  • These are the little guys that go on the shifting fork. Mine disintegrated I guess:

    Let me know if that link stops working
    My jeep was making a horrendous clicking noise every time I would let off the gas and coast while in gear. (You can hear the noise toward the beginning of the video when i twist the front drive shaft.)
    I managed to fix the problem for about 60 bucks and about 12 hours of my time. Totally worth it. And with this video, anyone else will be able to do the same thing. Let me know if you have any questions. I respond pretty quick.

    The Transfer case would be very very similar. Get it diagnosed at a repair place first. Sometimes they do it for free. It would be annoying to pull the T-case apart and find out it is working just fine.

    if i saw a jeep to buy with that mess on the transfer case, i would run away from it fast

  • @JerryRigEverything
    @JerryRigEverything  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agreed. I had to take it apart 3 more times before i realized my bearing on the output was sticking out a mm too far. So i had to re seal it every time I put it back together. Thats why it looks like i used so much.

    I don't quite remember but i think it was 30mm. I made a video for how to change out the fluid. If you search "NP 231 J Transfer case flud change jeep" It should pop up.

    Informative video, good tip on shifting into 4wd to move the output shaft high enough up to get the snap ring back on. Just an FYI to anyone else doing this job spend the $12 at NAPA Auoparts for the snap ring pliers, this'll save you a lot of time and aggravation.
    I just finished putting mine back together, those plastic pads were worn off on the Big Fork (mode fork?) inside my case not letting 4x4 fully engage. Hopefully it's fixed now.

    Great job for not sitting on the couch. Please, look to the right and check out some of the T. C. videos by folks who do it everyday. Not using "um" to much is a great start. Looking forward to the remake, (Why not to use so much silicon) where "this part" is replaced with words like pump, output shaft, yolk... Keep up the good work, DIY forever.

  • @NoahKuzel

    Did you use enough RTV? The proper way to use RTV is to apply a bead behind the bolt holes and then compression will flatten it out without it getting in the threaded holes.

    Heh, I found this vid about a year ago just wondering what it would take to crack into my t-case. Low and behold, my jeep started making the exact same noise not too long ago, and I yanked the t-case and cracked it open today. Yup, the shift range fork is worn out and I'll be putting a new one in as soon as I get it. Thanks for the vid, it made my life much easier.

    QUESTION! @ 5:00 exactly you can see the output bearing after taking off the first guard cone. After you remove that snap ring can you somehow pull that bearing out without taking off the whole second base?

    • @steveyulenburg129

      You have to split the case to R&R the output shaft bearing.

    Hey Jerry... nice video - got a question.... when you installed the TC back onto the tranny.... you mention a little seal thingy.... I have mine out currently and putting a SYE on it... when i go to install i back into the jeep... is there a seal or something that goes in between the tranny and TC? I am assuming no RTV between there....

    • @MrThager
      @MrThager 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you haven't got your answer yet Kevin Bartoletta the TC and tranny are completely separate from each other..meaning they do NOT share fluid. No seal needed there.

  • @celeste0316
    @celeste0316 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    My son in law ran my jeep off the road in 4wd the other day. Since then it wont run when we shift it into 2wd and is making a horrible loud noise. We managed to get it into 2wd twice but it wont drive reverse or go into park and can only be run in 4wd. I think its the transfer case but not sure what part of the transfer case it could be. Do you think it is most likely the Tcase or possibly the transmission?

    • @tobster421
      @tobster421 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's most likely the t case. I just did the same thing with my yj. Turns out that I just snapped the slip yoke on my car so I decided to put on a new SYE on it. Just get under it and check the driveshaft and slip yoke assembly. Something probably broke there

    What was the part called that was ground down?

  • @stanlouis458
    @stanlouis458 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're going to need more sealant than that. The stuff should be oozing out a lot further than that. Like drooping down like ice sickles. That way your oil pickup tube can suck up any excess inside the t-case plugging oil passages and detonating it all over the road leaving you stranded. Other than that good job.
