Andy’s DIY: Pre Alpha / Alpha 1 Bellows and Shift Cable Change -- Andy's DIY

  • I had seen some other videos, but none that explained how to fasten U joint bellows onto bell housing. I also show a new approach to passing the shift cable through shift cable boot. I also compare Pre Alpha to Alpha 1 Gen 2.
*Note: I mentioned a "C clamp," but it is really a "hose clamp."

So what lower shift cable did you use? I’m going through this same job.

U are suppose to install the u joint bellows on the gimbal housing first then u can press it into the transom assy the eye in the top of the drive was for a trailoring bracket that went in top of the transom assy u have a r series drive or a mr series drive

With as tight as the other bellows are to access during installation, felt this approach would guarantee seal at the transom. Thanks for the input. Im all about finding the most efficient way to do a repair.

Andy, do you know which videos you watched that you referenced in the video that helped with taking things apart?

I used MrSpike2450. His is a Gen 2, but most applies. Good Luck

Andy got a question, i bought new style shift cable, the forums i read say you need a 1/4 tap, but the cable i bought (said it was the replacement) is 9/16 socket head and 1/2 in threads. my out drive is a 78 pre alpha do you know what tap size you used on yours?
    Thanks

I had a friend helping me, and it was his tap set we used, so I don't recall the tap size. We just found the correct tap size through process of elimination. Get a couple of taps that look close, and one should EASILY thread through from the inside by hand. Pay attention to the threads being course or fine. I had my housing completely off when I changed out all the bellows, so it was easy to do on a bench. Once tap bottoms out, connect the leverage tool to it and send it the rest of the way through. That's what we did, and it worked fine. Good luck

Great video Andy... I just purchased a 67 Larson Volero 177 in great condition and engine runs well.... but killing when shifting into forward. After reserarching, found the issue to be lower shift cable and not activating the little kill switch properly therfore keeping switch engaged to kill the switch. So, now onto replacing the shift cable which led me to your video. I have a pre alpha drive and I am finding that, like you said, the shift cable is screwed in from the inside of the bell housing. I assume there are no tricks to remove the cable without removing the bell housing? If I remove the bell housing, is it required to replace all of the Bellows (u joint etc...)? Finally, looks like the only cable I can find are ones that screw into the drive from outside the bellhousing (where you need that *special tool*) so I am hearing I will need to tap the hole in order to do that. Any idea what tap is needed, having issues finding that info. Any help is greatly appreciated and again, thanks for the video!

Pretty hard to remove bell housing without damaging the boots.if you go through the trouble removing, go the extra mile and replace all the drive boots/bellows. As far as the tap, go to harbor freight and buy a tap set for under $50. Don’t remember what size thread, but it was in that set. Just pick the one that threads from the inside easily (like it was made for that hole). Once it bottoms out, connect either the tool that come with kit or appropriate socket and force it the rest of way until it breaches the other side. This will ensure a straight/uniform thread. If the shift cable boot is good, try to extract the cable and run a replacement cable through the old boot? Never tried that because my 81 had all original hoses/bellows. While I was there, I did the gamble bearing and regreased the u joint. I put a video out on rethreading an out drive ram. Look that up to see the kit I purchased from harbor freight. Good luck.

@@andrewlewis7025 First off, thank you very much for the prompt reply and great info. Also, this is my first boat and ever since buying it a 2 weeks ago I started hearing the B reak O ut A nother T housand and man how true that saying is lol. Anyhow, you are probably right in the fact that I should replace all boots while I am in there. This boat barely seems like it was ever in the water it is in such good shape for 53 years old, so even if the boots look good, I bet they are pretty brittle from aging at the minimum. Going to start ordering all the parts for this project tonight. So safe to say, I need... all of the shift cable parts, gasket for drive to bell housing, shift bellow, u joint bellow, and exhaust bellow, the bellow cement/glue or whatever, make that threaded tool you made for around $3, harbor freight tap/die set (I'll watch your other video soon to see which kit, I already bought the metric kit from harbor frieght for another project so not sure if that is the correct one), the tool to take bell housing pin out ( what did you use for that 12 point star for the bell housing pin, did you buy the tool or find something else that worked?). Anything else you can think of that I might be missing? Definitely nervous about this project as I don't know a thing about boats and have just been learning as I go over the last two weeks. This project seems pretty daunting but I always like to do things like this myself vs paying someone and waitng for ever plus not ever knowing if it was done the correct way. Thanks again and wish me luck!

    Good info!
I have the pre Alpha. When i order a bellows kit and gimble bearing, are the kits the same as Alpha 1? Or are they all specific?
    Thanks

I found a kit that is for the pre Alpha (MC-1, MR, R outdrives) and Alpha 1 gen 1. Im pretty sure most those kits are compatible.
I believe i found it on Amazon.

Thank you for a great video. I have the same style pre alpha with the lower shift cable threaded thru to the rear. What size tap did you use? Also you said you tapped to the rear. Was there a specific reason for this? Again perfect information, thanks.

Don’t recall the tap size. Got a tap kit from harbor freight for $25? It’s easier to run shift cable from outside to inside the boat. The bell housing threads on the pre alpha thread from inside out. I just found the appropriate match to thread in my bell housing and hand spun tap until it bottomed out. Should turn easy by hand. Once it bottoms out, use the t handle in kit to cut rest way through to other side. This will allow you to thread from out side in. Someone may have already done yours. Good luck

@@andrewlewis7025 thanks, I didn't think about Harbor freight. I'll head there tomorrow. Again such a big help. Everyone else's video's are from mostly alpha one and later pre alphas. Thanks.

Burn man. I just ordered the original pain in the ass style. Think I'm just going to make a socket with a grove and shave in some groves for a wrench to go on. Damn parts guys lol

Hard to remember everything when you are working in phases. If you haven’t researched yet, there is a bell housing removal tool you will need, it’s less than $15 on Amazon. Fits the 2 bolts on either side. Then just remove boots.
