  • Twist the screw, raise the water. Water screw at Conkers in the heart of the national forest. These screws have been used to pump water for 2300 years.

Looks like quite a bit of water coming out of the top end. How would we go about getting this water into a pipe that is is not rotating? Does the Archimedes screw approach develop pressure in the pipe? Does the angle of the screw (about 45 degrees) make a difference - thanks for the video.

Dave Bean maybe a big funnel would catch the outpouring at the top?
I think the screw just traps water in the bottom part of the pipe, and the water continues to stay at the lower half of the pipe section it is in.
Dang, it’s hard to put into words!
The water isn’t under pressure. It’s as if the force on the handle is allowing you to pour water from one container (section of tube) into another container (section of tube) that is just slightly higher up.
I read that 30 degrees is good.

At the top where the water comes out, make a bend on the tube and connect it to the central tube with a T. Now the water is in the central tube and can be voveyed to the top bearing.

In a Archimedes screw the water is at any time trapped in a banana formed “container”. You can stop the screw for som time and, but for leakage, all water will stay put. If you use a closed tube some of the same will happen, but also an air pressure will build up inside the tube. A spiral pump can lift to a fair head.

this makes me wonder if it is possible to make a simple Archimedes screw out of bike tire tubes ?

You may use a bicycle wheel and a plastic tubing fixed as a spiral. Look up spral pump.

Maybe lose the extraordinarily obnoxious sounds and replace with something less like nails on a chalkboard. Just a thought.

That makes it more sensual I thought
