The marshlands also have higher and lower levels, which vary from place to place, but there are temperature differences there and some areas are cooler than others, even in summer.
Personally i like to keep them in water but good point about water heat. Surely new substrate is not needed for dividing considering the roots are purely for water uptake only?

The reason I sometimes put down potting stones is to increase drainage and aeration and to prevent root rot
