Fantastic special effects by Ray Harryhausen and exciting mythological adventure make this a film that is fun for everyone. It's the story of Jason (Todd Armstrong), a fearless sailor and explorer, who returns to the kingdom of Thessaly after a 20-year voyage to make his rightful claim to the throne. But to do so, Jason must first find the magical Golden Fleece. He selects a crew and with the help of Hera, Queen of the Gods, sets sail in search of the Fleece. Jason and his crew must overcome incredible obstacles including a 100-foot bronze giant, the venomous Hydraa huge creature with the heads of seven snakes, and a spectacular battle with an army of skeletons.

I recommend the very interesting book, "The Baltic Origins of Homers Epic Tales" which sets out the case that the ancient Greeks were actually based around the Baltic Sea, ie. in northern Europe, during the Bronze Ages when temperatures were warmer than today (c.4000-2000BC). This makes more sense if you consider that the classical Greeks, who were much later, were themselves questioning when - and sometimes where - their ancient legends had taken place. The legends pre-dated the Myceneans, who were before the classical Greeks.
Anyway, one point that came to mind when watching this event to assemble a crew, was that there was a tradition in parts of northern Europe, that when men agreed to serve a master, such as on a long voyage or in battle, then the oath they took often required them to attribute all successes and glory gained by them to the master, ie. the 'hero.' So these ancient Greek 'heros' were not normal people but young aristocrats and for them the glory and reputation were a big deal, even if much or most was really due to the valour and efforts of their men.

Refused the help of the gods?!?

The gods were a selfish, fanciful, powerful and easily irked bunch, so there were often unforeseen complications of accepting their help.

How did he fund these games?

The heros of the ancient Greek legends were not normal people but the elites of their societies, effectively aristocracy, with land, livestock, men and good connections to others like them. So they had money or had family or friends with money. Perhaps the games even funded themselves, as all the young aristocrats of the surrounding regions would have come to compete for glory and a place on the ship. I think Bronze Age societies were often more complex than we tend to think.
