Driving up the HIGHEST road in WA State - Hart's Pass & Slate Peak
After a month down with valve issues, the ol' 4.0 with 220k on the clock needed a top-end rebuild. I was pretty surprised by this development, as I taken very good care of my Jeep and never beat on it.
With the top-end gone through, she seems to be back to normal. Gaining trust back in the Jeep by taking her on a mini road trip to the Mount Baker Wilderness area of Washington State.
September is usually an interesting month for the PNW, as it's either still warm with summer-like temps or quickly becomes fall and rainy. My only gripe with the beautiful Pacific Northwest is how short the fall color season is. I plan on at least a couple fall videos before winter hits, so stay tuned for that.
I did not have as much time to film this video as I would have liked, but I hope you can take away some interesting facts about Washington State. I thoroughly enjoyed this road trip, Highway20 is a beautiful drive in general, but combining it with Hart's Pass and Slate Peak Lookout was the icing on the cake.
Thanks for following along.

The first trip of the summer in the books! Testing out the latest configuration of the Jeep. Can't wait for what summer has in store for me, and the many more memories this little Jeep will bring me. This time I travel up Snoqualmie Pass on I-90 to visit the famous Stampede Pass. Next time I plan to document driving straight through the Pass. On this journey, I slow down, branching off the main...

That bumper looks so good🤌
dang that was beautiful, almost felt like fantasy world

That’s the same one from the music video
Dang that’s a nice jeep, mines a white gladiator with 42 inch tires and a six inch lift with finder deletes.

Can’t wait to drive mine in the snow 😊😍
I can’t wait to drive mine on cold flat dirt ❤😂

Would a stock jl had that trail well
Yes
Just got my rebuilt engine for basically your twin wrangler. I’d happily film some stuff for you if you’re ever interested!
Shoot me a DM on Instagram!
What lights are those?
Auxbeam 9” Pro series lights!
Great stuff! I’ve wanted to take my CJ up to Hart for a while now. Thanks for the inspiration!
I had hoped to get up there this year but it's looking like next year will allow for a bit more free time to perhaps camp and really enjoy the area.
Darland Mountain is at 6981 feet, located west of Yakima, it is higher than than harts peek. FYI
Interesting, is there a drivable road that goes up Darland Mountain? I have not heard of that, will check it out. Hart’s Pass to Slate Peak Lookout is 7450ft.
Love the arb bumper, i've got one on my 2 door jk and love it
Yep, my 97 Sahara is on 33"s with 4:10 gears, Ox locker up front dana limited slip rear, 1" lift🤭 and runs and ride better than factory with +200k. The 33's actually rides about the same as my 05 LJ R factory stock. I might install 33's on it with the next set of tires but not sure. There's war in my brain on leaving it 100% OEM.
Bummer about the rebuild, glad you're back on the (off)road!
Thanks, me too!
Nice video! The kind of “overland” videos I enjoy the most. Simple, relaxing, amazing views, appropriate music. Thanks for sharing!
How was the drive up? I saw some rugged roads but perhaps they were just random other roads in the area? Asking because I have a normal family sedan, wondering if it can make it up…
You can make it up easily in a sedan, just be mindful as there are some sections with small jagged rocks that might puncture a street tire. I definitely wouldn’t do it in the snow in a sedan though.
Yeah too many peeps in those locations. moving on...
This is always the problem with the known spots.
Northwest Washington State was my home for over 40 years and the minute your video started I knew this was the North Cascades, even tho I've never heard of Hart's Pass or Slate Peak. The geology/geography of the North Cascades is just so iconic, so unique in so many ways, it's hard to miss if you've experienced it for any length of time. I used to drive competitive amateur sports car rallys all over the Pacific Northwest, and once competed in a night rally that ran from the base of Mt Baker south across the western slopes of the Cascades to the upper reaches of the Skagit Valley, rally was called "Night on Bald Mountain". We had snow at higher elevations (it was February), used single lane forest service roads...was a fun, sometimes scary, and exciting rally. I was driving a Honda CRX, great car, but not an off-road vehicle.
@@loragunning5394 Sounds epic, I love rally.
When I was looking for a TJ to buy i started watching some of your videos just to daydream
@@philshalischieffer9588 Did you end up buying one?
Just found your channel. Great Job.
I really love the vibe in this video. You got some beautiful shots too! The top of Slate Peak is one of, if not the best, views in WA that can be driven to IMO.
Thanks Jeff! And I agree, it was awesome to finally go there. Next summer I’d like to do it again on my dual sport bike. Funny you should comment, I had just watched your Mt. Baker video (and had planned to visit the dam a couple weeks before even seeing your video on it.) 😆
@rustyintheoutdoors agree! That road would be a great time on a dual sport / adv. That's the kind of road my 1200GS is happy on (i.e not very technical haha)
@WheretoNextOverland Sweet, let me know if you ever wanna go riding in the future!
Beautiful photography! Love the dam shot at 6:50. WA is such a beautiful state. Funny, I just installed a gmrs with the exact antenna. Would love to do the roof rack you have but have a custom made frame and it won’t bolt on. Trying to find a work around. Microwave corn on the cob? Interesting. Glad you’re back on the trail!
Nice, I love Midland products. And yes there were some interesting items in that store hahaha.
Beautiful. Very nicely done.👍
So far October around here has been pretty nice. Few rainy days but nothing like we will see here soon. Yeah we sure don't have that long buffer zone for fall (sun, less to no rain) before it just starts raining all the time.
Hey man, I was wondering what’s you lift and tire set up? I love your Jeep very clean and simplistic looking. I also have a Tj and I’m trying to get it looking somewhat like yours. Simple but versatile.

Hi. Just like to double check if you are looking for some sponsorship from Auxbeam?
Yes, I would be stoked to work with you guys! My Jeep needs some serious light upgrades with the dark winter months fast approaching.
@@rustyintheoutdoors Sure! That would be great. Just replied to your message!
Do you not have sway bar disconnects up front?
@@TJY2K Not yet!
@rustyintheoutdoors they're game changers. It'll make the trails so much more comfortable and your tj more capable. I know you eventually want lockers, but this modification will improve your traction a lot!
I'm only a 1hr from there been wanting to go before it gets too cold
I want to come here
Man i LOVE watching your vids. The best in terms of cinematics. Super relaxing. Thanks for doing what you do
Thank you, glad you enjoy it!
TJs are so cool looking
It's nice to see some great adventures like this with a jeep tj.
What size lift and tires you running?👀

Wow. Thank you for showing how many good spots there are to camp. I'm on the hunt for them. Two weekends ago I was there but is was way to foggy. I couldn't see much. Very nice video.
Wow--such a beautiful and isolated location. I loved it because it was mainly gravel & rock; no mud--lol! Where is this in Washington? What area, trail, overlook? I have to admit--a little scary on the narrow roads and steep drop-offs. Gives me a huge pucker-factor for someone who lives on flat ground in the southeastern US with very little experience in steep terrain.
Loving your Jeep TJ overlanding videos. I'm building my 2003 Jeep TJ Rubicon that I've owned since new into the ultimate overlander and your videos are helping. Noticed you had a soft top iKamper a year ago and now are running the "much lower profile" Inspired RT. I am looking at the iKamper 3.0 Mini (hardtop) and it's really the only one I have ever considered since our TJ's are sooo short. Noticed your TJ did look a little "top heavy" when coming down those steep inclines with the iKamper versus the Inspired Overland. Can you please share your brief thoughts on your experiences with both of these tents, on the trail as well as on the highway. Why did you forgo one for the other. Inquiring minds would like to know. Thanks--David
Why did you air down to just drive on dirt ROADS with no obstactles? Lol
For one more ride comfort, and two it’s a good habit to get into so you don’t tear up the forest service roads. That’s why all these AWD crossovers have been ruining the dirt roads.
I just love your videos. Your videos are one of the inspirations that fueled my long-time dream to own a TJ, love for outdoors and enjoying the simplicity. And it finally happened, just a few days ago I bought my own TJ! Keep on filming!
Thank you! Love to see it, what year & trim did you get?
@@rustyintheoutdoors It's a blue 2006 4.0L Sport. Gently modified (bigger wheels, lifter suspension), but I'm planning on restoring it closer to the original state. Actually, do you mind sharing what wheels and tires you have on your TJ? They look bigger than stock, but they fit your car perfectly! :)
@@ostrowele Mine are the factory “Gambler” wheels and I currently have 33x10.50r15 BFG K02 tires.
what rack are you using?
It’s from Smittybilt.
