- In this video I build a simple, cheap siphon system to lower the water level in our pond. This type of system could be used for numerous projects where you need to move water. Farming, Gardens, Ponds, Swimming Pools

Siphons certainly work. Here in United Kingdom the city of Birmingham draws water from reservoirs in mid-Wales, a distance of about 100 miles. Gravity fed up hill and down valleys and no pumps!
One thing to do different Mike, On your discharge end, use a PVC ball valve that you can open and shut. That way, you never have to prime your system after you first primed it as you did.The only downfall in your area is that of freezing which would possibly freeze your valve shut. I use this same method to drain swimming pools.

Em, need some gravity therapy not great with this,
However hears my issue,
I run a hybanker sluice flourgold prospecting,,so i want to run my sluce continouse like say 24/7
Now i have an inlet connection 1/2 inch feed into the rear of the sluice, now i know the system will work drawing water into the sluice,
Can i add a shut of valve on the neck before the sluice thus can i use that shut off valve/tap as a controller controlling the water in,
Further i don't know if its possible gravity fed that is if i could recirculate the water from a contanor back to a contanor the object is to get away from battery's,bilg pumps and physically carrying pails of water,
I do a lot of beach sluicing also,,so mikes syhpin system is great could i therefore say draw water from a creek,river lake even the sea as a potential water source to feed my system,,
Okay mikes Is a two I inch system so i would have to scale down help please your answers are highly valuied.

Thank you. We set up your siphon system and it worked like a charm. Amazing how much water a 2 in pipe can move. We were able to lower our pond enough overnight that the emergency spillway quit flowing. A tip: the check valve is actually a sump pump check valve.
Easy way to start a vacuum......I like the way you did this. The word vacuum is a big deal in the plumbing world. I'm a plumber 46 years and going. The main reason we have vents in out plumbing system is to stop negative and positive pressures...Keep the video's coming.

Cool video mike for those that didn't know how to run a siphon pipe line. I have two at the farm one in the well & one at that dams. Run black pvc pipe a foot valve in the water source then a gate valve a couple of meters or feet down from the stand pipe so you don't have to fill the whole pipeline, fill to the stand pipe seal open the gate valve & of course let gravity do the rest.
Sounds interesting, but I have no idea what you are talking about. I'm new to farming and have a problem with beavers flooding my land. I would like to use this system. Can you make a video and link me. I would live to learn how to make this.
It works great. we did this with 6 inch pipe about 20 years ago when we had to drain 4 ponds
Thanks! Finally a clear concise video on moving water down not up. I have a 2 season irrigation creek cutting across my property along a hill and I will be diverting some water from it for a pond (eventually) - mountainous area (Rockies). Just wanted to express my appreciation!
As long as you let water out lower level than the inlet pipe then it will work even the pipe goes up b4 going down...then from the outlet with that pressure you csn put ram pump to travel the water uphill...

Wow so simple. I will try this since my property is near the river and watering plants will be simple and easy. So I can add a Ram Pump to lift the water to my storage tank. Cool and simple and cheap!

Good simple syphon. If you use Fernco connectors between each length of pipe it can be broken apart and re-assembled easily.
Brilliant, I have a hole in dam wall and was going to hire a pump to drain water but this is gold. Plus you keep pipes for future draining if needed. Thanks for showing.
Great Video. I needed this four years ago. I built one with a 4 inch pipe. Moves lots of water cheaply.
If your out flow pipe is long and way below the inlet, you may skip the check valve if you fill the outlet end with a hose

Great video and the check valve idea on the inlet is much better than the ball valve I have used. I also used a ball valve at the outlet so I could throttle the flow or shut it off completely without the need to reprime the siphon. One thing to note: Not only must the inlet be higher than the outlet, the total rise over the dam cannot be more than 32 feet (at sea level - 27 feet at my altitude).

Great way to charge the system. Check valve and tee. One draw back if freezing temps are coming: section from tee to check valve still has water in it when you shut it down and will freeze. You could use suction hose, with check valve on end - from elbow on inlet side of tee - have rope on end kf suction hose, drag hose up the bank and drain out the last piece.

I’m so glad I found your channel. I searched for videos on gravel driveways and found your videos. I’ve begun to watch all of your videos and so far every one I’ve seen I can benefit from!
I have a place where I used to have a pond. It got so bad down there and started to cause a host of problems that we had to drain it. However we found that the pond side is lower than the existing grade opposite the dam. But if I go about 20’ past the dam it drops of. It stays so wet I can’t get my equipment in to properly fix the drainage and I couldn’t afford a pump plus there’s no electricity.
I can now take this knowledge and get that mess dried out.

Thanks for the video. I was trying to pump down the pond due to damage to the dam from muskrats. I was using a pump and all was well, but the pump quit during this latest rain to hit western KY. I couldn't get a replacement pump and decided to use your idea. We ended up getting about 10" of rain and the siphon kept the water below the damaged area of the dam. It worked great. Thanks again.
