Fantastic special effects by Ray Harryhausen and exciting mythological adventure make this a film that is fun for everyone. It's the story of Jason (Todd Armstrong), a fearless sailor and explorer, who returns to the kingdom of Thessaly after a 20-year voyage to make his rightful claim to the throne. But to do so, Jason must first find the magical Golden Fleece. He selects a crew and with the help of Hera, Queen of the Gods, sets sail in search of the Fleece. Jason and his crew must overcome incredible obstacles including a 100-foot bronze giant, the venomous Hydraa huge creature with the heads of seven snakes, and a spectacular battle with an army of skeletons.

"Wait, this is ancient Greece! They didn't have ruins yet!" -Crow T. Robot, MST3K 502 Hercules (And something that always makes me chuckle when watching this film)
Another fantastic scene from the EPIC movie Jason and the Argonauts!
Those Harpies would definitely give another the chills alright!
Forget CGI. I'll take Harryhausen's effects, any day!!!
Indeed
'Legend' is an overused term... however, Harryhausen was a bona fide legend - it's simply an inarguable fact. One look at the harpies or the skeleton warriors tells you all you need to know.

Love it where patrick Troughton pats the table and rubs his hands at all the food for him, brilliant actor
What a brilliant film this is.
I love the end bit when harpies are captured and he has the food and drink; he claps his hands, giddy 🤣 always makes me smile 😊❤️ thank you!!
Zeus went too far with Phineas. Punishing him with the harpies. Now Phineas gets to enjoy a good meal and they have to eat scraps

thats Beautiful animation right there from Ray,
how the Harpies show up at the usual time for their meal and Phineas is not there, and they look around for him and see him there, and you see the wings rise up as they notice him.
I love it that even though they are Creatures and Monsters of Myth, Ray was able to "Humanize" them, make them seem real, treating them more like actors emoting through their body language than just his figures to be moved back and forth.
I know people praise the stop motion but the music is really what stands out for this me - the slow build up that marries up with the Argonauts and then the xylophone as the Harpies try to escape and then the sudden horn section as they "get to the ropes" and then the triumphant finish at the end.
Well said my friend!
Music by Bernard Herrmann. One of the best movie score composers of all time.
I know what you mean, its impressive when they bring the ropes
Bernard Herrman eliminated the string section entirely for this film, focusing instead on woodwind, horns and mallets.
Personally for me it was the detail that the Argonauts specifically turn their spears, when warding off the harpies, showing their intent was to capture and not kill them. To kill the harpies would have invoked the wrath of Zeus, but capturing and rendering them harmless was a clever workaround. And Jason, of course, was known for his wits.
this scene always stood out for me, the sadness that they would come everyday and steal the blind mans food. They got theirs in the end
Absolutely love what the Argonauts are wearing
All these clips make me want to watch the film again.
i would sooner watch these older films with harryhausen effects than anything being produced today...ray was a master.
Ray Harryhausen is a genius. :)
Yes he was amazing 👏 man 👨 ❤️
@@rosehernandez475 the skeletons in this movie are my favorite stop motion sequence of all time. 😎👍

I remember being 8 & watching this with my dad on Sunday night movies
The late, great Patrick Troughton.
He played Doctor Who on Television.
LOVE this movie so much! :)
Oh my giddy aunt. Yep that's Patrick Troughton aka Doctor Number Two as tge blind seer.
لقد تذكرت الخفافيش العملاقة في المشهد عدت الى الحنين يالها من فترة زمانية 😢كان فيلم مدهش
Very nicely animated.
Agreed. ^_^
Loved this Sequence from Jason & the Argonauts.
It Was Brilliant.
One of my favorites when I was young and still great today! Excellent stuff!
What I always thought funny about this scene is the absolutely HUGE net they just happened to have on the ship. I mean its big enough to enclose a whole temple. Who packed that thinking it might come in handy :) Slight technical issue. According to mythos there where three harpies and you only seem to have got two. Still well done team ......
Antes eram filmes bom que saudades
The fruit and foods always makes me hungry
Those naughty Harpies! 😂
Very realistic scene very nice
Wait - How did they get up to the top of the pillars - And where did they get such a huge net from ??
still fun an intense scene, very well filmed
My favorite part of the movie
Supr díl chcem cely
The Harpies remind me of my ex-wife's family descending on a table of food.
DAMN!!!!!......🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tbh for it's time it was ground breaking
This was filmed at Paestum, a Greek archaeological site a couple hours, if that, south of Pompei, that is, assuming it is not a blue screen..
The only thing I don"t get is why they waited so long before dropping the net
They had to time it properly
For argument's sake: they might want to tire out and distract the Harpyies by distress first, so that they don't have enough power to resist their caption in the net.
To give them a bit of their own medicine first, I think!
Fantástica
"Holy harpies, Batman. Your ancestors were monsters!"
One thing watching this now is i question why didnt they kill the harpies?
Guy from rat patrol, The English officer with Troy..
Yes. Indeed. Gary Raymond
Those harpies look like purple gargoyles to me.
Phineas is like the anti-Job. Instead of continuing to show blind devotion to god despite the horrible treatment he receives, Phineas openly defies Zeus for punishing him so severely and undeservingly.
I don’t blame Phineas. He made a mistake and went blind for it, but Zeus sending harpies to torment and starve him of food is just plain petty.
Zeus may have been A God, but evidently was not THE God, therefore it was God who intervened by sending Jason by Devine intervention. There's only one true God. The Alpha and the Omega.
@@NO-GAMES This is also still a fantasy movie, where one dude is being attacked by harpies.
We all have to deal with Harpies in our lives.
“What in the name of the gods’ are they?”
Me: one is my ex-wife for sure.
He should've used his Sonic Screwdriver on them

Where is Euphemus?

Gold are cruel indeed.
Where does? the net come from
Michael Hoang - When the men aren't filming, they fill their time by knitting, hence the Net ! 😁
Always a Good Idea to Bring a Big Net.
Greek historians believe that the Argonauts are today's equavilant of special forces
Anyone heard of a bow and arrow?
Comical, how ancient people believed in the gods
Why is it comical? It took mankind thousands of years to build civilizations and have enough understanding of nature, the world, science and other disciplines to understand the world around us. The ancient peoples had no such background to explain ANYTHING in the world. But they did start civilization that built upon itself, generation upon generation until we have people today .... who mindlessly spout inane stuff on the internet, thanks to people who were much smarter who actually BUILT societies and civilizations.....
And I didn’t even know the 2nd Doctor himself is the blind Phineas.
Wait what?
Patrick Throughton was also in Sinbad & The Eye of the Tiger.
This is what happens to the old, the poor, the sick when Glass Steagall is repealed!
In the name of Zeus!
Really hate the harpies. Such bullies. Harryhausen animation captures their nastiness so well. Great to see them captured and served their own medicine.
That's a lot of netting
I thought that was Herpies 😲💀

The harpies look like demons
Harry hausen basically copied a winged homunculus as the design for these harpies. The classical Harpies were originally supposed to be half bird/half woman, usually a great bird with the head of a woman and hands where the claws are. I prefer this incarnation of them since the original appearance of a harpy looks good in books but probably ridiculous in movies.
Harpies supposed to half woman and half bird

Joy Behar’s first Hollywood role…
😄😄😄
I’ve called Marjorie Taylor Greene a vile harpy since she behaves like one.
these are not harpies, but sucubus
They are more likely an Imp.
These are not succubuses. Those were creatures who appeared often time in dreams and reality as desirable women, sucking the life out of those who looked upon them.
They are not imps either. Even though imps are in European mythology, they are not necessarily Greek. Aericas, of Greek folklore, are similar to them, but are invisible. The creatures shown here are definitely harpies.
@@brandoncruise6398 You're absolutely right.
There many different versions of Harpies.
Those are harpies. 2 sisters if I'm not mistaken. There was a third one Caeleno, but shes not there.
Always reminded me of X-Men's Mystique.
