Up from the ashes one of those jewels... Such an under rated record. Billy has so many incredible performances. Great songs and blistering solos. I still listen and get goosebumps. The solo on Stay is still one of my all time favorites.
So cool to get an interview with Billy White. My introduction to him was on Up From The Ashes. That album is a masterpiece and I wish to god there could have been another record with that lineup.
.....Up from the Ashes will always be my favorite!! My favorite song is “Stay”! Love, love, that video too!! I will always love Dokken with Billy White!! The best!! Always!! xo ❤❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Up from the ashes was a great melodic rock album with excellent guitar work, what a great band. Billy is an under rated guitar player, he is phenominal
Went to high school with Jason and Billy. They played in our cafeteria. We could see them every few weeks at the ritz on 6th st. I was known as Wretch! Ah the good old 80's! 4 or 5 shows every week. Punk and metal. Everyone knew that Billy was more than just a metal guitarist! He was truly gifted! Very soft spoken and very humble. Jason was just an all around good guy. Always trying to promote the band. I remember they plyed at lake house and we destroyed the inside ohf the house!
Billy and I saw a crazy movie at Dobie Theatre call TOXIC AVENGER. Crazy and we laughed thru it all. He turned me on to Godzilla and Mothra and his toy collection when his bedroom was in his parents garage. Great Guitarist.
I saw Don's supergroup band open up for Poison Jan/91 in Winnipeg and Dokken (the band) owned that stage that night. Up From The Ashes is such a killer record and Billy was a huge part of it obviously. So great that you have a personal history with Billy. Great stories ...Great chat
I wish there was a tab book with all the amazing guitarwork from up from the ashes. The musicianship was incredible ,it should be taught to music schools...
I remember the Watchtower shows in San Antonio back in the day. One of the most impressive bands around. All the musicians from all the other bands would be there checking you out. That's respect.
This one is just so incredibly special. I remember Billy talking about a project before the Don D. thing he was considering the name Chimera I think? JJ Johnson was the original drummer in Blind Date. Those were some big shoes I had to "try" and fill. I was even just a little bit younger kid than you guys, and lucky enough to go to a couple Tower rehearsals. First time I ever saw musicians (especially a metal band) writing notation as they were writing rehearsal. The shows, the memories, the nostalgia. My heroes, my friends. Having lived through and around some of these stories in some small way, you guys were an inspiration for me as an 18 year old kid. For those who know, know how truly unique and surreal it is and was. What an honor and a privilege to have witnessed. My absolute favorite episode. Congrats, and thank you brothers. -Deej
@@ModernMountainLiving Tim! Hey dude! Man, I can't even think of how many years it's been amigo. Thank you for the kind words. Ahh, the Onyx and early Toys days. Such fun times. I hope life has been good. So, cool to hear from you.
Awesome interview. I feel like this answers so many unanswered questions about a real legend. Very cool that Billy found his place in the world. I hope you can get Doug on to do the same because there's no info about what he's up to!
Id sat Billy influenced me to push my guitar playing. I remember my best friend pulled out two tapes in his white honda accord on the steeets of Austin back in the 90's. Jeff Buckley and The Billy Write Trio.
Thanks for making this interview! Billy White is such a great musician. His guitar playing is amazing! It would be really cool to hear some of those guitar tapes that are mentioned at about one hour into the interview.
Every one out there needs to understand that Austin's very own "Watchtower " were way ahead of their time and Austin should be very extremely proud of our 1st progressive metal band that came from here; then it progressed into the mighty "Dangerous Toys", so, Austin, stand and be proud" of your own badass Metal music history!
Hey guys PerryP.here.interestly enough,Jason at times during this interview look 20-25 yrs younger.as in the kinda greyish hair disappears...GREAT JOB AGAIN ,!
I would love to get him together with Paul Masvidal of Cynic. They have a lot in common both musically and spiritually -- i would totally be into hearing what they would talk about.
I’m a big fan and also opened up a show for Watchtower here in Houston Tx. At The high Chaparral club . Long time ago… a band named RELAYER! Also I’ve been trying to get Watchtowers first Vinyl for a long time. Can anyone recommend any help? Good stuff .
I don't know, Jason asks Billy awkward questions about when they were doing stuff in their youth, maybe Billy doesn't want to remember them, and Jason insists that he has to remember them with exact dates.
What a MONSTER player!!! Its sad that majority of guitar player fan boys worship someone like Kirk Hammett, who to me is an awful player! Especially live! Its horrible! Billy is the perfect example of true talent!
Metallica are a garage band of mediocre to poor musicians who got big because non musicians who don’t have an ear for quality musicianship bought their albums . Their hardcore fans were just stoners who spent their life wearing black jeans , shoes and t shirts but didn’t have a clue about music . At the end of the day you could say well good on Metallica , they made it big and are rolling in cash but I hear what your saying , it’s hard to watch that happen while quality musicians struggle away .
@@deanwitt7903 With due respect, I think you’re oversimplifying the individual and collective talents and tenacity of Metallica. Yes, they’re a band of garage urchins who never dreamed of their historical success, but they work hard at their craft and beat all odds with their brand of music. They definitely didn’t follow any recipe for success and I’d argue that James and Cliff are/were very creative and talented musicians and songwriters. Lars played a crucial role in their sound and was an absolute pit bull when it came to legwork and self-promotion. Kirk kept the band moving when Mustaine was dismissed. Nothing but respect from me. There will always be talented bands that didn’t “make it.” That’s the nature of the biz. Watchtower was one of those bands. Appreciate your thoughts and always enjoy a healthy discussion. Thanks for checking us out. - Dave
Great to here from a guy that's pretty hard to find any info on, but Jason... man, you could really work on your interview skills. You're a great singer I get you have a history with Billy and that sometimes the interviewee needs to be nudged along, but it was fairly frustrating listening to a 2 hour interview that could've been cut down by about 45 minutes without the interruptions and fluff that only you and Billy care about.
We're more than happy to have female guests. And, for the record, we've had Brijitte West, Ruyter Suys and Guernica Mancini on the show. We've pursued others, but haven't been able to line up schedules (yet).
Billy kicks George's ass. Crash N Burn is one of the greatest metal guitar solos in existance. Up From The Ashes is as good or better than anything in classic Dokken's catalog. Nirvana sucks ballsack. Grunge sucks ballsack. The end.

Billy seems very genuine, great interview Jason!
I still get the same rush listening to energetic today as back in mid 80s. It was the best
