      1) He kept them close by in case he ever needed to protect any of them.
      2) The magic of the Hocruxes have to be within a certain distance of the owner in order for them to be effective. I'm only guessing this one because some charms and spells only span over limited distances.

      @ZEDDREX NAVARRA but Voldemort only intended to have a 7-part soul: 6 horcruxes and the remaining piece in his body. So, as Dumbledore explains in chapter 23 of Half Blood Prince, making 6 horcruxes should be his limit.
      However Voldemort goes beyond this by accidentally creating Harry as his 7th Horcrux, thereby making him have an 8-part soul. So 7 is not the limit.

    To clear up the comment section:
    Voldemort killed the six people to get the Horcruxes he mentions in the video (The diary, The ring, The cup, The diadem, The locket, and the snake) Because your own soul is the seventh part, he stops there having his soul split in 7 pieces which he thought was a good number. He accidentally created another Horcruxes in Harry splitting his soul into 8 pieces with 7 Horcruxes. He didn’t create more because he was only aware about the destroying of the Horcruxes for a short amount of time and didn’t think anyone would find them all.

    • @palmagius
      @palmagius 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      i think he wanted to create 7 horcruxes. he has a horcrux in an item from every hogwarts founder except Gryffindor. the diadem of rowena, goblet of helga and locket of salazar. i think he tried to make a 7th horcrux of godric's sword when he went after the potter family but thnx to lily he accidently maked harry the 7th horcrux. he thought he failed but was too weak to create another one after that encounter. it isn't logical if he just stopped making horcruxes before he completed his hogwarts founder collection, just like its not logical to accidently split your soul. if its as easy as you killed someone you now have a horcrux, then a lot of wizards would have them by now. nah, voldy already started the ritual of putting it in godric's sword and then lily messed up the ritual causing the soul to latch unto harry instead

    • @MrKoraboras
      @MrKoraboras 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@palmagius He wanted 7 soul pieces - 6 horcruxes, 1 in his body. Lily and James never had the sword. The reason his soul split by accident, was because the horcrux spell was designed to be used one time, while he made 5 horcruxes by that point. Death from Avada caused his destabilized soul to split again and latch onto Harry. Basically doing it accidentally requires you to have done it on purpose several times beforehand... Which no one did, until Voldie.
      Also, Harry was the 6th horcrux. Nagini was made after the events of Philosopher's Stone, offscreen. Mainly because Voldie thought he was making her into the 6th, while unaware that he was actually making the 7th.
      It carries interesting implications though - Voldie turned himself into a more flawed immortal, than if he just made one or two horcruxes, as his soul can demonstrably be split with Avada right now, and there's supposed to be a limit to how much mangling a single soul can take... So basically if you barrage him with Killing Curses everytime he gets back into a body, eventually you'll destroy his soul - which is something people with just one horcrux can survive, since their souls are relatively intact by comparison.

      Also I think fear would play into it, because while objectively if you could make more you maybe would try to just keep making them, if you were truly afraid of dying then you wouldn’t want to be unsure of the number of lives you have left and you wouldn’t hide them too far away because if you were careless they could all get destroyed despite making new ones and you still wouldn’t know… Voldemort was truly afraid of dying, so he wouldn’t create something so important only to lose track of them and be unsure of how many he had actually made.

      No, the theory is that Voldemort was trying to create sixth (not seventh) horcrux with Harry's death using the sword of Gryffindor. This seems quite likely because he has already used objects relating to the other houses as horcruxes (and sword of Gryffindor could appear and disappear), he liked to create horcruxes with significant deaths, and at that point had "only" five horcruxes. Voldemort never knew Harry became a horcrux, and made Nagini a horcrux with the death of Berta Jorkins in 1994, when Voldemort was hiding in Albania. Voldemort thought Nagini was his sixth horcrux, but she was the seventh.

    How much of a soul does one need? Assuming that a Horcrux splits the soul exactly in half, by the time Voldemort made his final Horcrux, he would only have 1/128th of his soul left in his resurrected body.
    I think Voldemort knew that, had he made another Horcrux, there would be so little soul left that he’d abandon his ambitions of being the Dark Lord and enter politics.

    • @Draekmus
      @Draekmus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@Matty_Matty_Matty_Matty I made the assumption that the soul is split exactly in half. Your assumption is that the entire soul splits evenly, regardless of how many horcruxes there are. It’s an interesting idea but implies that the soul, though mangled, is still connected despite physical separation.
      Voldemort’s first Horcrux (the diary of I recall), would have 1/2 of his soul.
      But his body would only have half of his soul to work with for future Horcruxes.
      So his next Horcrux would contain half of his half-soul, or 1/4.
      And the next would house half of that quarter, or 1/8.
      So that’s three Horcruxes, and Voldemort already has only 1/8 of his original soul in his body.
      The next three would leave him with 1/16, 1/32, and 1/64th of his original soul, respectively.
      Which is interesting because it could mean that the only reason Harry could withstand Voldemort’s soul fragment is because it is substantially smaller than a normal Horcrux would be.
      After Nagini, with only 1/128th of his original soul, I think Voldemort couldn’t risk creating another Horcrux without potentially losing his soul. What was left of it.
      I think it might be interesting that, if magic is connected to the soul, that Voldemort actually made himself WEAKER with each successive Horcrux.

      I challenge this idea. There is no...absolutely NO...indication in the books that each time a horcrux is created, the soul, or whatever fraction remains, is split exactly in half. I've split wood many times, and each cut is never exactly half. With a large part of the trunk, one splits it into several smaller pieces, none of which are half.
      To my thinking, when the soul is split, a fragment is concealed in an object for safe keeping. Never does it say that fragment is literally half.
      Of course, it all leads back to V's soul being so maimed and fragmented, he had little left, once the horcruces were destroyed. But when one is dealing with a human soul, literal mathematics seem moot to me.

      This is accurate, yes.
      It’s not specifically stated though if Voldemort used Naginis venom to create a body BEFORE she became a horcrux or after though; but it could be either case since he could have been using any other loyal host at the time he made the Nagini horcrux;
      I think it’s a rather interesting fact that he made nagini a horcrux considering she was both snake and ‘human’; but also used her venom for this very reason since, magically speaking, she was connected to both makes and humans.
      This venom, along with unicorn blood(sustaining life upon the brink of death), along with a unique spell or two allowed worm tail to create Voldemort a baby-like body that was hairless and scaly; rather snakelike indeed.
      This could be the biggest reason why he looked snakelike after his resurrection; because the baby-body he had used was indeed part snake.

    Voldemort created 7 horcruxes in total, Harry being an unintentional horcrux. A piece of his soul latched on to Harry after his body was destroyed due to his killing curse rebounding once Lily stepped in his way when trying to murder an infant Harry.
    His first horcrux was Tom Riddles diary, being more of a weapon, used to once again open the Chamber of Secrets once the diary enters Hogwarts. He murdered Moaning Myrtle in order to create this one.
    His second was the Gaunt Family ring and he used his father and grandfather to create this one.
    His third horcrux was Helga Hufflepuffs Cup and he murdered Hepzibah Smith in order to create this one.
    His fourth horcrux was Salazar Slytherins Locket, and he killed a random muggle in order to create this one.
    His fifth horcrux was Ravenclaws diadem and he killed an Albanian Traveler in order to create this one.
    His sixth horcrux was Harry himself, as I've previously stated. He killed Lily Potter in order for his sixth horcrux to be created, without his knowledge.
    His 7th horcrux was actually Nagini and was the last horcrux that he created. He had killed Bertha Jorkins in order to create this one and created this horcrux when he was still in his frail and infant like body we seen in the movie "Goblet of Fire."
    But Voldemort wanted to create 7 horcruxes in all, with 7 being the most powerful magically number. As the number 7 has popped up in the Harry Potter franchise in every movie, multiple times.
    We dont know what would have been his final horcrux, as to his own knowledge he still only had 6 horcruxes. He didnt know Harry was a horcrux, so to Voldemort, he only had 6, not 7. So it's safe to assume that he still wanted to create one last horcrux.

      Voldemort hesitated to kill Lily at first, due to Snapes begging of him to spare Lily and he gave her a chance to join him and his Death Eaters. Which she declined and he told her to step aside, which she refused to. So he then decided to attack Harry and end it there but due to Voldemort sparing Lily, when she defied him once more and stepped in to protect her son, that is what caused the protection.
      All of the circumstances that happened when Voldemorts body was first destroyed was 1 in a million.

    I love when everyone suggests him picking a regular stone and throw in the ocean. That’s kinda what he did with the diadem and the ROR. First, for someone to suggest a stone is just as barbaric as someone suggesting an artifact that is been lost for centuries. Secondly, pinning it down to the ROR would suggest Voldy got back into hogwarts (which I think only dumbledore knew 100% bc he wanted the DADA position). And third, even if you know it’s the diadem in the ROR, it would take forever (unless u can sense them like Harry). So to Voldemort this one horcrux was his like 100% no one is going to find it. And Harry wouldn’t of even found it if Voldy didn’t have his little panic attack after Gringotts.

    100%(full soul) is split = 50% of soul left (1st Horcrux)
    50% is split = 25% left (2nd Horcrux)
    25% is split = 12.5% left (3rd Horcrux)
    12.5% is split = 6.25% left (4th Horcrux)
    6.25% is split = 3.125% left (5th Horcrux)
    3.125% is split = 1.56% left (6th Horcrux)
    1.56% is split = 0.78% left (7th Horcrux)
    Vold now has less than 1% of his soul left. This is why he made no more Horcruxes. And with the 8th Horcrux (Harry)...
    0.78% split = 0.39%. Also explains why Vold doesnt have more control over Harry; Harry only had 0.39% of Volds soul inside him 🤘👍 Yay math.

    Seven is an extremely symbolic number. Voldemort had only intended to split his soul six times for a total of seven pieces. The books flat out state that one Horcrux is horrific enough in what it does to your soul, and we all know what six does to someone's appearance. Voldemort's soul was severely damaged and warped by the time he went to kill the Potters. Inadvertantly creating the seventh Horcrux within Harry then made seven pieces of soul into eight, ruining the symbolism, which is extremely significant. Hence things like the connection between the two.

    Good video! I always adored the idea of Tom Riddle brutally sacrificing pieces of his own in the process of taking other people's lifes. I also like to think that his body transfigured after any committed murder, so the once human face slowly began to change to a snake like demon. If he made more horcruxes he could have gone broke and looking like a possessed toddler again.
    I always fancied the design of other dark wizards, for they are mostly fearsome easy to recognize, but they still look like real people. Voldi however is the only portrayed human wizard that could have easily been just "another breed that created a magic wand". Just imagine him working. "Okay, number 5, I am getting good at this - oh feck, my nose fell off."

      Dumbledore was only a teacher of Transfiguration back when Tom Riddle was in the Orphanage. In the books its explained that a Hogwarts teacher will visit witches and wizards that are either Muggle Born or who live with Muggles and explain to either their carers or the witch/wizard themselves what Hogwarts is and that they're a wizard. They'll then personally give the witch/wizard their Hogwarts letter. Harry wasn't visited by a Hogwarts teacher until the Dursley's moved to the island in the middle of the sea because they were under the assumption that Harry already knew about being a wizard. Obviously Hagrid was then sent after the letters went unread by Harry to explain the situation because of the Dursley's moving around the country and the amount of letters being sent to Harry by the charmed quill that wrote Hogwarts Letters.

    Honestly, I think that if Voldemort created more Horcruxes, it would have left him on the brink of death. Dividing himself into seven pieces is bad enough, but creating an eighth could make things worse. Besides, it might be that it would take too long to create a new Horcrux, as by the time he would, he would have already turned into Creepy Flakes. It would just destroyed by Harry and company.

    Creating a horcrux takes a set amount of the soul, presumably 1/7th. By the time he went to kill Harry, he only had 1/7th of his soul left in his body which then latched itself onto Harry. When he went to regenerate himself with the rebirth ritual, he took Harry’s blood which put a bit of his own soul (let’s say 1/14th for simplicity), as well as a bit of Harry’s soul into him (also saying 1/14th bc that would give Voldy 1/7th of a soul but in two parts). At this point, his soul was in 8 uneven pieces with one seventh having been destroyed. Even if he had considered creating what to his knowledge would have been a 7th horcrux he wouldn’t have had any soul left to give, even if it wasn’t already in 8 pieces. Also, since a bit of Harry’s soul was inside Voldemort from the rebirth ritual, he effectively became a horcrux for Harry, but that was addressed in another video

    Judging from how the book phrased it, it's the killing that shatters a soul, and i doubt he only killed 7 people to make 7 horcruxes (I like to count Quirrell as an horcrux). Then creating the horcrux would just be about sending the lost soul piece into an object. I think Voldemort could have easily created more if he was not overconfident and obsessed with the number 7. The weirdest thing for me, with Voldemort; by the time he killed Harry's parents, he already had horcruxes in place, which I guess is why any of him "survived" his curse being rebounded back at him, but it seems it left him with so little. He was like a phantom, just living on the back of Quirrel's head, and even that after years. I can't say it didn't work, and he eventually even got a new, regenerated body, but a lich's phylactery his horcruxes weren't.

    Wait a second.. im just now realizing. When he accidentally made Harry into a horcrux, that was only the 6th one wasn't it? If he got Nagini from Bertha Jorkins, that was years after he destroyed himself from trying to kill Harry. So I dont think that Voldemorts soul had anything to do with his destruction from killing Harry, I think it was all from the Love lily gave him. So.. thinking this way, shouldn't we have ever heard about him destroying himself again when he made Nagini a horcrux? Since there was never a big deal made about it, im going to assume that its either an oversight, and Rowling missed it, or maybe there really isn't a limit to how many times you can split your soul. Because Harry wasn't the 7th horcrux, nagini was. Unless im wrong about the timeline, I dunno. But I am confused

    he didnt make more as they were destroyed because the parts of his soul trapped in each horcrux did not return back to him, they were destroyed along with the objects. This is why the act of creating horcruxes has always been seen as very risky and dangerous, because you are trusting your soul (very important) and its safety in a finite material object. As Voldemort's horcruxes were destroyed, pieces of his soul were dissappearing, leaving him with less than a soul to split anymore.

    Assuming that each split of his soul divided his remaining soul evenly from the amount of soul still contained in his original body, after the first split, he still contained half of his soul. After the second, half of that half would remain, being a fourth. By the time he killed Harry’s mom, only about 0.8% of his soul would be left in his body. Not 8 or 80%, 00.8%. As in 1/128. And after his body was destroyed, I would assume that that portion of his soul was lost forever. In which case, theoretically, unless his revival spell used up a chunk of soul from one of the horcruxs, thus draining it, his new body would just be a conduit for his remaining soul, absent of any soul itself. And because his body would be empty, he would have nothing left to break off and store in objects. That is my personal theory.

What happens then? Does your body continually age over your life? Do you grow increasingly old, decrepit, and senile? As far as I understand, Horcruxes keep you tethered to Earth in case your body is destroyed, meaning your body is still vulnerable to damage. Could that include damage be caused by aging?
    Imagine that. You're centuries old. Your body is barely functioning. Your brain turned to mush. Yet you cannot die. You cannot pass on. You cannot escape.

      I don't think a horcrux could really protect you from a natural death or at least it's not the point of it, since it's clearly a really different magic than the one used to create the philosopher's stone.
      I do believe however, that a powerful wizard can live a really long time anyway, and when you wish to be the greatest Dark wizard of all times, you don't really expect to die from a natural cause, and even if it could happen you would have a lot of time to think about it later.
      Maybe, just maybe, the part of your soul that you kept could grow old, while the others would stay at the state they were when you made the horcruxes, since they are not really resting in a conventional body anyway, kinda like the Tom Riddle in the diary was really similar to what he was at this age, and to return he would have to steal the energy of someone anyway, maybe in the wizarding world, being immortal is just as "simple" as stealing someone life anyway.
