Reduced Vertical Separation Minima RVSM explained - [Difference between rvsm and non rvsm airspace]

  • RVSM stands for Reduced Vertical Separation Minima.
The main advantage of an RVSM airspace is the possibility to maintain a vertical separation of 1000 feet between two aircraft that are flying in opposite directions.
The RVSM Airspace starts from FL 290 and ends at FL 410 included.
In a non-rvsm Airspace, the aircraft have to maintain 2000 feet vertical separation minimum when flying below FL290 and above FL410.
This was so because the Altimeters, at high altitudes, are not very reliable.
However, with the introduction of the RVSM, the aircraft minimum separation, above FL290 and below FL 410, has been reduced to 1000 feet.
In order to fly within an RVSM airspace, the Aircraft and the Pilots need to be certified.
Depending on the technical problem that an aircraft may have, it could lose the RVSM capability.
If, for any reason, the Pilot is not RVSM compliant he/she needs to inform the Air Traffic Controller immediately and descend or climb out of the RVSM airspace.
The implementation of such Airspace increased by double the amount of Flight Levels available for Commercial Aircrafts.
RVSM has improved the efficiency and the punctuality of the commercial air operation a lot.
The Pilots are able to fly closer to their Optimum Flight Level also, the delay has been reduced a lot because the capacity of the airspace has improved substantially.

Hi Kimo! Thanks for your video. Flying with Emirates for 14 years to many different countries and airspaces, this is the first time I hear/see north-south semi circles for this purpose. Probably I have been doing something wrong. Can you tell us which countries use N-S instead of E-W? Your info could be valuable. Regards, Alfonso.

Hey Alfonso, it is nice to see a comment from a colleague!! Many thanks for watching!! The world default semicircular separation is east-west however, some countries (where the airways are generally north-south oriented) like Italy, Portugal, and more use the north-south separation. I hope I answered your question and I wish you a great day!

Thanks for the video but as far as i know the seperation is east and west for the odd and even numbers. Could you kindly explain why did you mention the seperation like north and south. did i miss anything?

You are very welcome!!! You are not missing anything!! It depends on the region you are flying.. some regions use north south and some West east..

Could you please explain why the RVSM airspace is restricted to FL410 and not more

Many thanks for watching and the comment!! Above FL410 the altimeter becomes less accurate thus is better to increase the separation to 2000feet. I wish you a great day!

Hi! I have a question - If in your example an aircraft flying at FL350 encounters a problem, and it has to descend to FL280, wouldn't it be the other hemisphere since the direction of FL350 and FL280 are the opposite? Thank you for your answer!

    • @PILOTCLIMB
      @PILOTCLIMB  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes that's right, always remember that the ATC will help you with the separation with other aircraft..
