Thank you for showing my beautiful home town! KC is such a great city as long as you don't mind being inland. Jazz, barbecue, and all four seasons, sometimes all in one day! I did a show honoring the Rosies of WWII at Wheeler Airport.
This brought back great memories of flying with my father in law, George Galloway. He passed away in 1999 and I sure do miss him. He was an avid flyer and had owned many a plane throughout his life. He caught the fly bug when he was 7 years old and he talked his parents to give him a nickle (yep...5 cents) to go up with a WW1 veteran pilot giving thrill rides at the Trego County fair in 1920. He would be turned down for military service in WW2 because the feds wanted him to keep growing wheat for the war effort. His younger brother went instead. He never got over that. So George became a Civil Patrol "spotter" during the war and, in 1947, created the Kansas State Chapter of The Flying Farmers of America and was its first president. He was an Oshkosh visitor EVERY year and LOVED experimental aircraft. All of his life came flooding back to me watching this clip!!! My very first flight with him (and my first in a small plane) was out of Wheeler downtown! Thanks you! Made my day!!! Keep the sky happy!
Welcome back to Kansas City ... hope you enjoyed the BBQ that night. On your approach you can see work on the new Buck O'Neill bridge by the airport over the Missouri.

Love flying into Wheeler airport! Those tower controllers are so awesome, giving pilots the option on runways and all...as for the tight base, the controllers are also awesome about letting pilots base "north or south of the skyline." Tighter if you base north, but very fun as you come in low over the River Market neighborhood. If you base south of the main building cluster (my original instructor, Wes McCullough, used to call it the "saddle" between the main skyline and the crown center high-rises) you have a much longer approach and time to configure the plane. Either way, KMKC is always fun to fly into! Thanks for sharing this experience and I hope the BBQ met your expectations!
The BBQ was excellent (as usual in Kansas City)! I really do like the Downtown airport a lot. The city seems to have established it to welcome GA pilots to Kansas City. Something I wish Chicago's mayor Daley had done, too, instead of closing Meigs Field. Regards, Martin

Thanks for letting me "ride along", it was a nice familiarization. You were flying through my aviation backyard (IKV, LMN, IRK) This summer I am going to start what I hope to be many trips into the KC Class B.
Always fun to ride along with you. This was definitely a beautiful day for flying for sure thanks for bringing us along with you and I'll see you in the next one.
Nice flight. I noticed some ignition harness leakage on the radio when you had the ATIS tuned in. Weaker stations make that interference audible. You can verify it’s a plug wire arcing by tuning to a weak station (distant ATIS) and then change the engine rpm while listening for a corresponding change in the static.
Yes, I know what you are referring to, John. But what to do about it? The ignition harness is not even two years old. It's not perfect, but I'm not ready to spend money on it yet just in hopes to make it better. Thanks for pointing it out. - Martin
Nice flight. I learned to fly in the KC area at two airports that do not exist now. Hillside, far south and Stateline at Stateline and 150, I think. Commercial at OJC.
I’m from the Quad Cities, graduated from Iowa State and worked at the Wheeler airport for a couple of years. Still live in KC just north of the downtown airport. Whenever I traveled to work, I always thought “trains, planes and automobiles” as there would often be an aircraft approaching for landing over head with the trains running to the east of the cars on the highway.
Somewhat parallel lives. I'm also grew up in the Quad Cites (actually Eldridge/North Scott), then went to ISU, and now live about 6 miles north of the other KC airport (KCI).
