Dibakar Banerjee had to be on this panel . Nobody , I mean nobody else can document the struggle of independent filmmaking quite like him for the past 20 years
I'm so glad we have someone like Rana who uses the industry know-how and connections and knowledge he has to further Indian cinema. I hope more people with the background he has choose to use the resources they have for the Indian cinema industry instead of... well... whatever they're doing.
Movies mentioned : All we imagine as light Baahubali All that breathes Disciple Village Rockstars 2 Udaan Court Masaan Newton Jigra Kill Laapata Ladies 12th Fail A night of knowing nothing Bommalata Dum Maaro Dum Toras husband Village rockstars Bulbull can sing An insignificant man While we watched Roma Malti my love Pedro Manjummel boys Brahamayugam
Rima Das is so graceful, simple and honest. They way she cares about other indie filmmakers and the struggles they go through. Also a special mention for Payal, even after being into media for so long consistently she is still seems to be so grounded and real. Loved this conversation. Cinema in Hindi is indeed in a crisis but times will change, they all the beacon of hope. Next Kashyaps and Bharadwajs. ❤
I love how tonally different the conversation was when you mix Chaitanya. Everybody is a bit sad and "cautiously optimistic" but whenever it's Chaitanya's turn he will be like "yo bro this sucks". He should direct a comedy next. 😂
Chaitanya points of being most of the indie movies to be boring is so true. While we agree indie movies are bit different from the movies that we generally celebrate, we also need to see that Film should not be boring, as simple as it sounds. And those large number of bad indie movies certainly kill the possibility of good movies to thrive. So, its our responsibility to bring up those very few good indie movies and speak for them.
Satyajit Ray found a way to make movies while working a full time job, with no formal cinema education, and at a time when India was dirt poor. Talent finds a way.
The way Shaunak speaks shows that he's so well read. Dropping all those metaphors cannot come so easily to a layperson. (Secretly hoping he writes a book someday). All these creators need more praise and viewership from India. Their talent is phenomenal.
I immediately watch any interview that has Rana in it. He always has a different and fresh perspective and has a solution oriented mindset. Also, this one being a Round Table that too by Anupama Chopra, cannot miss it.. loved it
What Vikram sir said about 2 percent rule and basically as viewer where to watch the film, I remember I had travelled 200km and stayed for a day at friends place to watch MASAN. Because it didn't get release where I was staying at that time.
I agree with Rana - that we don't have movie theater which screens only independent movies (local/English/foreign). I found that in Washington DC - AFI, Landmark E Street, Bethesda Row, or Avalon theater. I used to look forward to this period from October until Oscars used to be the period when beautiful independent movies used to get released and some of them used to get nominated. I don't find even a single theater in Delhi that exclusively screens independent movies, and even in multiplexes with multiple screens, they hardly screen any independent movies. If this is the sordid state of Delhi, then I wonder how it would be at non-metropolises. It becomes challenging to find independent movies that wins Oscars as well. I'm glad that "All We Imagine As Light" is going to have a theatrical release and I'll watch it for sure.
Yes totally agreed.... Earlier there was only movie entertainment in the weekend and tickets were reasonable .... Now for most movies, the cost just doesn't justify when you can be entertained by countless shows on OTT or Even insta reels!
For those who haven't watched the film, please do watch the film 'baakki vannavar' . The film is made from heart by a bunch of people with a very low budget. The film gives hope that good films can be made irrespective of anything. 🌷🙏
And what Chaitanya says at 34:40, is too real. Indie filmmakers are told its their unique voice which matters, but just like how theatres expect a certain template of a film, the film festivals have their own biases & template, outside of which your film gets rejected. It usually costs close to 1 lakh just to send to festivals throughout the year. That amount is too costly for an indie filmmaker. Streamers also demand known faces and straight up buying indie films are few & far in between. So filmmakers have a rough deal from all directions.
They need a sustainable platform. I think the problem is absence of spotlight on their works. There's audience for all kind of films in our country. 1) Big stars need to support their production. Ex- what PCJ, Aamir Khan, Alia, RD, Deepika, Farhan etc are doing with their production houses since many years. 2) Relationship b/w Big production houses & OTT platform needs an overhaul. The former need to restart the 'small film culture' and bring in new faces. Ex- Yrf is doing this since ages, Dharma& RSVP has stopped it, Siddharth Roy Kapur films tried it but failed. (Although, Dharma has shifted its focus on supporting independent artists in form of re-using their music, songs and even actors in their blockbusters. Ex- Rangi Sari etc) 3) Government need to make these films tax free or any % benefit and give them advertising platform on govt owned channels, funding for ads for oscar race etc. Create a separate award category in NF awards. 4) Advertising is the most imp aspect. Release the trailers tied to big blockbuster movies, endorse them using an A Lister ( Aamir is great at this!) 5) The oscar committee uncles need to go. They're only trying to select movies which fit into the closed bracket of the earlier nominated Indian movies. Which is incredibly flawed. (The lunchbox, All we imag as light would h've been easily nominated) 6) Make Desi film festivals MORE accessible to the public. (I h've no knowledge of how the business of films works 😅)
So educative ... Thanks for doing such roundtables & facilitating such conversations. I would also love to someday have a one on one with Shaunak ... Great confidence & articulation.
I loved watching village rockstars, Court and the disciple. Such a treat. Today i went and watched All we imagine as light in theatres and was so excited….. i found it boring, left the theatre feeling so confused because of all the reviews….. Chaitanya is absolutely right on how not all arthouse cinema is great. Nevertheless, congratulations to the team
Exactly. I am glad someone shares the same view. The film was THERE, the setting so well set and evoked but the culmination was so damn random and disappointing. If this was a documentary I’d be raving about it but sadly I was left unimpressed that the main characters chose to give up rather than fix their problems. Only Chhaya Kadam’s character felt fully realised, the other two felt too internal. Maybe just my personal problem with the film. And if I have to be crass and uneducated, this felt too French after the initial interpretation of Mumbai. For me, the film would have worked immensely if the other two returned to Mumbai and then chose their course of actions or not. But maybe that’s just me because Payal’s interpretation of Mumbai is emotional and fantastic.
the way a telugu movie independent movie "Pelli Choopulu" is been distributed tactically, eventually a 60L movie collected 25 CR + revenue, that's Rana and his father Suresh babu's strategy.,
The only smart guy in this interview was Chaitanya.🙌🏽🙌🏽 He answered all the questions truthfully based on facts. And popped Anupama's bubble that everything is okay for indie films 😂
Listening to all of the participants in this roundtable was super invigorating. I hope them coming together here got the juices flowing and they can continue to connect and work together to figure out how to build a support ecosystem. On the business and collective action side, I’ve been growing more excited to see what Rana can do- the appreciation for the art is already there, but based on his thoughts here and in his other interviews, he also seems to be trying to figure out ways to innovate to tackle some of the systemic challenges.
A delectable curation of questions and what a richly tale told by each of the panelist. Long line independent cinema. There's hope and light- the two important elements for cinema.
That so called Western system really works here(Ireland). Really close knit and supportive structured system with multiple groups and a encouring government for the creative arts industry.
I think when you’re trying to analyse independent films, bracketing Malayalam films in general as independent films does not help analyse how independent films can be done right. I say this because most of the films that people are referring to here are actually movies made for commercial releases, it’s just that the the budget is so much lesser than what the rest of the country is used to so it’s being put in the independent bracket. I also say this because the actual independent Malayalam movie circuit faces the same issues as discussed here and don’t get much reach in our own state.
53:00 This is the main point and issue of the independent films. At the end of the day, everything is market ( if you want your film to be seen by more people as an artist). These bad independent film experiences are killing the whole thing and that negative word of mouth about these films being shown at the festivals is contributing in a great way for the other good, indeed great independent films not coming into the limelight.
Great, would have been nice to hear from Vinod as well about his experiences with ‘Kottukkaali’ in theatres. I’m sure he would have brought some points to the table. Also I would have loved to see a South Indian filmmaker in this discussion..

To add to the point Rana made about SoBo audiences who will pay to watch an art film: indians abroad would also loveee to pay to watch these movies in a theater, me included.
Rana's strateggy is really a great Rescue for this kind of movies and situation, they are coming from decades of legacy Rana Naidu, his father and his grand father's Legacy
Independent Cinema is to be watched independently, don't cry for mass appeal and don't cry on commercial cinemas..., you want to heard your voice, make a documentary and nowadays ott platforms are the right choice, make a feelgood movie and don't cry commercially not seen by mass audiences., I Respect both sides of the movies

Ok ,i give you an example of single screen situation,I come from up west district shamli it's only 100 km away from Delhi ,till 2012 there used to be 3 single screen theatres and they were packed always, now all are turned into warehouses , except one which screened film once in month ,so this is disappointing news but also scope out there to renew ,
It was very interesting to listen to all. Such discerning minds. What if a new OTT exclusively for Indian independent cinema is created? Telugu, Malayalam, Odiya, Bengali, Tamil, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi - all kinds of independent films put up there. Quality check with some deciphering minds to select good independent cinema and not the bad ones (As Tamhane said, some are real bores) . Some names such as Rana, Vikramaditya, Payal, Chaitnya and others promote it. Good quality cinema even if less in number is exhibited there. Tie up with Amazon etc for subscriptions. As a step towards creating eco-system, finding connecting threads as Rana says. Also theatres for independent cinema, documentaries as part of the process. And film appreciations courses across cities for general public so that a new taste can be developed and audiences can be made excited about it. A recommendation on designing thumbnails. If you had to place Payal at the end of the stripe pattern, her image should have been facing inside. Not outside. The eye totally misses her because the ends are darker than the middle. God lies in graphic design details.
