves with ignition very bad for exhaust valves. Having high flow of very hot oxidative gasses (partially burned mixture) eats away the valves and valve seats. I always thought the correct way in ECU controlled cars is to cut the spark and leave some fuel to be pushed into exhaust where it is ignited by hot exhaust or occasional spark event. In the carbureted cars it is different because at high RPM and closed throttle the engine creates a lot of vacuum and sucks too much fuel through the pilot jet nozzle which than burns in exhaust.

Keep in mind I'm referring to idiots that run a stock beater with bolt on pre-blued exhaust and pod filter next to their firewalls that couldn't outrun a prius on a good day. But I may also make an exception for the 15 year old base model mustangs that claims they can take on the world.
