This song is written by the Bronx child prodigy and genius singer/songwriter, Laura Nyro, from her first LP 'More Than a New Discovery' released January 1967 when she was aged 19. She wrote 'And When I Die' when she was aged 16. At one time she was approached by BST to be their singer, but she declined to pursue her solo career, At that time, David Geffen was her manager. Nyro is loved and revered by the music industry as one of its greatest ever talents. Just about every artist, producer and musician is a fan, to this day. She passed from ovarian cancer in 1997 aged 49. She had a son, her one child born. She was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2012 by Bette Midler, with her son Gil accepting the award.

It was the first night of shrimping season. About 1992, so close to the ocean I could almost see the waves breaking from a 14 foot jon boat.. A hell of a storm came out of nowhere so I ran the boat up in the marsh grass and turned the little boat upside down over me and my guests. I sang this song because I just knew my life was over. It seemed to have appeased everybody. I am a conservative and make no excuses for it.. Seems like I would have sung a spiritual , so beats me.

Bless you Lupco for such a thorough presentation of Laura. If you asked the age and gender of the songwriter, you'd never ever, ever get anyone to say "Oh that sounds like a song a 16 year girl penned."

I’m a metal head, I listen to stuff like Megadeth, KISS, Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, stuff like that but this song started it all for me. I know that it’s not even hard rock or anything but this is the song that got me in to classic stuff back when I was around 8 or 9. I’m 16 now and I still look back at this song from time to time because it truly is a great song and I appreciate my step grandfather for introducing me to it.

I grew up with hearing this on AM radio. It's awesome to appreciate the roots of where hard rock and metal derived from. And I was into the 80's metal scene in real time. Music is where it's at. Keep on rockin, guys.

    • @512Chaos
      @512Chaos 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Joe Herald A little bit perhaps, the Beastie Boys had a great impact ion the music world and changed a landscape. The albums are so much more than the radio play - like any proper band even BST.
KISS makes me feel bad about music in general, ushered in advertising and merchandising over quality, top shelf manure. The world will be a better place once the whole clown class falls off of the earth... They can take their bastard children ICP with them.

Says it right in this song..."don't want to go with the devil, don't want to go with satan".....to get in the hall/hell, you have to be one of 'them' that go with the devil. That's the music industry = satan.

Then I pointed out videos like this that had a mix of instruments.
One of the newest was a Shania Twain concert with a gentleman playing an "accordion" on stage with her.
Music is just that, music. If you are good, you deserve praise.

On this day in 1969 {October 12th} "And When I Die" by Blood, Sweat, and Tears entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #50; and on November 23rd, 1969 it peaked at #2 {for 1 week}...
It was BS&T's third straight release to peak at #2, it followed "You've Made Me So Very Happy" and "Spinning Wheel", and all three records each spent 13 weeks a piece on the Top 100...
The week "And When I Die" was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "Come Together/Something" by the Beatles...

A characteristic of musicians of this era is they could play because of their talent. Today's "artists" use technology to hide their short comings.

There was plenty of that sort of thing in the Good Old Days too. Think of the famous classic rock vocalists who curiously failed to hit all the high notes on their hits when performing live.

Not surprised at all by that. The look says Haight Ashbury. The sound says Julliard!

That tuba player used to follow me around when I was a young fat lad. Every damn time I fell he would play a little diddy.

Считаю голос Д.Клейтона-Томаса одним из лучших в джаз роке: за мощь, красоту, силу и не подражаемость.

This and Norman Greenbaum's, 'Spirit in the Sky' were playing on the radio in Colorado, as I was seeking guidance, via radiowave after a bad news call at work in college-- my brother had been hit by a car while on his bicycle and died on the east coast of a brain bleed- we were born same day 8 yrs apart. Flew home next day. Already knew before seeing family after deplaning. Tears and Joy dear brother~ twin spook🖤🎃💛

I had the pleasure of playing with the tuba player. He was our guest soloist at Newberry College in March of 1999 at our jazz festival. He is amazing on trombone and euphonium too.

Great song! But there is hope when you die.... it is to be with God. We would all go to hell, if it was not for the saving of our souls by Christ's death on the cross. Those who repent, accept the unconditional gift of eternal life from God shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Jew, muslin, atheist, black, white, red yellow... it does not matter. NO-ONE can enter the kingdom of heaven but by Jesus Christ. Believe in Him and enjoy ETERNAL LIFE, starting today.

Man i can only watch BST with the David Clayton Thomas era. But anyways do you see these guys all having a good time or what? c'mon who lets a member playing the damn tuba have a solo? Do you see anyone like Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears half naked do anything as remotely fascinating as this? I hope we come back to a time where music goes back to instruments and just good old fashioned singing with a message.

By the way, I am not a bible basher, and have never written such words before. This very song made me question the futility of life. I did not find God... He found me. This song mean a lot to me. Sorry if I offended anyone with what I firmly is the truth.

DCT, vocalist, is still living and performing, btw!

This was an average performance with not the best recording technology used. Michael Clayton-Thomas was capable of higher, deeper, and longer bellows than this performance. Which is fantastic as it is. I think other Michael Clayton-Thomas fans know what I'm saying. He could deliver singing performances that frankly to me, only Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple, etc etc) and Freddie Mercury could match live. Ozzy when he was young had it live or in studio (Ozzy was amazing for about 5 years there). Robert Plant and Al Greene. Lots of great singers. I usually end up on Clayton-Thomas or Glenn Hughes as greatest male singers, perhaps ever. I don't mean opera singers, because who knows? But in everything else of all genres: best male singer. The women have tons of great. Clayton-Thomas is my male version of Nina Simone. Sade and Lucinda Williams probably my personal favorites, but Nina could sing anything she wanted.

Don't get me wrong, these guys are stellar musicians. The massive success of the second album bankrolled a train wreck of kitschy arrangements, self-indulgent solos, and insanely overdone vocal histrionics that took nearly a decade to clear away, and even today the zombified husk plagues casino halls! Lord knows, I turn to BST frequently enough on a bad day, and they always make me smile, so hi-de-ho, and HUH-HA YEAH!
