Blender 2.82 - Rigify to Unity Tutorial - How to Export a Rigify Character and Import it into Unity

  • In this tutorial I will go through how I install an addon to Blender 2.82 to export a Rigify character and import it in Unity. I go through installing the addon, preparing the rig for Unity, parenting the character to the rig, exporting to Unity. I also describe the differences between Generic vs Humanoid rig settings in Unity with pros and cons (such as bone stretch / squash, retargeting, IK, performance). Then we'll set the rig up as a Humanoid in Unity and apply a simple walk cycle. Finally, a quick conversion to Generic rig typ and changing the walk animation to use root motion to propel the character forward.
I hope this video can help you out getting your Rigify character in Blender 2.82 / 2.83 to work in Unity 2019 and 2020.
If you want to see how I modeled the characters in this video and how I animated the walk cycle, check out this video:

I mention a noise reduction plugin in this video, and joking aside, it actually works pretty good! I use it as a VST plugin in Premiere while editing to remove the drying cabinet that was running in the background =)

Being a Unity developper, and a new user of Blender, I've struggled for days to find a way to export correctly a Rigify armature from Blender to Unity. This tutorial is perfect and is the first real video explanation that makes this process understandable and simple, especially regarding the "__init__" tip that solves the problem of not having the add-on button appear in Blender 2.8X.

When I export the rig directly it will export it without the head bone thus making the character unusable, so I need to link the two rigs and export the original somehow (the original meta-rig which I will use for the export to Unity linked to the generated rig which I use for animating it)

At 10:05 I believe you can just check looptime, go to the next animation, then select looptime again and repeat. I don’t think you need to click apply for every single animation; you just need to apply at the end.

When you go test the rig in Unity in the temporary scene it's most likely dark in there because there is no light source. If you click the light bulb icon above the scene view window it will disable lighting effects and make everything light up. Oh and great tutorial, this is going to help me a lot!

This is such a great tutorial, I'm glad to have my root motion working thanks to you Stefan. You are an inspiration for indie developers, I look forward to seeing you on the Tube again. Also there's some comments about the "Prepare for Unity" button not showing in Blender, I had the same issue but ended up using the Unity to Rigify asset from the Unity Asset Store. It's a free asset and it is more ideal for my situation as that is when I want the WTG bones removed anyway.

You're welcome! Still some rotational issues that we have to live with I think. I tried to flip the rig so X rotation is correct, but it breaks things. Using separate actions in Blender is amazing(!) I think. When you import in Unity all the animations will automatically be defined nicely with correct number of keyframes etc. I usually disable NLA during export as well, but that depends if you have any NLA stuff that you want to bring in as well. Otherwise, I keep the animation settings in the FBX default.

Hi Impheniza, just stumbled upon you're channel, awesome content! I'm working on a fast paced 2.5D platformer with only two movements, one of which being a jump. No I'm grinding my gears (and making foolish attempts) on the following idea/question: does it make sense to keep the jumping animation in blender in a way that the feet always stay close to Z=0 and let Unity later on handle all gravity since the distance of the jump will be fixed and as it is high paced I can't "wait" for the character collider to fall down again within the motion (if that makes sense) as well as I think it looks kinda weird applying a jump movement through both Unity scripting and a motion through animation. I already tried fixing the jump height in Blender, but it's too unprecise for my needs.
Sorry for that long comment/question, hope you have an idea, since I'm slowly running out of those, haha.
    KR, cheers from Germany,
    Marcel

What's your opinion on starting the animation on the crossover frame instead? The benefit being that if you just interpolate from an idle animation to the walking one it would more smoothly shift into and out of the walk cycle.

Regarding noise cancelling, you can do that in Audacity quite easily, just:
    1. Record a 5 second "silence" at the start (or end) of your video.
    2. Mark the 5 second silence in Audacity
    3. Effect / Noise Reduction, click Get Noise Profile
    4. Select entire clip
    5. Effect / Repeat Noise Reduction
There's a few settings, but I never have to bother with those, feel free to check them out.
If there's still some noise in the clip then select another part of the clip where it's supposed to be silent (shorter time works as well if necessary) and repeat it.
Should some new noise source happen (like neighbour starting to mow the lawn) then pause for a few seconds during the recording and jump cut past that, using that part to remove the new background noise.

3:02 I'm getting a lot of this. So much so that it feels impossible to unwind. Is there a better solution? Or a better case of setting up so it doesn't happen?

For the root motion, instead of using your finger to track the feet, you could use the 3D cursor, and at each step snap the model to keeping the offeset, just make sure that the cursor is at the foot location, and that the feet is the active part

That is a great suggestion - I wish I could pin two tweets! Thank you for suggesting this - much better than my method of fingerprinting the monitor.

I‘m currently at 11:42 and have to pause to comment. Damn thanks for the script, it‘s absolutly annoying to do this over and over again and i like to import a charakter sometimes when it‘s not completly done, to see if it fits the scenary. Really will save me a Ton of Time and Stress!

Actually you can change all of the desired animations to loop and then hit apply for all at once (you will still need to check it one at a time but you don't have to hit apply each time)

Thank you. Have never rigged with rigify in blender. I want to rig a cartoon helicopter to just spin the top propellor then import to Unity. Do I rig the character with rigify then use your rigify to unity ?

I feel like I've missed a video before this or something. At 2:50 abouts you say you had an animation before? But that didn't happen in the video. So now I don't know if I should maybe make a super basic rig first and animate it first or something.

What steps do one perform if one had already applied the meshes to the rig + weightpainted? (I.e. I don't want to redo the weight painting)
