I’m a metal head, I listen to stuff like Megadeth, KISS, Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, stuff like that but this song started it all for me. I know that it’s not even hard rock or anything but this is the song that got me in to classic stuff back when I was around 8 or 9. I’m 16 now and I still look back at this song from time to time because it truly is a great song and I appreciate my step grandfather for introducing me to it.
I grew up with hearing this on AM radio. It's awesome to appreciate the roots of where hard rock and metal derived from. And I was into the 80's metal scene in real time. Music is where it's at. Keep on rockin, guys.
I am now 60 years old and know that horns are all made of brass and the song is about dying, but I don’t think they qualify as a death metal 😂 which is good because I like metal but death metal not so much.
This song is written by the Bronx child prodigy and genius singer/songwriter, Laura Nyro, from her first LP 'More Than a New Discovery' released January 1967 when she was aged 19. She wrote 'And When I Die' when she was aged 16. At one time she was approached by BST to be their singer, but she declined to pursue her solo career, At that time, David Geffen was her manager. Nyro is loved and revered by the music industry as one of its greatest ever talents. Just about every artist, producer and musician is a fan, to this day. She passed from ovarian cancer in 1997 aged 49. She had a son, her one child born. She was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2012 by Bette Midler, with her son Gil accepting the award.
It was the first night of shrimping season. About 1992, so close to the ocean I could almost see the waves breaking from a 14 foot jon boat.. A hell of a storm came out of nowhere so I ran the boat up in the marsh grass and turned the little boat upside down over me and my guests. I sang this song because I just knew my life was over. It seemed to have appeased everybody. I am a conservative and make no excuses for it.. Seems like I would have sung a spiritual , so beats me.
Bless you Lupco for such a thorough presentation of Laura. If you asked the age and gender of the songwriter, you'd never ever, ever get anyone to say "Oh that sounds like a song a 16 year girl penned."
I was just a little kid when song came out but came to LOVE it by listening to my older brothers' music. This song's so amazing on so many levels and I miss this kind of fantastic melding of words and music and the feelings they give.
As a former trombone and tuba player, I love a brass section in any song. Bands like B.S. and T. and Chicago have a totally unique sound that simply doesn't exist any more. Thanks for posting this clip! Loved the tuba solo.
Wonderful track by a superb band I'm a 69 yo Australian & saw them live in the early 70's i think. This was in Melbourne at The Festival Hall & they were incredible. I remember that David Clayton Thomas was wearing leather pants & was in great voice. Of course the whole band was wonderful & don't they create great sounds. +Warm Badger No matter what it is called. I raised several teenagers, some in school bands as well as their friends. MANY thought they were the so-called geeks of the music world. Then I pointed out videos like this that had a mix of instruments. One of the newest was a Shania Twain concert with a gentleman playing an "accordion" on stage with her. Music is just that, music. If you are good, you deserve praise.
Going to college in early 70's didn't like these guys so much, David's voice didn't strike me well. Now older but maybe not wiser, just absolutely love his voice and the group along with the songs.
On this day in 1969 {October 12th} "And When I Die" by Blood, Sweat, and Tears entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #50; and on November 23rd, 1969 it peaked at #2 {for 1 week}... It was BS&T's third straight release to peak at #2, it followed "You've Made Me So Very Happy" and "Spinning Wheel", and all three records each spent 13 weeks a piece on the Top 100... The week "And When I Die" was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "Come Together/Something" by the Beatles...
Hey guys, Blood, Sweat, and Tears gave us the feeling that we were not musical nerds after all. We actually did know great music. I don't think any other band came as close to blending Jazz, Blues, and Rock and still managed to sell millions of records. The music speaks for itself.
I had the pleasure of playing with the tuba player. He was our guest soloist at Newberry College in March of 1999 at our jazz festival. He is amazing on trombone and euphonium too.
No rule says it has to be 'your' child. Any'll do. [possesion mine and your's - live only in duality]☮️ This and Norman Greenbaum's, 'Spirit in the Sky' were playing on the radio in Colorado, as I was seeking guidance, via radiowave after a bad news call at work in college-- my brother had been hit by a car while on his bicycle and died on the east coast of a brain bleed- we were born same day 8 yrs apart. Flew home next day. Already knew before seeing family after deplaning. Tears and Joy dear brother~ twin spook🖤🎃💛
i saw bst last year (all new members) and they kicked ass!!! got them to autograph my "return of the king" hobbit book. like sheldon pointed out if stan lee signed a batman comic book it would be unique!

Po uzatvorení zmluvy so spoločnosťou Columbia Records nahrali album Child Is Father To The Man, ktorý predstavil zmes bluesových skladieb ovplyvnených psychadelickým rockom, klasickou hudbou s jazzovo znejúcimi dychmi, ktorých autorom najmä Kooper.

tenor sax, bill tillman, moved to dallas in the late 70s and played in the dallas jazz orchestra for several years before forming his own band. he was fun to play with and I guess he's still playing. man, could he eat. I watched him throw down half a cake and gallon of ice cream in one sitting.
Born too late to see them live, thankful they recorded their talent for my generation to enjoy!!!
David Clayton Thomas is one the most under rated singers to come out of Canada
!
He had a very questionable personal reputation... Folks in the music biz kept their distance. Terrific singer, none-the-less.
Canada one of the most underrated countries in North America
@@Avaloch67 According to who or what? I can't find any information regarding any sort of disreputation.
Most underrated anywhere.

I'm with you. I grew up playing Slayer, Pantera, Megadeth riffs on the guitar, now I mostly listen to this kinda stuff. Welcome to middle age.

I used to love hearing David Clayton Thomas sing. Wow, what a marvelous voice!!!
I agree. should be in the hall. great voice great instrumentals great showmanship god bless laura for writing this song rest in peace
Dave Bargeon was the trombone/tuba player. Still active, first call studio musician in NY. Truly a great player
what a great singer and such a smooth voice with sooo much character. Awesome.
David Clayton Thomas and Burton Cummings: the two best Canadian singer of all time!
What about Celine Dion? 😁
Neil Young and Leonard Cohen..

Clayton-Thomas has the edge. Neil Young has the best songs. If only they teamed up, both bands in full on stage.

A cosmic collision. One of the boldest creative improv bands and the beautiful lyrics of one of the best songwriters of our age.
This song is so good the band is so tight. David is one hell of a singer
Great job David and the band this is absolutely fantastic
Great vocal, and flawless ensemble playing
Just proves that talent is talent no matter the instrument. Marvelous.

The tuba solo really rocks. Something they could only do in the 1970s.
A much called for Tuba solo, god bless the band that has a Tuba Solo in it.

Lyric is "one child born in this world to carry on"
GhilleSasanach Actually, the original lyric as written by Laura Nyro was, "There'll be one child born and a world to carry on."
Best decade EVER!!! BS&T are/were wonderful, love them!
I wish the generation we live in now still made music this good. Especially with tuba solos. Better than lil wayne

Some of that tuba reminded me of scenes from Jaws and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind for some reason. I loved it! Fantastic soloing !
They don't make/sing songs like this anymore, do they. Mr. Thomas has got a voice like the desert wind--penetrating, powerful.
Great simile, as in Wordsworth's sonnet to Milton, "thou hadst a voice whose sound was like the sea."

tuba solo...that's soooo coool. these were the songs coming out when i was 1st becoming "grown up". heaven can hold no better feelings!

paula orr I got a fever.....and the only prescription is more cow bell.... I the cock of the walk!
Been looking for this for years. Thanks.
They had the balls to play hard core jazz - lots of charisma. The cowboy theme inserted is great too!
This is the band that I was mesmerized with. First time I heard was when I was sophmore
