So refreshing to see Butch not only playing an electric kit live, but also building kits starting with the stock Roland samples. So many others use electronics sparingly and with all custom samples. As a local gigging drummer who recently started using the VAD-307 as my main kit, this will definitely lend some credibility. Thanks Butch!
Thank you Modern Drummer, for showing that electronic drums can be used for live gigs. Some of the comments here prove what I already know, there is a lot of sceptisism. I think mostly from people that haven't played on current (!) edrums. I have been playing electronic drums for more than 30 years and they have evolved massively (I now play a TD-50X as well). It is just a different instrument, just like a keyboard is different from an acoustic piano.
Butch Vig is the King Midas of the 90s. I can't afford a Roland kit like that, so I took an old Roland TD-6v module and made my own DIY conversion kit with my late 80's Mapex kit. The new Lemon brand of E-cymbals tho? Excellent! Almost as good as the Roland cymbals, but at a fraction of the price!
@morbidmanmusic Oh, I don't know... hardware? Sticks? Throne? Pedals? Ya know...the details 99% of drummers give when they are doing a rig rundown? 🤷♂️
It is a nightmare. If drummers had a rack like premadonna guitarists did.... Can you imagine. "Well this kit is for the opening song. This one I don't really use but it's cool to have a 9 piece of I ever wanna use it.this ones for the downtuned song which we usually play half way through the set."
@@NintenDub I saw a video of Deep Purple playing Fireball in 1970-something. No joke, they had the tech drag on a second bass drum purely for the one song, mic it up and then take it away once the song was over. It was mad to look at.
@@liamfitzdrums well it depends what the use is, what's it for. Don't know deep purple well but it had to be for a reason,? Did they put delay on it to match a studio track? Tuned it different like way high up for an effect? Did the drummer play it, or another band member? 🤨
I thought Butch had the DWe or electric DW kit. I guess that is not ready yet. Garbage have always had an interesting live set up. I will have to check out a show with Butch on that Roland kit.
The DWe kit is relatively new, and the TD50X he plays has been out for a number of years now. In 2022, Roland acquired DW so they can make accustic sets, not just e-kits. Also, since Roland acquired DW, the DWe kit now works with the Roland TD50 module.
@@Iamadrummer great news. I didn't realise that butch vig changed his drum set a few years back. It will interesting to see his future setup. thanks for the reply.
Makes total sense for a producer/musician to do this. I usually dont like this fad of electronic kits with longer realistic wooden shells (I love the futuristic aesthetic of pad e kits like the EMerge or the DTXs), but he seems to be the kind of guy well aware of the logistic benefits.
Would be cool to get some info on how to make “Butch Vig Drums” in Komplete to play well on a Roland TD Kit. I have a td-27 and I love the butch gig library, I use it all the time but can’t seem to get it playable on the TD To a degree that feels ok enough to get a performance.
Love butch’s sensibilities but man I can’t believe he’s using the machine gun Roland triggering and some sounds. And I own a kit…. I’m triggering superior drummer 3 with mine but I do get it for this exact music since it’s mostly drum machine feeling and sounding stuff
This is great thank you! I've used an old (circa 2000) TD-6 live and in rehearsals, and a similar era TD-12 which was awesome. My question is, to you have a replacement for everything in this kit, in the wings? Similarly to how a tech would help swap out a blown snare, do you have a backup SD card, kit brain, etc etc.? Thank you!
It's online so people just have to be negative without thinking. Shocking. So many people complaining about price and the influence this will have to make people play electronic drums. How much do you think the kits name player use cost??? This kit is probably a LOT cheaper. Just check out Danny Carey's brass snare. I didn't see anyone complaining about an $8000 snare drum on that video. Also, who cares if someone learns to play on an electric kit? It's another drummer in the world. Who cares what they play? I've toured with both acoustic and electronic and both work really well. A lot of those "acoustic" drummers you hear live are triggering sounds along with their acoustic set anyway. because it is easier to get a great sound that way. At the end of the day, that's what it is about.
Just came back from the concert in Wiesbaden. Never heard a live act where the drum track is so processed - exactly like the album sounds. That's the positive thing. IMO the live performance must not sound exactly alike. The ringing of the cymbals still lacking MOJO for rock music. Even on the top end Roland kit.
Take it easy, man. We're playing music. Drums are the tool, electronic or acoustic. Butch Vig has been doing the e-kit thing for a while and it works for everyone in his band, crew, and the audiences they play for. It's always about music.

Very cool to see an electronic kit as the main kit in a live setting! Butch is a legend!
A far cry from the full rack of gear they had on stage 20+ years ago. Crazy!
A real music legend.
Butch worked on some influential albums aside from his work with Garbage.

Butch Vig, Jesus loves you man! You are his beloved creation!
Don't be a god pusher".. maybe he is an atheist. You are so insulting.
Legend! Love all his work with Garbage!
🔥LEGEND🔥 so band sounding oriented than just playing drums.
Gnarly Kit🔥🔥🥁
Legend!!! what a genius
I was hoping for a kit rundown. I got a 15 minute Roland commercial.
Well, that is his rig. So what did you expect?
@morbidmanmusic Oh, I don't know... hardware? Sticks? Throne? Pedals? Ya know...the details 99% of drummers give when they are doing a rig rundown? 🤷♂️
To each their own…. A legend in this case.
Great rig; enjoyed the tom setup.
As a drummer, I'm a proponent of "ALL the sounds," but bringing a ton of different kicks and snares on tour sounds like a nightmare 😂
Not if you play a good e-kit.
It is a nightmare. If drummers had a rack like premadonna guitarists did....
Can you imagine.

Steve Jordan uses around 10+ snares and two kits (sometimes three) on tour.

Sweet kit-it probably sounds soo good direct to the PA. At some point I'm going to upgrade to digital hats/snare. 🤘 thanks for edrums rundown

Love Garbage
That new 2pc Roland hi-hat is indeed awesome, but beware the price tag if you're buying it a la carte...!

@williamperri3437even the TD-17 has anti-machine gun engine.
Great to see an electronic kit on the series „Tour Kit roundown“ but tbh, this was to me a little bit too much a kind of „Roland commercial“ 🥴🤷🏻♂️

Butch should check out the DWe
Playing with the e-cymbals too? No way. I guess it makes sense for Garbage’s style of music though.

Anybody know what the small box with push it written on is ?
It’s just a midi program changer
What is the little box he’s using to change presets?
Thats what i wanna know aswell lol
It's called a LioBox
@@VGMDrummer thanks!
What is the "little box" MIDI setting controller?
Program changer
It's called a Liobox.
I read somewhere that he used to fill his toms with water for his acoustic drumkit, is it true?
At 4.15 ish…what latest update? What new sounds? I have 50x firmware 1.0. Roland notes for firmware 1.10 (January 2024) says nothing about new sounds.
This video was shot in 2023
Awesome. Without Butch, Nirvana would have sounded like Garbage :)
HA! Ok, that was a good one.

What drumsticks does he use?
Supporting Noel Gallagher?
I'd still have some real cymbals along with the electronic ones.
Cool dude, not a cool kit. But, I do get his point about cymbal bleed.
why not
@@dyl_outbecause it just isn’t.
It definitely sounds like an e-kit. 😶
Much respect for Butch however I really prefer actual acoustic drums.
E-drums are one thing, but doing away with real cymbals, because they interfere with your singers singing in the live mix is CRAZY.
electronic drums are garbage
Did Butch have a stroke. Like his mouth is sideways.
Not enough minerals
Electronic drums?Naaah...
For me , is no sense, to use à electro Drum kit on live
Who cares what you think about it. When you get a rig review you can tell us all how cool your kit isn't.
Stock Roland . Naaa Hard pass
like watching a kid playing at guitar center
Not very rock n roll. This is all about selling products, and not about great music.
Yeah Nahh...give me real drums bro!
No no Good God No!
" Oh thank you modern drummer for showing us such a "... shut up and play real drums this is nonesense .Acoustic drums are not a problem ever
Plastic shit is not drumset
