Pre-TH-cam I asked somebody what "quartersawn" meant. He didn't know. It's not until TH-cam that I finally learned. This is a great, short demonstration of what it means.
Quarter Sawn oak wood is very beautiful! I bought some in 1x 6 x8 material it’s what cabinets were made with over 100 years ago! I bought mine at Rockler in Pasadena back in 2017.
Oh, finally I see someone who know how to quatersaw lumber ! Did you know that you can easily saw two quarter at the same time if your horizontal band saw table is wide enough. And of course all 4 quarters at the same time if they all fit on your saw table 😄
Down here at the farm we enjoyed cutting it the ole fashioned way. Not as bad of a work to do. More time consuming. But, it’s well worth it at the end of the day. All the other methods of quarter sawn. Is also good to try. But I’d rather just keep things simple and do it the way we did it. Thanks for the feedback.
The last house I built before retirement was completely done with 1/4 white oak flooring except the bathrooms. With maple trim and interior window wood. Absolutely beautiful, the perfect way to quit.
When i was about 15 I would show up at the saw mill and load my trailer up with what we called "slabs" or the part cut off that is usually discarded or turned into sawdust. I had a special "saw horse" at home that I would stack the slabs into and use a chain saw to cut them to stove length. We used wood for heating and cooking in those days. No running water, no indoor bathroom.
Nice looking wood. We mill so much oak at the hunting camp- it’s crazy to see the beautiful qs wood that’s used for bridge decking and small water crossings.
Nice saw mill. I built one using a chainsaw and it works pretty good especially for what it is. I wish I could afford one of these, but I don't cut enough lumbar to justify it. If I had one I would probably cut more. Mine is all manual using a hand crank to move the saw. Low tech but effective.
I always wondered why most furniture lumber is NOT quarter sawn? If I were a sawyer, I'd make as much quarter sawn lumber as possible. Its a better, more stable board to build with.
We tend to use 2 different brands of blades for this mill. With hard woods as you see in this clip. I’m using a brand new turbo 7 blade. Tends to take 8 to 10 hard wood logs for it to get dull. About 3 or 4 sharpening. The blade will start splitting or break in mid cut. Thanks for the feedback
My Dadfy is part of Louisiana. Sawmill. History as his Picture is at Longleaf Sawmill Museum he left. Longleaf to go to Powell Lumber in Lake Charles. Louisiana. Rip. Daddy
Looks like it made lots of rift and a little quarter. Missed the heart too much opening up to get the fullest figure. You got to line up the heart in both ends of the log.
Why not level the pith in the half-cut? I get you're going to cut it out anyway, but looks like you've got 6 inches of board with a diagonal pith running the length, and grain around it that wraps and will never be quatersawn.
Not what I thought quarter sawing was. I thought you cut it into quarters, then put the bottom of the "V" down and cut vertical boards, then square off the new sides.
The bottom cuts have the growth rings going vertical. That’s your true quarter sawing. But, If I cut it on top. The growth rings would be going more of a 45 degree. The 45 degree are considered a rift sawn lumber. And that would be a low quality lumber. Thank you for the feedback.
The size of the log and the Cants later are different than the you should do...Ya took the easy way out!!! The logs goes to a Hexagon or a Octagon... Of course it take planning to do the this.. But every turn of the cant is Quarter Sawed then... around the juvenile wood!!!!
Haha. I could do better with my camera skills. But, I’m still learning as I go with filming. & sawing lumber. We appreciate you watching and for the feedback. Thank you 🙏
Most of the quarter saw look in our house is fake. It's solid Oak. I just made really thick homemade veneers out of logs for the wide stuff and 4×4 from pallets for the narrow. Looks fancy as hell but still better than anything you can buy at a reasonable price. But it's between .250 and .130 through a plainer veneer and "green" Titebond glue fake.🤷♂️ Better than Ikea
Y’all take your shoes off and set a spell! Cause California is the place you otta be! Swimming Pools and movie stars! Guess no one here will know what’s this is from!
Some people might say it is.. but at the end of the day. You’ll be doubling your profit. And I think it’s worth the time to cut it, stack it, and dry it. When we got done kiln drying this red oak down to 8%. I was shocked on the results! There was hardly and boards that twist, bend, bowed or cupped. Probably about 10 to 15 boards moved a little bit. Out of the the 150 boards we made. it was perfectly straight.
@firewaterfarmsawmill awesome 👌. Really in regular sawing only the boards from the outside of the tree may warp a bit. Once you get closer to the pith the line through is better basically 2 quarter sawn boards edge to edge. Basically you are just cutting smaller boards out of a given diameter...this is why I don't do it.
Beautiful to see true quarter sawn lumber.
Thank you, we ain’t the best at it. But we sure tried the best we could for first timers.
I agree. People always say “you can’t get that anywhere”
Pre-TH-cam I asked somebody what "quartersawn" meant. He didn't know. It's not until TH-cam that I finally learned. This is a great, short demonstration of what it means.
We appreciate you watching. We also have a Full video of talking more about quarter sawn hardwoods, on the channel.
Quarter Sawn oak wood is very beautiful! I bought some in 1x 6 x8 material it’s what cabinets were made with over 100 years ago! I bought mine at Rockler in Pasadena back in 2017.
Thank you...FINALLY...somebody that understands quater sawing
Haha thanks. We still new at it. We tried the best we can.
I've watched a lot of sawmills. That was the simplest ,plainest explanation of quarter sawed lumber...👍
Thank you, we try to keep things simple and straight to the point around. No messing around. Thanks for the feedback
He seems like a good teacher to learn safety and operation procedures!!!
appreciate what y'all doin. Wish you'd do a series on how to get decent results from a budget mill on small logs.
god bless you sir oak deserves to be quartersawn
Thank you sir. I agree 100%
Oh, finally I see someone who know how to quatersaw lumber !

Q-sawn, almost a lost art. Glad to see someone is keeping it alive!
Ohhh man I love quartersawn lumber!!!!
That’s the way to go with hardwoods!
Beautiful I did not know that red oak had ray fleck, like white oak.
Thank you for the video.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you, hope you enjoyed the video!
I love the grain and stability of quarter sawn oak. All oaks.
The last house I built before retirement was completely done with 1/4 white oak flooring except the bathrooms. With maple trim and interior window wood. Absolutely beautiful, the perfect way to quit.

Ive always loved quarter sawn oak.
I believe Quarter sawn hard woods is the way to go.
Nice looking wood. We mill so much oak at the hunting camp- it’s crazy to see the beautiful qs wood that’s used for bridge decking and small water crossings.
Beautiful! I bet that smells amazing.
Smellls likeee moneyyyy to me👍🏼 but, yes it smells amazing to.
That's a great looking piece of quater sawn. Would make some awesome book matched veneers.
Definitely! Thanks for watching
Very nice rayfleck showing already!
Thank you, that was the goal. To try and keep the medullary rays showing.
Finally fully understand "quarter sawn oak"
That’s great!
yes thank you, I too never completely grasped it, now I do much appreciated
@@ricknelson5493uiiioo
lol, I just said/posted same thing.
Qrt saw WHITE oak is my favorite wood to build with but I do love some reds too
Beautiful tree and equally beautiful lumber.
Thank you!
A beautiful cut and grain truly spectacular. Good advice
Thank you!

I have always seen the phrase/label "quarter-sawn" and while i had a general idea of it, seeing it done sure helps.
I always wondered why most furniture lumber is NOT quarter sawn? If I were a sawyer, I'd make as much quarter sawn lumber as possible. Its a better, more stable board to build with.
I do a lotta quarter sawing myself... takes longer... but you get better lumber... God bless
Those figured inside cuts. Nice.
Yes, thanks!
I love working with White Oak
Best way to do it. Most people make it so complicated
That’s for sure. Just gotta do it the simple way.
Awesome can’t wait to see more
Thank you.
He splained it well.
Thank you
Beautiful!!
Thank you!
I know this type is more expensive but when that furniture maker is buffing out the last coat of finish its all worth it! Red oak is my favorite.
Alot of work. But well Worth it. Period i been around. Sawing all my. Life as my Daddy. Ran. Sawmills. All his Life
Beautiful pattern 🎉
Thank you
That's going to make some beautiful flooring.
It’ll also make beautiful furniture or any woodworking project.
Gorgeous wood
Agree 100%!
Well done!!
Thank you 🙏
Gotta love it. Outstanding gentleman
Thank you, we enjoyed quarter sawn these beautiful red oak!
Gorgeous
Thank you
How often does that blade need honing/sharpening/replacing?
We tend to use 2 different brands of blades for this mill. With hard woods as you see in this clip. I’m using a brand new turbo 7 blade. Tends to take 8 to 10 hard wood logs for it to get dull. About 3 or 4 sharpening. The blade will start splitting or break in mid cut.
Thanks for the feedback
Nice work
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thank you 🙏
Did you center the pith? Goes in at the pith but comes out a couple inches below....
You have hydraulic toeboards, why not level the pith to maximize your qs lumber?
I noticed the same thing
My Dadfy is part of Louisiana. Sawmill. History as his Picture is at Longleaf Sawmill Museum he left. Longleaf to go to Powell Lumber in Lake Charles. Louisiana. Rip. Daddy
Beautiful work guys
Thank you very much!
Looks like it made lots of rift and a little quarter. Missed the heart too much opening up to get the fullest figure. You got to line up the heart in both ends of the log.
Nice
Thanks
quarter sawn...???
ummmm... luthiers going to love you, for sure ❤
Who’s luthiers?
Why half-sawn,more yield? Less quality? I've always heard 1/4 sawn is better quality and prettier grain. True?
Nice wood bro
Appreciate it
Some people still know how to work on something worthwhile
Thank you. We try to do the best we can
where U from ? Liverpool ??
That's a decently old tree especially as slow growing that oak is to reach that size.
This is why they need old large trees.
Exactly 👍🏼
Why not level the pith in the half-cut? I get you're going to cut it out anyway, but looks like you've got 6 inches of board with a diagonal pith running the length, and grain around it that wraps and will never be quatersawn.
We have lots of oak trees here but i dont think there is one that straight within 50 miles of me.
Yes, client said it came out of his yard. That he was clearing out A few months ago
Not what I thought quarter sawing was. I thought you cut it into quarters, then put the bottom of the "V" down and cut vertical boards, then square off the new sides.

The look of quarter sawn oak was unique. Now you can get a similar look with plywood, reducing the need for quarter sawn.
very much Common Sense good video
We try to use a little bit of common sense and also, “ work smarter, not harder”.
The size of the log and the Cants later are different than the you should do...Ya took the easy way out!!! The logs goes to a Hexagon or a Octagon... Of course it take planning to do the this.. But every turn of the cant is Quarter Sawed then... around the juvenile wood!!!!
Finally! Someone who can run a camera AND knows the easy way to quarter saw.
No need to do a bunch of propping the cants and all that contortionism!
Haha. I could do better with my camera skills. But, I’m still learning as I go with filming. & sawing lumber. We appreciate you watching and for the feedback. Thank you 🙏
I can smell this video
Haha 😂
Nice mill, beautiful lumber.👍
Thank you 🙏
Yeah, uh, I herd dat.
Uh huh.
They don't make trees like that anymore
Finally
Pour water on it to show us the grain
I’ll try to do it next time.
😅in Deutschland heißt das Kreuzholz.👍 👍🇩🇪

That is rift oak
It’s 50/50
The way they are sawing, each quarter produces 2 true quartersawn boards, from there they become more and more riftsawn.
Tiger Ray
Some people call it pith rays, tiger rays. But, the proper name for it is medullary rays.
That's closer, but it still NOT true quarter sawn. But it's better than most
That’s not true quarter sawn lumber!
It’s haft and haft. Some is rift, Some is quarter sawn.
That isn't proper quarter sawn.
Not all of it was quarter sawn. What was quarter sawn was the very best of the log the rest had to be rift sawn
If it's red oak then quarter sawing is not what to do
What the way to go then?
Rift sawn
Some of it is rift sawn, some is quarter sawn.
Y’all take your shoes off and set a spell! Cause California is the place you otta be! Swimming Pools and movie stars! Guess no one here will know what’s this is from!
Red oak is doodoo
Sometimes
Complete waste of time..😅
Some people might say it is.. but at the end of the day. You’ll be doubling your profit. And I think it’s worth the time to cut it, stack it, and dry it. This is the mentality of a hillbillies. WOW
But we don’t have any hills around the house 🤔. Thanks for watching
nothing like seeing those flecks in that q- sawed oak👍
I can't understand what they're saying
