Sometimes the most dramatic thing that can happen in an opera is that everyone just stands still, and sings their inner-most thoughts. AND, it can only happen in opera.
I like how the orchestration starts off very simple (pizzicato strings with sparse yet melodic woodwind accompaniment), then the musical texture gradually becomes denser and more animated as singers are added until we have all four voices, bowed upper strings, pizzicato lower strings, and still-lyrical woodwinds. Finally, in the last thirty seconds, the lower strings are bowed, creating a completely homogeneous, legato sound. Beethoven is great. :)
Sublime performances by all. This act of Fidelio is so problematic, but these performers make it divine. With typical movement and action (which directors seem compelled to require) the staging distracts from the intensity of emotions. But by keeping the singers frozen in place, the scene makes so clear that this is about the emotions and thoughts that each character is trying to control or hide. So the quartet is about the truth. Each singer/ actor rises to the occasion by revealing a passionate maelstrom of buried emotions, dreams, wishes for love in their singing and on their face. The tension and intensity created by this staging and these actors elevates the scene and the music. Gundula and Lucia always are divine together. I don't think there will another recording that matches this quartet.
aymeric Patricot because mother Mary had the hot for the archangel Michael, however Michael didn’t feel the same way, by using unholy dark rituals Mary gave birth to a secret baby half Angel and half human the Antichrist. The baby was meant to be sealed for eternity since its awake meant the utter destruction of gods creation, namely humanity. However the baby was summoned and freed by Lucifer and his four horsemen, terrorising the earth c137 ever since the new age 103, leaving nothing but an echo behind “he who hesitates disintegrates”
This quartet is a hypnotic and magical thing. The utterances from the Jaquino are so interesting as everyone floats in a stream around it. Then the way that it comes to an intense conclusion is dramatic. It is like God ordered a change. A stunning work.
Wow! in one quartet the great Leonard Bernstein, Gundula Janowitz, Manfred Jungwirth and in the shorter principal roles the great Lucia Popp and Adolf Dallapozza. Luxury grand opera casting in any era
Marzellina is blissfully in love with fidelio. She is happy. Fidelio is really a married woman so she is not happy. . Rocco thinks they will make a fine couple. Jacquino's hair stands on end: he is sure the father will consent and if he does he is stuffed. Just google translation mir ist so wunderbar or for the plot of the opera.

You are so right!
Lucia Popp: great talent, sorely missed . . .
Welche Musik! Was für Stimmen. Wie stets bei diesem Quartett bin ich zu Tränen ergriffen,

Same here!
One of the greatest ballads ever written. Timeless and evergreen.
You can't go wrong with Lucia and Gundula, two of my three favourite countesses from Figaro!

Beethoven is great. :)
My favorite Lucia Popp video on You Tube. She is so emotionally vivid and vulnerable here that the music seems to flow like tears.
magnificent . also perfect tempo and orchestra does not dominate. vale Lucia Popp.
Sublime, wonderful. We can be very thankful that Beethoven wrote this masterpiece, his one and only opera.
What a beautiful work. I've listened to it over and over and still enjoy it.
Fantastische Inszenierung und überragende SängerInnen!

Why is this act so problematic?

In the old Aria tradition, it should depict a single ''affection'' in all its beauty
@@aymericpatricot3264 Good question! I should have written that it is the dramatic disconnect between the acts that is problematic.

Sublime. I just love this piece. Thank you so much for sharing it.
