I realized that I was not in the correct riding position from watching his videos led to my oftentimes poor throttle control. For me, poor riding position led to poor throttle/braking control leading to nerve wracking jerks at the most inopportune time due to my hands pulling naturally downward due to my positioning. Doing slow speed drills has become fun.
Second time ever on a motorcycle and smoothly shifted to 2nd gear for the first time while saying out loud “no gas, pull in the clutch, shift, ease out the clutch, give it gas” 🤗 Thank you for the great video!!

Honestly staying in first if you're in stopping and going or going slow is okay! When you let off the throttle the engine will slow you a little then you just follow this stuff b
I been practicing no gear at all also no plate or licence I'm a new rider as well think I'm just gonna learn on my own tho and save my money already pretty comfortable riding I'm also starting on a 600c gsxr from 2005 bikes 10 years younger than me.
I’m glad you mentioned finding the friction zone by walking the bike and releasing the clutch until you feel it. That’s the way I’ve taught all of my friends how to ride, and it never fails. It also helps people that have no prior experience in manual cars understand that the friction zone is just that.. a zone. It’s not an on off switch.
I’m a new rider and I found this so helpful. My MFS course was basically just “pull in the clutch hit the lever” and didn’t go over how slowly the clutch needs to be let out so I kept jerking when switching. This is so helpful!

Thanks for going so slow with this. Massive help for me because I was just jumping it every time and wasn't letting off the throttle. Was also kind of panicking when I had to slow down from a higher gear and go all the way down to 1st to stop. Getting better at not looking at my hands but still a process.
Update: just went out for my 2nd time on real roads and I no longer have any issue shifting because of your video. Thank you so much! Now if I can just fix the stalling issue at the lights...

That's great. This comment gives me the confidence to try myself. I'm considering doing the same but just renting a Honda XR 150. The rental agency even states they don't care if it gets scratched up! I've been driving PCX/Click etc. and those semi autos for almost two years now.

Im a 15 year old new rider and just bought my first MC, its a ktm duke 125 2016, and i love it. first time going i was clueless on how to drive and switch gear. I thought it would be easy at first just change gear then just drive and then change and drive faster but i was very wrong. Having my full bike course at the end of this month. Riding scooter for a year now, you taught me how to corner about 2 months ago. Before my number 8 was more like a 14, my u-turn was a 3-point turn like in a car.

Agree been driving since I was 11 and I’m 55! Buying a new bike and before I buy a new bike I always find it better to get as much intel to match what I already know and to make sure I’m adding newer tools to my driving arsenal!
Great video! I took my MSF a few days ago. Clutch control and shifting (bad footing) always gave me problems. In ways, I think the students and myself were sort of pushed to learn shifting, throttle, and clutch control quickly. Your video is very helpful, you take your time to explain the friction zone, working the shifter,and on top of that. I'm not worried about downshifting anymore. Thank you so much! Happy riding!

I like that you mentioned not to think about the technology. Feel and sound is how I was taught years ago on a dirt bike, your automatic manual transmission kicks in, the ears are the tachometer indicator of the rpm. It all comes naturally after a long time practicing daily. Keep it on a swivel ✌🏻

100% same. In MSF all they ever do is continuously shout at everyone to put more throttle, more throttle....I genuinely had no clue that I should be off the throttle while shifting

I understand what your saying for those learning not to worry about Rev matching. Though it took me figuring out Rev matching to get any good at quick stops. That Rev match takes a lot of undue pressure off of braking.
@@williamforsythe9180 well you could. Though I've found Rev matching and allowing for some engine braking through the process has helped me come to a quick stop within the flow of traffic not to be confused with an emergency stop
@@williamforsythe9180 Adding to the other comment, it's a fun and useful technique, but not necessary to ride. Most people who drive stick shift cars never learn to rev match, and on a motorcycle, the downside can be dangerous. It's good advice not to bother with it until you're very competent with a bike.

In the MSF class we were told to downshift through each gear to come to a stop... ive been practicing that and getting SO frustrated because i have not fully figured out rev matching yet and my bike would lurch and bog down as im shifting down. Been watching this for a while now. And I practiced on a manual motorcycle for the 1st time a few hours ago. Man the timing is tricky! Still going to practice later after dinner.
The simplest way I'd put it is rev matching makes everything extra smooth. It's good, but also the last thing you want to worry about on your first ride.
Anotherl tip that really helped me. When looking for neutral While moving the lever up push it slightly in towards the engine. Find it everytime now. Just gotta becareful not to do it this way when you want through N to 2nd.
I get stuck in N when going from 1st to 2nd occasionally, so I'll try the opposite of this and make sure I'm not pushing in towards the engine! Thanks for this!
@@Nb-ko5di it didn’t specifically help me, but it turns out it was the height of my shifter. It was too high, so even when my foot was raised as much as I could do it, it wasn’t physically moving the shifter as much as it needed!

I have never driven a bike in my life but am going to go for my license and I was very curious on gear shifting. Your video is super excellent on that. I get that smooth slow shifting. Now I assume when is experienced and can shift fast the order of roll back the throttle, pull in clutch, kick gear with foot, release clutch, add gas. Even though one may do the same sequence much faster the time between each operation is identical but speed up is how I see it.

First bike's a week and a half old, I'm starting actually rev matching and blipping, and it's SO much easier. Also, from 2 to 6 and down again, all clutchless. GSX-S125.
If, the clutch lever is fully out, for it to engage, you should first adjust at the clutch basket (coarse adjustment), then you adjust at the lever (fine adjustment) the lever on the clutch lever is a span adjuster to fit small/large hands. Older bikes can have a right hand gear, change, and some Kawasaki had neutral at bottom and up for first, etc.
I do driving lessons and my instructor never told this and this is much better while shifting. Normal if i shift i let the clutch go if i down shift than i get everytime a shock or something because i was going to fast. I appreciate it

She and I have a much better relationship now 😂. Love that bike so much, shes my daily. I came from riding a dirt bike before got my motorcycle. I have a habit of letting the clutch go pretty quick when up shifting is that bad I haven’t had any issues but I’m teaching myself to release it slower

Great video for new riders! The only thing I do differently is that I do downshift because it’s safer to stay in gear for when traffic starts moving again or if someone behind you isn’t paying attention. Do you have a more advanced video showing how to float gears/clutchless shift with a bike that has a normal clutch? I have one showing me floating gears but I don’t explain how to because it’s not for beginners.
Interesting. My sense is, if I completely dump my throttle before engaging the clutch, my bike is not going to react well. But that's essentially what I do with my manual-transmission car. I'll play around with it and see for sure. I know it's a completely different world when I dump the throttle on my little 250 dirt bike vs. my 1100 street bike. But that's what makes this sport sporty. Thanks for sharing.
Great content! Thank you for the guidance and help. I noticed you sometimes shift into first gear with your heel. Is there a reason as to why you do it that way? Are there any risks in shifting gears too hard with your foot? Can the gearbox get damaged?
I’m a new rider as well and after watching this, I realized I was all jerky because I was letting off the throttle and clutch too quick. Granted most of it came from excitement of riding but seeing it slowed down helped a lot

100% same. In MSF all they ever do is continuously shout at everyone to put more throttle, more throttle....I genuinely had no clue that I should be off the throttle while shifting

I understand what your saying for those learning not to worry about Rev matching.
Though it took me figuring out Rev matching to get any good at quick stops. That Rev match takes a lot of undue pressure off of braking.
For a quick stop wouldn’t you just pull in the clutch and brake to a stop?

Though I've found Rev matching and allowing for some engine braking through the process has helped me come to a quick stop within the flow of traffic not to be confused with an emergency stop
@@williamforsythe9180 Adding to the other comment, it's a fun and useful technique, but not necessary to ride. Most people who drive stick shift cars never learn to rev match, and on a motorcycle, the downside can be dangerous. It's good advice not to bother with it until you're very competent with a bike.

In the MSF class we were told to downshift through each gear to come to a stop... ive been practicing that and getting SO frustrated because i have not fully figured out rev matching yet and my bike would lurch and bog down as im shifting down. This was sooo helpful i cant wait to practice again now lol

Been watching this for a while now. And I practiced on a manual motorcycle for the 1st time a few hours ago. Man the timing is tricky! Still going to practice later after dinner.
The simplest way I'd put it is rev matching makes everything extra smooth. It's good, but also the last thing you want to worry about on your first ride.
Anotherl tip that really helped me.
When looking for neutral
While moving the lever up push it slightly in towards the engine.
Find it everytime now. Just gotta becareful not to do it this way when you want through N to 2nd.
I get stuck in N when going from 1st to 2nd occasionally, so I'll try the opposite of this and make sure I'm not pushing in towards the engine! Thanks for this!

@@Nb-ko5di it didn’t specifically help me, but it turns out it was the height of my shifter. It was too high, so even when my foot was raised as much as I could do it, it wasn’t physically moving the shifter as much as it needed!
Thank youu 🫶🫶 this was perfect! I felt rushed during the MSF course and didn’t fully grasp shifting til the last day. This really helped and reassured me that I don’t need to rush shifting (also the first time I’ve actually understood rev matching even though you only mentioned it for a second lol)

I have never driven a bike in my life but am going to go for my license and I was very curious on gear shifting.
Your video is super excellent on that. I get that smooth slow shifting. Now I assume when is experienced and can shift fast the order of roll back the throttle, pull in clutch, kick gear with foot, release clutch, add gas. Even though one may do the same sequence much faster the time between each operation is identical but speed up is how I see it.
This video helped me a lot I’ve been trying to speed through everything just because I have years of experience with cars this helps a lot

First bike's a week and a half old, I'm starting actually rev matching and blipping, and it's SO much easier. Also, from 2 to 6 and down again, all clutchless. GSX-S125.
This is great! I like the slow and repeatedly explaining the most important clutch handling for a beginner like me.

If, the clutch lever is fully out, for it to engage, you should first adjust at the clutch basket (coarse adjustment), then you adjust at the lever (fine adjustment) the lever on the clutch lever is a span adjuster to fit small/large hands.
Older bikes can have a right hand gear, change, and some Kawasaki had neutral at bottom and up for first, etc.

I do driving lessons and my instructor never told this and this is much better while shifting. Normal if i shift i let the clutch go if i down shift than i get everytime a shock or something because i was going to fast. I appreciate it

Very helpful video. I have just done CBT in UK and gear changes up to now have been very jerky as I do them like in a car.
Gotta say great video man, learned the hard way about hand speed when shifting. Jumped on MT07, and if you aren't slow with controls, that girl wants to wheelie. She and I have a much better relationship now 😂. Love that bike so much, shes my daily. She gets me where i wanna go and in return, i let her wheelie every now and again, controlled environment only, of course. Great video brother, new sub here.

I came from riding a dirt bike before got my motorcycle. I have a habit of letting the clutch go pretty quick when up shifting is that bad I haven’t had any issues but I’m teaching myself to release it slower

Best beginner guide
Great video for new riders! The only thing I do differently is that I do downshift because it’s safer to stay in gear for when traffic starts moving again or if someone behind you isn’t paying attention. Do you have a more advanced video showing how to float gears/clutchless shift with a bike that has a normal clutch? I have one showing me floating gears but I don’t explain how to because it’s not for beginners.

Interesting. My sense is, if I completely dump my throttle before engaging the clutch, my bike is not going to react well. But that's essentially what I do with my manual-transmission car. I'll play around with it and see for sure. I know it's a completely different world when I dump the throttle on my little 250 dirt bike vs. my 1100 street bike. But that's what makes this sport sporty. Thanks for sharing.

Great content! Thank you for the guidance and help. I noticed you sometimes shift into first gear with your heel. Is there a reason as to why you do it that way? Are there any risks in shifting gears too hard with your foot? Can the gearbox get damaged?

I’m a new rider as well and after watching this, I realized I was all jerky because I was letting off the throttle and clutch too quick. Granted most of it came from excitement of riding but seeing it slowed down helped a lot
