It's difficult for those who do not know how to imitate sound. I was often assessed as having great or perfect French pronounciation (on my DELF exam I got the highest marking on the spoken test, after the reading one), but I don't know how to express myself, or write - yet; on those my marks were much lower. It is just an inborn ability to hear & reproduce certain sounds. French is a very musical language too. They can just speak and it sounds like they're singing.
I took French in high school back in the late 70s, and my French teacher was amazing. She explained that to properly pronounce the “r” is to pretend you are gargling but with no water, but to make the sound very softly and subtly, and not the harsh sound, same as what you were explaining in this video. That helped me tremendously and afterwards I had the pronunciation down pat.
Basically the french R (uvular fricative) is like gargling but with a dry throat. If your uvula is too wet and vibrates to much then it may turn into the german R instead (uvular trill).
@@storytellingsnek5255 i think they mean like they have to try to not feel embarrassed? bc you’re having to make new sounds and you make a lot of mistakes so it feels embarrassing even though it’s just apart of the process.
Sneaky sneaky French. The reason your "H" is silent is because the "R" stole it's voice! Thanks, this helped as I was over-pronouncing my "R" and it sounded harsher than I liked.
Oh my sweet Jesus. I was trying to make the sound of my tongue touching the back of bottom teeth and my Ragdoll cat came in the room slowly, ready to pounce on what she thought must have been a dying animal.

(The reason why I chose to spanish and portuguese before coming back to learning French again). Now I feel a lot more confident about my french pronunciation!! Well The French R sound is very common in European Portuguese. The Portugeuse "initial R" and "RR" are pronounced like the French R. Example: ronaldo, torre But most people in the north pronounce them like the Spanish R and RR (respectively). In Brazilian Portuguese, they sound exactly like English H.
OH MY GOD!!! I have studied French for over 10 years, have DELF B2, graduated from language school and French economics in University and FOR THE FIRST time in ny life were able to do a proper "r"!!! Thank you so much!!!
This is the most difficult letter for me to pronounce because in spanish we do like totally different, in spanish your tongue drums on the ceiling of your mouth and this you gotta put it down and do the sound with the back of your throat. My wife speaks french and she said it is almost like a gargle.
whenever i practice my french i always have to have some water beside me because R dries and tires my throat. But I think I'm getting a bit better after watching this vid by associating R with H.

the whole tongue and mouth placement thing is the BEST way to explain! I learned devanagari sanskrit pronunciation this way and it's very accurate for everyone!
My first language is English, but I know Spanish because my mother and father’s first language is Spanish. I heard French is easy to pick up if you know Spanish, so I tried. I mean, it’s not the hardest, but it’s not the easiest either. I can write okay, I guess, but pronunciation is a WHOLE other ball park. This so helpful, thanks!
Another approach to pronouncing the sound R is to begin with the sound G, which is made by raising the tongue to the roof of the mouth and then building up air pressing blocked by the tongue and finally pulling the tongue down releasing the built-up air. Similar to what you said, then don’t block the ai flow entirely but leave a narrow space between the tongue and the roof of your mouth. That is the R sound. Practice with French words that begin with G followed by R: gros, grand, gras, etc.
This isn't the problem I end up having. My problem is that the French "r" is actually multiple sounds in different environments, but while I can do a light uvular fricative at the start of a syllable, if it's final and requires me to move to a consonant, it gets hard: "parler" is a surprisingly difficult word in French, and has an awkward hiatus between the syllables.
Hi! You know what? I'm learning English, and it's truly great to know that I can understand what you're saying and, at the same time, I'm catching up the skill of another language! The trilled R on the tip of the tongue is more prevalent in European, East Asian and South Asian languages. The guttural R as a gh/h sound at the back of the throat shows up in West Asian and some European languages like French and German. If you grew up speaking American English with a mid-tongue R, it's really hard to get both Spanish and French R sounds correct. I think Arabic is one of the few languages that has both trilled R and R/Gh sounds.
I began my french studies at 6 years old. And it was a bit dificult, because spanish is my native language, and you know, our R pronunciation is so different than the french R. It's so easy for Arabs , 'cause we have a letter "غ" and pronounced it like"r" in french
Oh wow thank you so much! It also kind of sounds like the Spanish J when you’re saying Ravi. This is amazing!!!!!
Shouldn't be doing this in the middle of the night... again.
