I would like a video with cross streets and stop signs with you explaining when you are shifting down before each stop sign. I can't seem to figure out how soon to downshift. Thanks.
Hi. This is the first simple video explaining it. I'm taking lessons ready to sit my CBT but I was making mistakes with the shifting and couldn't quite understand why, the teacher explained it and I understood parts but I think in the enviroment I was over complicating things in my head which I do often. There are a lot of stupidly long videos explaining it but I feel they were over complicating it and making it more confusing. I'm not saying there aren't shorter videos out there that are good but this was honestly one of the better videos out of the lot.
Bought a Bandit 600 97' recently as my first bike. Watched this and practiced on a private lane. Has helped immensely. Gonna sort the license out proper soon.
Thank you for this. I have no prior experience with riding a bike or driving a manual car, went for my pre learners recently and in the segment where they ‘teach’ how to shift gears I kept being yelled at without telling me what I did wrong until I asked. Only then I was told I did not close the throttle. Shifting gears improved but now seeing what you actually do on video it makes way more sense. I wish instructors would step through things like you do. A lot of instructors here are riders of many years but not really great at teaching other people, which is sad for newbies like me who want to learn but don’t feel like being given a chance. In my country we can’t learn without a learners permit and getting that requires the knowledge of how to ride on the road. For newbies like me it’s really hard without having someone to teach the ropes and proper basic skills. It’s information and sensory overload for newbies so thank you for breaking things down.
Agree, long time riders don't remember the days of the "obvious" questions such as HOW do u know when to shift and the answer, "you can just tell'. No, I can't tell. "Shifting comes naturally." No, it doesn't. 'Pull up and stop." Um, do I brake then shift down or shift down then brake, or brake and shift down together? These are newb questions I need answers to and most TH-cam creators don't answer.
@@rocketmaam6898exactly! The instructor I had keep saying ‘you just have to get it’ I know I have to get it otherwise why would I be at the school? The issue isn’t I don’t know I have to learn this, the issue is I don’t know what I done wrong and how I can make it right. Watching them ‘demonstrate’ shifting while they riding around a couple of times doesn’t constitute teaching. I watch football all the time doesn’t make me a football player. Asking me why I stalled the bike doesn’t make me stop stalling the bike, neither does yelling at me about a pretend truck just ran me over. How does these people even get accredited to teach is beyond me.
This has been so helpful! Thank you 😄 I couldn't work out what I was doing wrong on my first lesson last week, but now I know it was because I kept the throttle going while shifting. Appreciate the simple explanations
I have my motorcycle training in a few weeks and I really hope I am over thinking this. Some of this seems like, “okay you’ll be fine when you get the hang of it” (I am VERY much a hands on learner) and the other half of me is like, “you should just skip the class, this is too complicated.”
@@DaFunkyFizz Hello! I passed my class yesterday and got my motorcycle endorsement, which in Arizona waves the testing for the license. The class was $398 for two days of training, mostly on the course and a little in classroom. Most difficult part for me was learning the clutch (and some shifting) because I stalled the bike a number of times on easing off. I had three instructors, two of them were extremely helpful, third one was helpful, but he came off as abrasive to me even though it was probably just me taking it that way. We had a few people in our class drop the bikes (no injuries), people were putting their feet down during U-Turns, but the BIGGEST thing that people kept doing was looking down at their bike / controls. The instructors were continuously reminding us not to do this as they want you to get use to head up, eyes up at all times. I'm not gloating, but I personally did not have this issue since I use an ebike everywhere and it's second nature for me to constantly monitor my surroundings. If you're thinking of doing it, take one of these course. I took the TEAM Ride Arizona course, so something similar to that wherever you are would be great.
Just bought my first bike i am so excited, im picking it up on saturday but i am kind of nervous riding it home for the first time about stalling to much
@@PetroHead well, just the little things, like putting in gear and want to drive away while your kickstand is still down. Do not hit the front break while steering left or right. That sort of things.
In my country, our roads have lots of speed bumps, and I want to know how to shift gears when approaching them. My motorcycle always stalls when I'm at the bumps, and I'm a beginner in riding motorcycles. Can you please advise on when to change gears when approaching speed bumps?
My biggest issue is wanting to roll through a stop sign because I don't want to come to a full stop and go back through the clutch and throttle transition lol
ayy man only one way to improve no1 will judge u friend im sure by now when u read this comment your long past that but best of luck on your riding journey
Can you start the bike without by engaging opening your throttle while controling the clutch? Or you have to pass the biting point of the clutch before you throttle? I subbed! Great video!
When shifting up, do you engage the clutch before rolling off the throttle, or vice versa? You stated the former process at 4:46, but the latter at 5:00. Also, when you shift up to 2nd gear (and 3rd, and 4th, an so on), do you need to release the clutch as slowly as you did when you put it into first? You looked like you were releasing it much more quickly when shifting into those higher gears.
Is it also possible to skip gears when upshifting(since you mentioned in the video you can skip gears when downshifting) by just pulling in the clutch and go to let's say 5th gear from 2nd?
tbh, I'm really a boring street rider.. I don't do canyons or twisty roads that much... I know myself and I will push too hard so right now, my fave is prob PCH. For fast riding, I hit the track. Plenty of track videos if you wanna see how I ride.
I drive a truck which is Automatic now but for years I drove manual. Looking for my first motorcycle. Watching this I want an Auto Motorcycle, I want to enjoy myself not be concentrating on shifting and clutching lol
What other riding tips / beginner rider videos do you guys want me to make? Leave a comment below! (next video is how to rev match!)
How do rpms work when shifting?

As a new rider, I’ve been stalling a lot. Just spent the last day practicing the clutch to see where the friction zone is and it’s def helping.
How's it going now my friend.
@@thomas8099 very good now, haven't stalled at a light in months. Just kept practicing and it paid off.
@chaoliu5036 did you take a course or just figured it out yourself
@@chachmcgrach2053 i just kept riding and learned on my own, still stall occasionally but it’s very rare. I did take the msf course

Best video ever everyone I’ve been watching is telling me to rev match and I’m just not that skilled enough yet so we video like this helps me a lot

Really easy as you do it but little difficult as we handle our own new bike I think

how's the new bike? How was the ride home?
Whenever you go from 1st to 2nd gear can u release the clutch quickly after u shift into 2nd
No same rule applies I think if you pop the clutch you’ll stall the bike. So always let go slowly like in a car
Hey will, is the video about down shifting and when to up shift on a city road out yet?
Oh my goodness this video is so helpful to me in the way that process information. Thank you
My motorcycle has abs continental braking system. I always apply rear brake before ever touching the front brake.
I sub because you admitted to dropping your bike when learning. I also did several times lol good times lol
Great video. What if you make an episode of “rookie mistakes”? I dropt mine because my boot slipt on the ground when I stopped to park it.

From first gear half a click to neutral
The question is can you do the same from second to neutral
Second gear then half a click to neutral?

Friction zone then gas but you’ll get to a point where it becomes automatic.

Noobie question. When changing from 1st to 2nd do you just kick it up once (1st to 2nd) or twice (1st to neutral to 2nd)? Thanks.
1 - N - 2
i just need to practise downshifting more so it's not so jerky.
I have the same problem haha. I find letting the clutch out a bit slower helps and rolling off the throttle.
Thanks man!
No problem!
