I have lard as a longer lasting prep and it can be turned into a long lasting emergency candle if not used for food. My mother used it a lot. I tend to use lighter oils like sunflower or olive oil but it is a better option for baking and frying.
I love the beautiful dress you are wearing Justine! FYI, skunks eat chicken eggs 🥚and young chicks🐣, so you may want to have a serious talk with Bob🦨 about staying out of the coop. But they are omnivores and great to have around the cabin, since they also eat bugs, grubs, snakes, mice, etc. They love nuts and berries too, so if you keep him well-fed, he may stay out of the hen house.
I have many cats, and feed strays of every kind. I have skunks, possums, raccoons and squirrels. My cats go out, they sniff each other, and go their separate ways. All my wild life get along, very happy and blessed. I love all animals.
We always had skunks living under my dad's barn. We just called each one "Petunia". Once, we saw a mama skunk taking her babies for a walk, all in single file behind her. They really do bounce along, like Pepe Le Pew.
I haven't watched these being made yet, but I have made chips slicing a potato, some salt and oil and let er' rip potato chip! I imagine these are similar except the lard. I love to give them a little burn. I love burned chips. If the chip makers sell "only the burnt ones" I would buy boat loads of them.
Those chips look "get in my belly good"! I love every C & C and this was no exception. So excited to see your home lived in. Have a glorious and blessed week, Rayfields! xoxo
I'm less than a minute in but I can't stop laughing at you and Mish Mash! I have 6 rescue cats and 2 especially who like to be annoying, get on the roof and start crying while you rush to be the rescue services and "rescue" then. Meanwhile they are PERFECTLY capable of getting themselves off the roof especially when hungry. But I have done just what you did with Mish Mash. My chocolate brown cat called Claude came to me when he was 3 days old as a foster with his mum. As she lost her milk early to trauma, she'd been through a lot, I had to bottle feed Claude frequently and he developed a "favourite place" to see the world from and that involves jumping on my back from a height if I'm bent down in the garden. He's very sweet, and I am going to have to conceed to his demands for pats and finish here. Thank you Justine for making me laugh.
I'll be damned if these chips don't taste amazing! 😋 I can't wait to see what goodies Justine got for her birthday! And hopefully this issue with the skunk is resolved without the little guy getting hurt and nobody getting sprayed! I can't imagine either of you would want to have to bathe in tomato juice… 😂
20:11 I’m pretty sure the name of the book is “ The Ladies Companion for the dressing room “ the seller, tccunha, just recreated that section. Also the fat from warm butter would activate the oils in the parsley that helped circulate blood so it wouldn’t pool in the area and cause a deep bruise. It also wouldn’t dry out like a water based compress.
Beautiful and inviting scenery. Love the gifts you got! That water pitcher is great! Thanks so much for sharing. I really enjoyed this video. Have a blessed day, and many happy returns of your day..belated. :) Though I know I must be 50 years older than you, but I so enjoy your company. You make me smile, and you are both so sweet. BTW.. I love your dresses. You look so pretty, and they all suit you!
My dad was from the Netherlands. He said fries potatoes were a popular street food, especially in winter. They were eaten with creamy mayonnaise which is how I eat them today😅 but mustard sounds like a good idea too. Thanks for another great video 🥰♥️
Add some cheese curds and gravy and you have poutine, a great Canadian treat!! Bob has to go!! You can get a live trap and bait it with marshmallows, skunks love marshmallows. We also have a skunk problem, a few years ago we had one living under the bathtub, every so often you could hear a scratching, there was a cold air exchange, and the cat food happened to be right there, so the skunk would eat the food that got left. He finally left, and hubby boarded up the hole in the deck, now we have a strobe light under the deck, and that has so far deter the skunks. Witch hazel will do the same, when applied to a bruise. My grandpa would apply butter on his burns.
My great great grandparents homesteaded in the Ozarks in Missouri sometime in the 1800s. They were originally from Virginia. My great grandfather was named George Washington Saunders. We have something in common and actually I suspect naming children after the 1st President must have been fairly common!! ❤❤
Happy birthday Justine. I have heard that a skunk must have it's back feet on the ground to clench the muscles on the scent sack. If you pick him up by the tail he can't spray. I've never tried it. If you get sprayed I accept no responsibility.😊
The original name was Pomme Frites, which is French for Fried Potatoes. The early French cookbooks list them both as rounds, like you made, and sticks, what we call French Fries. And, while it is true that sliced, fried potatoes do date back pretty much to when the potato migrated to Europe, the paper thin version did originate here in America. Yes, there are a number of stories about who and when, and no one is really sure which one is accurate, the European version was always thicker. FYI - Beignets are still extremely popular in New Orleans - pretty much any coffee shop you go into will automatically bring you Beignets to go with your coffee.
Belated happy birthday Justine, now I know 4 people that share that birthdate - my best friend, my daughter, you, and my grand nephew who was just born. Luv n hugs for you and Ron
I'm so glad you had a great birthday. That was so sweet of Ron to plan the surprise tea party. I also love the water pitcher, it's so neat. And the cup, even though it's modern, is so cool. Thanks so much for sharing your books and facts. My mom's mother had a skunk for a pet in the early 1900s. My sister and I thought that was crazy. Good luck with the house.
Happy belated birthday Justine and wishes for many Happy Birthdays with Ron!❤ I think Mish Mish didn't come down because you had a pot, very smart cat, he or she thought twice and bolted Lol. I love that Christian version of Cinderella can't wait to hear you tell the story!
Might be a female skunk making a den. We had one who dug down along our concrete foundation in our last home. The little skunks would come up and hang out on our back patio at nights. She used to 'steal' tarps from our wood pile and drag shredded bits into the den. It took us a while to discover what was going on, LOL.
Very beautiful video Ron and Justine. I love your video. In Italy the first story of Cenerentola is write in 1634 of Giambattista Basile the name is La gatta Cenerentola ❤, but it's very different as you said
Curious - how would they wash the grease out of the kitchen towels? Now we use paper towels, but I wonder how they got the kitchen towels clean of grease stains. - Thanks. 😊
Both my grandmothers swore by an onion poultice to cure certain infections and I’ve actually seen it work and experienced it. I had a boil on my arm. Grandma applied heat, opened and drained it and then on went the poultice. It has to stay on for a looong time and it smells strongly of onion. Occasionally grandma changed it out. It felt so weird BUT it did work-or at least the infection cleared up within 48 hours.
Thank you for another great video! I remember my mother frying up a batch of "potato chips". No matter how she tried, she just couldn't fill a bowl with potato chips (we kids ate them fast enough that Mom couldn't fry them fast enough😃).
Great episode! My second Great-Grandfather was named George Washington Dills. His son, my great-uncle, was the founder of Dillsboro, NC. His other brothers were named after people in history too. Such fun. P. S. I’m off to make some fried potatoes …especially since ya got me drooling! 😂
Skunks hate the smell of their spray too. That's why they'll do a big performance of stomping around, fluffing up their fur, and pointing their back end at a potential threat, hoping to scare it away. Spraying is the last resort.
Just had that last night. I slice the potatoes about a quarter inch thick on my mandolin and slice onion and fry them in bacon drippings. Soooo good. Had them with some smoked sausage.
My Grandmother cooked with Lard a lot! She also rendered her own Bacon fat, which I do also. I do not have lard, but I recently aquired some Beef Tallow, which is also excellent for frying! I am trying to reduce our intake of seed & soy oils. Not good for people.

I render lard and tallow every year when we have a hog and a cow processed. Lard makes the best biscuits, tortillas and pie crust.
