    This is the closest anyone has come so far to properly describing the look controls and dead zones. There’s just *one* point you missed. Axial Deadzone. Imagine a + sign that goes all the way across your stick. The higher you make axial deadzone, the *fatter* that + sign gets. The main use for it, in my experience, is to mitigate that feeling of not being able to look left or right quickly without accidentally drifting up or down. Turning this up lets you pull full fast turns while keeping your vertical aim perfectly the same. It does the same when aiming higher or lower without accidentally drifting left or right off your target. Turning it too high still has the same drawbacks as center deadzone being too high.
    I’m kind of a psycho with controller settings knowledge and it’s been driving me NUTS to see *SO MANY* misinforming videos all over TH-cam and Reddit. So I thank you sincerely for making this video, just for my own OCD. 🤣

  • @travisboatner

    Axial is for trying to aim directly up and down or left and right. So you could aim at 80° but it input as 90°. Imagine a plus sign drawn on the thin stick from top down. Normal is the “plus sign” being drawn with a me handicap pencil, but changing the deadzone is like drawing that plus sign with a sharpie. You can be slightly off from perfectly left/right or up/down but it will move as if it were PERFECTLY left/right up/down.
    Edit: not that it’s something you necessarily want to change but these settings are for your “average” controller. If your controller is older and lower quality or newer and higher quality you may have to change it. 0 deadzone would be for the perfect controller. But some deadzone can make an average controller preform like a good one. So deadzone are controller dependent and too many people don’t want to take time to adjust.

    Hey Shyway, I also want to point out a downside to a high max input threshold. You get to the accel zone faster and it could trigger when trying to aim on a target if you peg the stick frequently. So I think it's actually more consistent to have this setting as low as possible so that you don't unintentionally cross into the acceleration zone, causing your aim to be erratic.

    • @KindOldRaven
      @KindOldRaven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Correct. Which is why having a super high input threshold for movement is handy (faster strafing) but trying out low to minimum values for aiming is more precise. It can all work, but if you feel like your aim is ''jerk-y'' you should lower the input threshold setting drastically. I'm reading about people complaining breaking free of their aim assist bubble and stuff - and they're using max input threshold 15.... yeah... I mean, duh!

    • @jackcolson4745
      @jackcolson4745 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@KindOldRaven
      Yeah I have max input at 0 for look deadzones. My center deadzone for aiming is 10, and axial is 0.
      My current sens is 4 accel, 6 horizontal, 6.5 vertical, and fov is 100.

      So what helps you have steady aim but also be able to comfortably 180 and turn around and navigate the map something like 5 look accel? Or 4? I assume the look accel is what controls whether or not you turn fast to get out of bad situations. But man up close gunfights it makes you whiff shots up and down the screen lol I feel like raising look threshold would only make that worse so maybe low accel and higher threshold is better but even that your turns feel slow and shots still go everywhere

    • @AvengingEnder
      @AvengingEnder 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Aphletic
      @Aphletic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I like to think of axial DZ as the shape of a cross that gets thicker the more you increase it. As you mentioned, it is nice to have a little to keep the left/right and up/down movements without slightly drifting off line if you’re not exactly in line.

    I have used bumper jumper forever and sold my son on it years ago, but not with Halo Infinite. We're using the default layout with paddle controllers, crouch/jump on left paddles, swap weapon/reload on right paddles, then we swapped right stick click and RB in mapping. (Right stick click becomes armor ability and RB becomes melee) It works well enough for us, I like seeing what everyone else is doing though with so much customization in the settings. Awesome video man, going to play it for my son in the morning!

    Shyway, one other considering for Axial is this (from my experimenting): Using your natural thumb movement for left to right and up to down - if your reticle does not make a straight line then you may want to increase it further than just not having drift. Some people's straight line movement with the thumb and joystick is a bit erratic and may represent the reticle actually doing a waving motion from left to right or up to down and vice versa. Hope that makes sense.

    I have crouch on left trigger, jump on left bumper and sprint on left stick. This gives me all of my movement on my left hand without taking my thumb off the right stick.
    I moved Grenade to Y, Equipment to B, Reload to A and Swap to X. ADS is right stick.
    Funilly enough, hitting a drop slide feels like L canceling in Super Smash Bros Melee

    Hey Shyway. First of all, love your videos! The analytical breakdowns are great. I think the subtle difference in center deadzone and axial deadzone is that the axial deadzone is applied across the entire x and y axis. Think about pushing the thumbstick to the rim straight up. It is the distance you move left or right radially before an input is registered. The other way to look at it is if you push up on a diagonal and move back to straight up. It is the point where the input snaps to the x axis. Hope this helps! Keep up the good work!

    Man your deadzone explanation was super helpful. I got told to bump mine down to zero and found I was wandering around so much, thought my controller or the game was bugged.

    Watched the whole vid, even though I already felt prettt knowledgeable on the subject. Still came away learning I could hold on jump to clamber, learned the benefits of bigger text, and how to use step jump for more efficient movement. Great stuff as always!
