  • Vivek Ramaswamy Wants to Abolish H-1B Visas. Here's why | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has promised to abolish the H-1B visa programme if elected President.
The H-1B visas are used by tens of thousands of Indians who work for US companies on a temporary basis. Ramaswamy's company has used the H-1B visa programme 29 times between 2018 and 2023.
Palki Sharma decodes Vivek Ramaswamy's outlandish claims.

What's wrong with jobs going to American Citizen and Workers versus foreigners? It is INDENTURE SERVERTITUDE. Just like the British and colonials did in the 19th century when slavery was abolished. They brought the 'coolies' from India to work the sugar plantations in the West Indies (caribbean)

As a US educated skilled Indian working in US , who didn’t get a H1B through lottery and had to return back to india (no regrets returning back) , I can tell you Vivek is 100% right about the lottery system. A guy who has no skills working for a basic consultancy gets a H1B after filing multiple applications while a U.S. grad working for a big product company in a skilled role doesn’t. Why? Because I legally had 1 application in the pool while some random unskilled guy had 15 thereby increasing his chances. This lottery system needs to go. Kudos to Vivek for taking this up and I am sorry but palki is wrong on this one.

As an Indian working in the US, I would say First post has got it completely wrong this time. The existing lottery system is awful because it keeps people (Indians) in uncertainty for years. People should get a yes/no decisions straightway. In that way, even if people are denied a visa, they can start planning for their future accordingly.

As an Indian American who went through the schooling system here, lived here for 23 years and worked for an IT company (Cognizant), I've seen first hand how these companies body-shop people and bring them here to the US and shack them up at crummy apartments - all for driving costs of their business down. We as US have our issues we need to work on, most important of which is to make our STEM education robust and create more job opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths for locals here so we can compete internationally. Of course where skills fall short, i'm all for bringing international talent, but there has to be a balance. Maybe abolishing is an extreme, but it definitely needs to be curbed. And i'm sure if it were the other way and another country was dealing with this issue, their local government would take the same stance. Good on Vivek for having a spine and standing for what he believes in.

Secondly if you look at overall GC Visa cap which is allocated by country, Indians have the worst chance of getting GC. For eg an applicant from low application country may get GC within a year whereas for Indians with H1 it can take decades, hence the country cap needs to be removed to benefit the people who are actually contributing more and paying taxes. If Viveks company wasn't using the H1B card some other company would and benefit from it and his company would be at a disadvantage competition wise. Brexit was also won in the UK because pro-Brexiters promised to adopt it. I believe people in India would celebrate the same way if Trump becomes the president. Basically, it is not because VR is an Indian origin or something like that... It is mainly the policies he/she brings to the table that will benefit India.
For Ex: Trump stopped aid to Pakistan, took down the monopoly of China through trade wars, enhanced relations with India, deplored NATO , thawed relations with Russia...etc.
Biden's policies were different which really was not a benefit to India....
Hence the celebration of bright hope or potential goodwill, if Trump or VR becomes the president. Also, not many Indians celebrated when Kamala Harris became VP.....

Vivek is the most prepared, most intelligent orator I have seen amongst the politicians. He is also pretty close to being authentic, although there are some areas where he is not 100% genuine(like supporting Trump or his views with fossil fuels and some other), but then no one is perfect. Unlike many other American Indian politicians, he is also not anti India, and he embraces his ethnicity and religious views openly just like Sunak does. Regarding H1B, his position is perfectly moral and justified, some Indian software engineers may feel betrayed(I know I am an ex software engineer), but if it's truly merit based, Indians will still get the lion's share for sure. Regarding that Investments in fossil fuels, well, at the worst it can be called "vested interest" and not bought out, because he himself chose to invest, instead of the other way round. Also, it's impossible to invest in ANY fund even for a layman without having some portion in fossil fuel industry( I know, I tried, but even ESG funds have them) so you can imagine about a Billionaire. Regarding the "Digital Fentanyl", do i really need to explain? It's addictive for uninitiated people and teenagers, who have no idea how it works, and what it does to their brain...Do you reall think Vivek will use it for cheap thrills? He joined it to connect to the youth audience that's all, if even a small percentage of youth watch Vivek's speech(which everyone of them is a lesson in itself, and you certainly would expand your mind by watching) instead of wasting their time on some badlly curated dance, that's a win. Palki I like your style of journalism, but please don't judge this man on shallow grounds, you may or may not agree with all his points(I don't), but he certainly is robust and substancial and very close to being truthful and authentic. But, you need to watch at least a dozen videos of his to understand that. All his "Tall claims" look outrageous if you just pick the words like you did here, but if you listen to the rationale behind them, you will find out they make sense... For example, by "Demolish FBI" he means, FBI is a redundant agency(as they have at least 3-4 agencies which do the same thing), so he wants to abolish it, regroup 75% of the personnel into the existing agencies and lay of the fat which is 25%. It doesn't sound outrageous anymore, does it?

    Migration is of two types:
    (1) Legal migration: This is the migration of students, skilled workers, unskilled workers and business persons with the consent and permission of the countries. Most of these migrations are from 'developing countries' to 'advanced countries'. The people of 'developing countries' migrate to 'advanced countries' for better economic, business and employment opportunities and for a better standard of living.
(2)Illegal migration: In this case, people migrate from insecure and unsafe lands for the purpose of survival.
    Legal Migration:
Why do people from different countries want to go and settle down in the US? Why don't they transform their countries into the US through development and reforms?
    Illegal Migration:
Generally, people migrate from one place to another when the political, economic, educational, safety and security conditions deteriorate in the places where they live. Sometimes people migrate because of persecution.
