There are tons of hair cutting tuts on youtube. This one has a unique approach, love this method. This also works on less convieniant backgrounds. Thnx again

Great video. I also liked the tip about the adjusting the mask density. That will be a big help on my other masking projects.

works for a white background, i'd like to see what would happen to his cutout on any noticeably different color background.
    1) there's light green/gray background colours in between hairs.
    2) there's reflective light on the skin/shirt/hair that would look wrong.

Agree. If a dark background is used as a replacement, we're sure to see all kinds of unwanted white bits and will look terrible for sure

I don't have Photoshop CC, I am using Photoshop Elements 15. This brush preset works in Elements but you don't have as much control as in the Photoshop CC. Thanks for creating and sharing this preset.

Now I need your help getting rid ZebraFace...those dark shadows caused by the rims/frames of eyewear! My effort always looks waxy and totally unconvincing. Can you please do a tutorial on the best way to deal with this problem? I'll look every day :) Cheers - Kevin

Aaron, thx for the great lesson! But I have one question - What should we do if our object is woman? With long hairs.
Cause few days ago I retouched 30 images of children in studio on white (mostly) background. And besides sking retouch I needed to cutout them from that background. And there was 5 children in different clothes (some of them was hairy), with different hairs. And it was boys and girls.
I did it as usually - mask from one of the channel (blue mostly), do some contrast adjusment for this mask and many many hand adjusments, cause Refine Mask or other automate tools are...stupid. Poor results.
So ok, your method is great till we have short mostly straight hairs. But if it long woman's hairs? And we have more than one image with different size of model in it.
Do you have any great method for this kind of situation?

Just a shame you used a relatively easy image to do this with. If the background would have been darker and you put it on a light background, it is way harder. Would have been nice to see houw you get along that.

It should be noted that this only really works if you are working with a source image that has a background colour that is similar to the one you are going to end up with. If you were going to isolate this person and then try to put, say a red background behind him, you are going to be masking areas that don't actually have hair. So you will end up with a person that has blond and white hair on a red background.

Hi Aaron, I'm new to PS, so my Q may sound stupid. Are you using the Brush Tool in the tutorial, instead of the Quick Selection one, because the second is not so precise and may not always select the area, that needs to be cut, or...?
    Best regards!

I can't tell what, but something went wrong here. I got it right up to the point where only the face without hair is showing. But I couldn't use the brush to make the hair show. For some reason I can only use the brush on the face, but then what I get is a hairy face, which is not ideal, at least not the pic I want to use the technique on. Can you tell me what could I have done wrong?

A really helpful tutorial, as always... but now I want to be able to rotate my brush with the keyboard. I've been trying to find a way to do this. I tried to assign a shortcut, but there isn't an option for brush rotation in CS5 (which is what I have) so I tried recording an action, but that didn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks.
