Squirrels can live 20 years, I had one in my back yard(and yes I knew her on sight) for 16 years! She crawled up to me one day and passed as I sat w/her.
As a New Yorker, it's becoming increasingly embarrassing to live here. We are the ultimate nanny state. The government overreach is even more telling after watching your video and seeing numerous portraits with pet squirrels It's maddening. RIP Fred and Peanut.
Mark Longo rescued Peanut as a baby after it's mother was hit by a car. He lives way upstate in Elmira, NY. He actually operated a 501(c)3 for animal rescues with veterinarians. But someone blew him into the NYS DEC who came to his home and took 4 hrs to execute a warrant, wherein they confiscated both Peanut and his buddy Fred the raccoon. The DEC maintains that Peanut bit one of the officers and thus both animals were put down to test for rabies. Longo disputed their assertion that Peanut bit anyone. Basically it's just another Big Brother strongarm intrusion into citizens doing anything without paying them licensing fees. We here in Nazi NY are pissed.
It's been rather cold and breezy here in sleepy Simi Valley as of late, and nothing sounds better than a feast of pork chops, fried potato balls, and an apple tart for dessert! MmmmMMM! 😋 Can't wait to catch this after work and chat with everybody! Hopefully everyone's having a pleasant week so far! Cheers! ☺️✨
My son told me about Peanut.... people are insane when they think they know better than others. Peanuts killer and the tattle tale should pump their brakes literally and figuratively. My sister has rescued squirrels for years. Kudos to her!! I actually think if there were more people with that dedication and empathy the world would be a better place. Love your videos and thanks for all your hard work. 👍👍
Your outfits are really cute today. I can't wait to taste the sweet potato balls. I love savory sweet potatoes. Thank you for the tribute to Peanut and Fred. I was sick to my stomach when I heard what happened to them. I just don't get how mean people can be. My heart goes out to the owner. In the 1920's my grandmother had a raccoon and a skunk for pets at the same time. They loved her and she loved them. Hope things are going well. Have a great week.
I have a friend who rescued a baby squirrel her son found on the sidewalk on a hot day. it was so little, but they took it and raised it , she found out that avacados are good for squirrels and easy for a baby squirrel to eat . it was messy but baby thrived on it until he was old enough to eat nuts etc. Mr Squirrel grew up and when fully grown they let hm go in and out the window. he played with the wild squirrels in the tree in the yard, and one day he stayed outside never came back in the window. They were devastated, but it was for the best ,he returned to the wild.and his own kind. . He was never caged and allowed the freedom of the house. For months after he left, they found little nests he had built all over the house , in the couch and, hidden places. with sticks and leaves that he brought in from outside, and seeds and nuts. Maybe he found a mate? . . ❤
I owned a flying squirell. I had 3 babies that came from a felled tree. Only one survived. I kept her for 8 years. Wonderful pets. I named mine Shelby.❤
Thanks for the dedication to Peanut and Fred! How sweet is Mish Mish! 🧡💛 Your pork chops. sweet potatoes, gravy and apple tart looked incredible! Yum! Hey! Ron and Justine are you going to do a show about Thanksgiving? Thanks for doing a showing of paintings of people with their squirrels!
I had a friend with a pet squirrel and people stopped visiting after a while. The squirrel was a menace and terrorized visitors. It would hide behind the pictures hanging on the wall and pounce on people.
@pattycake8272 Good for you . That was a problem he had also . After the rabbit got shocked a couple of times it realized that it wasn't worth it .🐰⚡😂 .
Hey yall! I love your little shows! A little corner of wholesome in a big bad internet. Justine, you can restore your cast iron with electrolysis! My husband restores his in this way and it works even on the ones people paint. It’s very easy and there’s lots of videos on TH-cam. Have a great weekend!
Thank you for speaking up for Peanut and Fred! We're wildlife rehabbers (WITH PERMITS, for you Nosey Parkers out there!!) and we have the sweetest little squirrel that was deemed unreleasable due to developmental delays. His name is Pip S. Queak and he is an absolute darling! We can't imagine our life without him and were heartbroken over what the Longos have been put through. As I've heard it said many times recently, we need a government without the resources or desire to conduct a 5 hour raid over a squirrel. (To answer your question about their living arrangements, they have a rescue ranch for animals in upstate New York and both Peanut and Fred were residents.)
What kind of person would complain about a squirrel! Please tell me! I live in ireland where our squirrels are endangered. If I had a pet squirrel, everyone in the village would be hanging over the garden wall to see it! Cee, from the little cottage in ireland 💚💚💚🍀🍀🍀
Thank you Ron and Justine, for talking about Peanut the squirrel and Fred the raccoon. When I saw that news story, it just broke my heart! I love the squirrels that have been coming to my yard to feed along with the birds and chipmunks..I also get raccoons , possums, groundhogs, wild bunnies etc. they are all dear to me! I just love your channel and look forward to watchimg every week! Love from an old Grandma. ❤💕
Cubed and roasted sweet potatoes with olive oil and Old Bay seasoning will blow your mind. I know it sounds super weird and I don't know how I convinced myself to try it, but somehow it works awesome!
When they murdered peanut and Fred. I was furious. That little squirrel and the raccoon were housed in a loving home not hurting anyone. Shame on who killed them. I know the man was devastated. He loved that sweet little thing ❤️❤️
Justine I love your chicken pot lid. You have to sand blast cast iron. It will take the paint off perfectly and make a smooth finish. Usually a machinist will have one. Hope that helps.
Put the cast iron pot in a campfire or your cabin fireplace and leave it there until the coals cool. The paint will burn off but if it doesn't repeat the process. If you scrub out the pot's interior use a chainmail pot cleaner/scrubber.
For the cast iron you can get a plastic tote and make a lye bath with water. Let the pan soak 1-2 days and it should remove the paint and any build up. Then you can wash it with soap and water and season. It is safer than sanding down for the cast iron as well.
Thank you so much for talking about and showing pictures of pet squirrels. Love both your channels. I love both you guys! You are so nice. Watching your show is like visiting two very wonderful people!
I look forward to my Wednesday evenings to watch your weekly videos. You find so many interesting historical content each week not to mention Justine’s weekly cooking. 😊
Thank you so much for the history of pet squirrels! I had no idea it used to be so prevalent. I love chipmunks & squirrels. I have gotten wild chipmunks to eat at my feet & even to pet them. But it takes awhile to get them to trust you. And I've only been able to pet certain ones. They have different personalities. Their fur is soft as silk 🙂 Idk if you said this, but people train their pet squirrels to use a litter box. Love your channels. Congratulations on your wedding. And God's abundant blessings to you 🙂
Sand the inside of the pot until all the substance is gone. Then you reseason the pot with lard/bacon grease ect in heat until your happy with the look of the surface.
My dad had a pet squirrel when he was a child in the late 1920's or early 1930's. Was just like a tiny dog. Not that is has anything to do with the topic at hand, but dad also had a pet monkey when he was stationed in the Phillipines during WWII. He actually brought the monkey back to the US but grandma wouldn't let him keep it in the house. He ended up donating him to the zoo in Rochester, NY. Dad would often bring us to the zoo to see his buddy.
Why do we always jump from Halloween to Christmas so fast but everybody forgets about Thanksgiving? Hey, what about me?? 🦃 I love Thanksgiving and it’s just tossed to the side! 😟 Come on guys!☺️

Sandblast. Find a local place that does sandblasting for cleaning up your cast iron. I bring a few pieces so that I can get a deal. Then I season my pieces and they are ready to cook.
You’ll need to sandblast the pot, once clean you’ll be able to retreat the cast iron pot like you would a skillet. This method really does work, I had to use this same method for a cast iron skillet.
Sandblast. You should be able to take it somewhere that refinishes hardware. And and after that's done, check for Lead. You can get one of those lead tester swabs they use to check the paint in old houses.

Thanks Justine and Ron for a really fascinating discussion about squirrels as pets. I’m surprised to see squirrels in all the artwork. The conversation about tin was also quite interesting. One of the best videos I’ve ever seen ❤! Thanks so much for always entertaining and educating.
I actually saw a video of a cat bringing a knife thru the cat door so.... you laugh but it really might have been the cat that put the knife on the roof. Or a ghost? Hahaha
Ron. I had an old Cast Iron Pan I restored that had some funky solvent & staining on it... I used a Wire Brush Drill attachment that took it all off.. Once removed, just dip a cloth in Veg Oil and rub well into the Pan, and then Bake it in the oven for about an hour to help season it...
Squirrels as pets were very popular in the Middle Ages and later on, there are plenty of Medieval manuscripts and Renaissance paintings depicting them. I can't remember the source, but I think it was a Medieval theologian or bishop who complained that nuns and monks should not have squirrels as pets because they got too attached to them, which was a distraction from God. He grumbled about it because it was so common - I reckon his complaint was blithely ignored.
We restored an extremely damaged cast iron pot, we finally sandblasted the whole thing and started fresh. We re-seasoned it with lard and a high heat grill to make it safe to cook with.
The pot looks like someone has melted lead in it. Probably to make bullets. I have eaten squirrel, it tastes good but it's bony. People also eat raccoons. Rabbits will use a litter box. Let's have Thanksgiving first. Keep showing the old ways. Blessings to you both.
My father used oven cleaner on his cast iron, heating it in the over per instructions and it took everything off beautifully. Then he seasoned it in the traditional way. You've nothing to lose by trying it.
I love the pet squirrel idea. My oldest brother rescued a squirrel when he was a little boy and kept it as a pet. When he became older, he had a way to charm squirrels so they would come to him, sit on his lap, and hang out with him on his porch. He is definitely a squirrel guy. Too bad it isn't common anymore. It might save them from being dead on the roads!
Totally off topic but have you thought of how to cook this years turkey? Do you plan to brine it or par boil it before baking? You could hang it and spin roast it too.😊😊
For the pot: sand blasting would prob. Get it. Some states don’t allow any ‘wildlife’ as pets And yes RABBITS can be potty trained. They eat and poop usually at the same time so you hang the hay feeder above the littler box (we use paper bedding) and when the are fixed they don’t tend to pee/poop everywhere since they almost stop being territorial after that.
When I was little, my older sister had a pet chipmunk named Alvin (from the Chipmunks); later in my teens, she had a pet raccoon named Bandit. She made sure Bandit kept up with her rabies vaccinations. Alvin lived in a cage with an exercise wheel in it, on top of the upright piano we had then. I remember one morning waking up to hear my older sister crying because she found Alvin dead in his cage. As for Bandit, she had a cage in the sideyard of our house. Eventually, Bandit began to revert to her wild nature, and we had to call Fish and Game to get Bandit and release her in the wild. My sister had to leave the house before they came so she wouldn't see them taking Bandit.
3:07 😂 people have no idea what they have when they get ahold of these pots and pans.😂❤ I've been using steel brush on a drill for over a decade for cast iron. Just don't wear shorts, bristles will break off and attack your legs😂😂 SAFETY FIRST 😂😂❤
Awww I wish I could go to the parade I live in Canada a little too far. Some day I would love to come to your little town my husband and I love visiting the U.S.A so much history.
Squirrels can live 20 years, I had one in my back yard(and yes I knew her on sight) for 16 years! She crawled up to me one day and passed as I sat w/her.
Sandblast the pot, clean with white vinegar, soak it in food grade linseed oil, bake it empty, let cool, ready for use
Thanks for speaking up for Peanut the squirrel 🐿️
(and Fred, his buddy the raccoon as well) I won't get into it further here, but Thank You both.

Very very interesting, i don't know history of squirrels, poor peanut, the painting is wonderful
My avatar is my squirrel I have had for ten years. I do rescue, they do NOT carry rabies.
Thanks for the dedication to Peanut and Fred! How sweet is Mish Mish! 🧡💛
Your pork chops. sweet potatoes, gravy and apple tart looked incredible! Yum! Hey! Ron and Justine are you going to do a show about Thanksgiving? Thanks for doing a showing of paintings of people with their squirrels!
They killed the squirrel deliberately, don't forget Bob Ross and his pet squirrel .❤
I had a friend with a pet squirrel and people stopped visiting after a while. The squirrel was a menace and terrorized visitors. It would hide behind the pictures hanging on the wall and pounce on people.
So that is just one of the many reasons to have a pet squirrel. :)
I knew someone that had a rabbit and trained it to use a litter box 🐰💨 🤣
I had a dwarf rabbit that would also. Plus chew on cords and the wall

Use a crushed walnut shell blast on the inside, it will take it right off....., then just clean and re-season. Works great!
You handled the Peanut outrage brilliantly. Thank you so much for highlighting this intrusive event, as well as the history of pet squirrels.

Only a very biter and jealous person.
I had two pet squirrels back in the day, I loved them
My grandmother had a pet squirrel named Squeaky who lived in the house with us. Squeaky was tamed and would ride on her head.
Our neighbor had a pet squirrel she raised and set free. She would carry it in the hood of her jacket.
Take the pot to an auto shop or machine shop & get it sand blasted. 💜
Yes, rabbits can be potty trained to use a litter box.
I agree with sandblasting. I think the poorer people had squirrels, they were for dinner not for pets. lol

If the fascists thought Peanut had rabies, then he should have been put in quarantine for 10 days, and released to his owner if healthy.
Yes and the rabies tests came back negative.

Elizabeth Taylor had a pet squirrel named Nibbles when she was a child. I believe there was once a book entitled "Nibbles and Me" that gives details.
Rabbits can very much be potty trained lmao.
I love watching you guys your so cute and i love mish mish. Love you both and god bless you

Get foil and make a ball and scrape the pan inside. Foil literally removes all
A brass wire brush is attached to a Dremel tool. Test for Lead in the paint.
Sandblast. You should be able to take it somewhere that refinishes hardware. And and after that's done, check for Lead. You can get one of those lead tester swabs they use to check the paint in old houses.

We loved Peanut!! 🐿️
The artists all separately captured the near identical expression of every single squirrel owner.
take it and have it sand blasted and my cat black cat Evie is butter mad too
Thank you for all the C & C fun, Justine, Ron & Mishmish! Have a wonderful day and be blessed, friends! xoxo
