1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ Frame Swap

  • This is my 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ. It's a Sahara edition, with the 4.0 manual. My TJ lived in the Midwest (aka the "Rust Belt" iykyk) it's whole life until now and after decades of road salt eating away like cancer, the worn out frame needed replacing. Modern 4x4's are incredibly advanced and lightyears ahead of what we had a mere 25 years ago, however that's exactly why I decided to put the time, money and patience into restoring my TJ back to life. They just don't make them like this anymore. Jeep LJ's are still the unicorn when it comes to this generation, but relativity clean Jeep TJ's are becoming increasingly rare and prices on them keep going up. Yes I could have cut my losses and taken out a car loan on something newer, but I love the personality of my little Jeep, the no-frills and torquey attitude, no high tech computers or cross traffic alert sensors. Just raw 4x4 fun; the manual connecting you & the vehicle together.
This is by no means a step-by-step video, but there isn't a ton of videos on TH-cam of this process. If you noticed towards the end, my Dana 35 rear axle has given up the ghost (surprise surprise) and I have since swapped in a Dana 44 from an LJ.

Wow, never thought of even doing this, my 2002 is hanging by a thread, passenger side skid plates 3 bolts just pulled loose from the rust, what is $$ cost of something like this? Looks like more than jeep is worth 😵‍💫🤷🏼‍♂️😐

Depends on how much you value your TJ.
Used vehicles prices are still pretty high, although the curve seems to be coming down.
However, TJ’s are still a very hot item, like many 90’s - early 2000’s vehicles that are becoming “classics” now. Tacomas, 4Runners, 80 Series, OBS Fords, Cummins all are highly sought after because they aren’t built the same anymore.
Unless your TJ needs a ton more work, I’d say a frame swap IS totally worth it, it will make your resale value so much higher if you choose to ever sell your Jeep. Looking at $3-$5k for a shop to do the job.

Who and where was the repair done? I have a 98 Sahara, automatic, hardtop that the body and interior is in perfect condition, but the frame is rusted through at the front control arm brackets on both sides.

i mean... if you're pulling the engine/transmission, anyway, why not just drop a V8 in it?

Just got a 97 at auction. Same one I had 20years ago. Looking to do the same thing to her. How much did the swap run you?

Depending on your area, how rusty your Jeep is, what kinda shop does the labor, and how good of a deal you find on a used frame (or if you get a brand new frame) I would allot $5k-$7k for the entire process.

I'm having the opposite done. My frame is solid but the body was rusting away on it. Got a South Carolina tub with no rust, new fenders, tailgate and windshield frame. Can't wait.
