I was so happy to finally beat the final bosses without dying and restarting at stage 6-1 I just had to record me doing it!
Note about 2nd form: I lost my patience while recording and this is VERY sloppy. Has an epic finish at least? Watch another video for a smoother run here.
As a kid I never got past the 2nd form. When I played the game again on PC, I nerd raged when I had to keep starting back at 6-1, so I saved a state before the boss to let me keep trying without having to go back through the hell of stage 6 again and again! I finally got around to beating all 3 of the phases without any save states and here it is! - เกม

Anybody who has managed to beat this game, deserves a pat on the back for sure. Still can't believe I beat NG myself 5 years later, considering that the game throws you back to 6-1 everytime you die. What a dirty trick!
I beat this, but on the NES Classic that allowed save states. I didn’t do any save scumming, but being able to retry a boss after I died without going back to the first level of that world was a godsend. And it STILL took me about four days of constant attempts to get it.
@@angryretailbanker5103 nothing wrong with using save states during bosses on games likes this. Artificial difficulty isn't real difficulty all. It was made extremely "difficult" on purpose because they didn't want you beating this in day or in weekend back when it came out. Arcade games were made with the exact same mindset. Maximum profit.

From what I've heard, the respawn back to 6-1 was a coding error, but the devs left it in to increase difficulty.

The only thing that made this game difficult was the cheap instant respawns of the enemies. Especially the birds.
I am now an expert at this game and I retract this comment. Ninja Gaiden is an easy game.
well of course it's easy for you, you're an expert lol.
But besides, the birds were the most retarded thing in ninja gaiden. Bullets and machine gun bullets do one health point each, but BIRDS DO THREE. That doesn't even make any sense. Why would a bird flying into you hurt more than an actual bullet shot out of a machine gun?? It just felt like the developers were trying to make the game harder than it actually is, since the birds have a worse pattern than bullets.
In my opinion,the guy who can fuck himself the most is the white dude who throws some kind of an axe that always comes back to him! As well as those green rugby players!

Some tips on getting to the final boss to give yourself a chance: Do not run into the boss fight if you have very little health left and an extra life to spare. You spawn at the last staircase if you die before the boss fight,but back to 6-1 if you lose. Take a dive and restart the final screen to get more health. Get as many powerups as possible,you can nuke the boss with the last item available before the fight starts.You only need to kill one form of the boss at a time,so it is not as bad as it seems. The second of 3 forms is a bitch though,that's the truly hard part.
Took me 4 straight hours of playing this level over and over as a kid to finally beat it. Still my proudest gaming achievement.

I just watched the Nerd's review; his version seems to be harder. With his, the second boss's fireballs don't just leave the screen when they miss, they come back for a second pass. Here, they track you, but once they're off the screen, most of them don't come back.
If I can finish it's beyond possible.
The second form is impossible! I only played it on an emulator, hats off to whoever beat this legit.
I can't even beat it on the switch using the rewind/save state feature. though after watching this video, I'm gonna try out this method.

I beat this game when i was y ounger, but i think i went through about 3 controllers on this boss.
i finally beat all 3 forms of the final boss and completed my love for Ninja Gaiden. I wish Tecmo would bring back the nes series and give us Ninja Gaiden 4 in 8 bit just like mega man 9 and 10

AVGN was not kidding on how brutal that second boss is. But you made the 3rd boss look really easy, however I am under the impression where those projectiles land is more unpredictable so you're just that good.

Still the most ragequit-inducing video game I've ever played. The final levels are crazy difficult and require a great deal of patience.

Yeah this game is so fucking hard and ridiculous as a kid I used have friends over to play it and laugh at them when the anger and frustration kicks in ! I cant even imagine how long it took this gut to learn the patterns of the 2nd final boss
The 2nd form was nearly impossible for me to beat, LOL!
But the 3rd form was so easy!! XD
There is an easier way. Dodge the first fireballs by going to the right, then come back to the left wall and jump/climb to get as high on wall as possible. Then when the boss comes back left, jump on him and it will reflect you back so that you will be standing on top of the wall. Start jumping. Because that will make his fireballs go up off the screen! When he gets near you, slash him once or twice and immediately start jumping again.

@@jesserose7487 Congratulations! But you will not be a true Ninja until you can complete the game from the beginning not using save states.
I didn't know about the trick to getting many sword slashes when I worked my way through this game, so you might research that. There are videos explaining it on youtube if you don't know it yet.
To get good at the 3rd boss: that multi-slash trick and just repeated practice so you are good at dodging those things it throws at you.

Playing this through legit on an NES. I had finally rejoiced that I got through 6-2 and 6-3. Got to the boss, died, thought it wouldn't be such a big deal since I'd start at 6-3 anyway. Started at 6-1... what the... why.. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?!

I'm 42 and remember spending hours upon hours to finally beat this game. Thank goodness for the creator allowing you to start at the level you died at throughout most of the game (minus the end, level 6-2), otherwise I'd would have quit early on. I had no cheats, no internet, just video game and will amd bragging rights. This game was and is hard as shit! I beat several times though.
You can't "not mind" beating 6-2. 6-2 is a nightmare. This is one of those games that beat me as a kid. I got to the second form a few times but never beat it, not even with game genie. Well done detached9.

The whole game's difficulty is so exaggerated. The hardest thing is that training the pattern for the second form takes patience because you always have to replay the last level as a whole when you die.

lmao, the entire time on the final boss, I never knew you could destroy the tail. I just destroyed the head and I had barely enough room to hit the center while dodging the tail swings.

I really felt AVGN's frustration against those final bosses because of one fatal coding error. You die in any of them, you respawn back to 6-1. That's considered bullshit by today's standards that it made the whole game outdated by Cyber Shadow. When Quarter Guy upload his Top 10 Bad Bosses in Good Games video next month, he won't hesitate to put those terrible final bosses in the Top 3 & will express his extreme frustrations for how poorly designed that 6-1 respawn error code really is. We rather fight Progenitor over Jaquio.
I went back to 6-1 like five times,tried again the next day,the same bullshit,i was mad as hell....until i found out about the jump and slash power up,i went through the whole level with ease and killed the motherfucking second form with one hit!!!the last form is easy as fuck so yeah,i wish i could beat this "legit"without dying once against the final boss,but fuck it,ive had enough of birds,zombies,jumping skeletons and shit coming from all directions,maybe one day ill do it,for now im just happy to say i beat this fucker up.
I beat this game as a kid 30 years ago. Now Ghosts 'N Goblins... THAT was the one game I couldn't beat as a kid. Did it without save states, both loops, in 2022. Took 33 years.
I beat this the other day on Switch. Coming from FS games I didn't think the first and third forms were that hard, it's just it's second form requires an ungodly amount of patience which opens you up to making dumb mistakes the more your anxiety goes up and you question yourself on the patterns.
I feel the same way. My theory is that the games of our childhood acts as our training wheels, which now means we have the routine with gaming and thus it's easier for us to learn new games.

This is the kind of game that separate casuals to someone who's really willing to invest their time on a video game. I find it's pathetic when people say dark soul is the hardest game ever. Definitely haven't experience the unforgiving nintendo games like this one.
Challenging =/= cheap. This is one of the greatest side scrollers ever.

I played the game today on my Famicom (lost against the second form of the final boss), and there was a refill of energy the first time I faced him. Not the second time (when you have to restart the entire level)
One of the hardest games I've ever beaten although I can't imagine the difficulty of ghost's and goblins

Wow - second boss - down to the wire!!!
From what I remember, it didn't. But, just as you see on this video, some already fired fireballs could keep tracking you for a while even though Jaquio throws new ones.
Here's my strategy: grab the jump&slash in 6-3 and hold onto it for the entire stage, and insta-kill the first form with it. For the second form, go slow and don't panic. Get on the floor as soon as the fireballs come at you, and they're easily dodgable. Take your time and land single blows while keeping up that pattern. If you HAVE to take a hit, let it be from the fireballs, since they only do one unit of damage versus touching the boss. The third form is easy: you can tank a hit from the head after it pops to the ground. After you kill the tail, just wale on it.
I know, the most recent difficult game I played that was difficult by default (no difficulty switches), was The Legend of Spyro The Eternal night and that was released in 2007.
Always blows my mind that this is an NES game. If I didn't know better I'd think it was a very early SNES game

Perhaps it's the technology or our ability to make longer games, so they didn't have to be extremely difficult to feel long, or maybe the 80's and 90's were just to find a balance (one they still haven't found)
using save states removes part of the real experience, the difficulty comes from going back, and if you beat it without having to go back all the time. Then you haven't been playing on the real difficulty the game was designed to have. However unfair that dificulty may seem. And that is what makes beating this game legendary.
Just played this a couple mins ago. Yeah you do get a full life bar for each stage of the boss.
Why everyone is talking about three different forms? actually they are three different characters /bosses 1st: Ken Hayabusa, 2nd : Jaquio, 3rd: The released Demon of the statues. Great video !
I cried when I beat this game. There was a secret that I discovered when facing the 2nd form On the right wall there is a gab. climb into it and nuke the 2nd form down. The 3rd final boss was no problem I cried because Not just I beat it but I was ashamed that I didn't beat on the NES but a emulator I was wo9ndering was I a true gamer after pulling that move
i barely beat the first boss and the 2nd one i'm still stuck on him and he's really tough mostly because he shoots those dang rockets.i almost had him once.i found a glitch on the 2nd part 2 get stuck up at top when he shoots the rockets at you make those glitch you up top were you barely see the whol(please note that this might only work on the nintendo eshop version.and congrats on beating them

just gotta be patient and alert. it can be tough to predict where those fireballs are gonna land, so you very likely will still get hit a few times. do your best to move out of their path or get between them if they are spread out enough. even when you do get hit (it's gonna happen), you need to regain your composure and stick with the plan. good luck!
I have beaten this game on Nes Mini just today. I am not proud as I have used the save states quite often.
I heard that there is one life bar for all 3 bosses, here after every boss life bar is regenerated, where is the truth?
This is the hardest boss of any game I've ever played. I can't beat the second form. I can't even put a single hit in. I don't understand how to damage it. I see what you're doing but when I try it doesn't work. I don't know if I am to close or faraway but what ever it is my attacks never register.
i just finished this game for the first time since i was 12 years old. I had to record myself beating it just to prove ive finished this game. It's not perfect but i could care less. This game used to tick me off so bad, with the respawning birds and other crap knocking you off cliffs.

it shoots 2 fireballs, but if you jump, more fireballs stay on the screen.
0:30 Jaquio uses such a simplistic AI; yet is one of the most obnoxious bosses I've ever dealt with in a platformer game. Thankfully if you lose to him the first time you can return with the jump-n-slash power-up and one shot him.
i use nestopia. if you're using that program, go to file and just select save state.

how do i use powerups? like the shuriken? ive tried every button but i think it may be a combination, i cant kill the boss with no shurikens
hey dude there is actually an easy way but u have to die to do it so if u do ie dont frett, just make sure u have the fire magic when u fight him next and make sure u have over at least forty or so, just chill out in the corner and shoot at him when he s on the opposite side, also the flames u shoot will destroy his flames as well so less running, ill prolly make a quick walkthrough on it or sumthing:)
I finally managed to beat this game... On the 3DS making use of save states so I don't have to repeat anything. It was still hard!

You only get HP refill on the bosses once. When I got sent back to 6-1, and worked my way back to the final bosses again, somehow I started on the second boss first, and I didn't get a HP refill - I had 3 HP.
In short - you have to beat the final bosses on the first try. If you fail, restart the game.
Not really... You just gotta get good at the last level. There's a health refill and everything, and lots of power-ups. If you die to the second boss the first time (I usually do, because the cutscenes take away your magic), just push through 6-1 and 6-2 again and grab all the magic you can before the boss fight. He's not too bad if you nuke him with fire to get half his health down. Definitely not worth restarting the entire game though.
El mejor poder para eliminar al primer boss, es el giro de spin con la espada, si logras llegar con ella en un sólo giro acabas con el enemigo. ¿Lo malo? Que te toca pelear las otras 2 batallas sin poder especial, a pura espada y sin amigos. 😅😂🤣
Today I finished the game in a Pc emulator... using save states... and even then it was hard as hell. I remember I managed to get to the Jaquio 25 years ago... but couldn't defeat the bastard back then.
It took me 7days to beat this game and i gotta say, it was 7 days in hell.
I finally beat this a few weeks ago. Only took me like, 12 fucking years. Took me forever to figure out the second form. And I still beat it with 1 unit of health. Been wanting to get started on the second one but this game burned me out of side scrollers for a while.

I no longer own an NES, so this was played through an emulator. The video recording was done in 1 shot without any save states used throughout the recording. There is no cheating. If there was, you would have seen a much cleaner fight.
When I owned the game on NES I never beat the 2nd form of Jaquio. Then again, I was only like 8 years old then.
