The answer is it never stops. People with this opinion seem to always want an apology and to be a victim. They don’t want equality they want superiority.

Both are a lie. I don't want your damn apology because the I'll treatment is never going to stop. I want my people to get the reparations owed to them and for nonblacks to quit making excuses as to why we don't deserve it. The fact that it upsets you so much lets me know that you know we do deserve reparations. It's not a handout. It's what this country owes us. And it will only stimulate the country's economy for those who think all we're going to do is spend it. Isn't that what money is for, at least partly?

Screw the "move on from the past" tropes. The fact is reparations make absolutely no sense. An person who isn't a victim of a transgression is owed money from a person who isn't responsible for that transgression? It doesn't make any sense under any criteria, including legal ones. Civil claims are always the exact opposite: a specific person is the victim of a specific transgression by a specific person, and thus deserves compensation.

Today's generation shouldn't be blamed for what our forefathers did. It doesn't mean that we are all bad. The young black generation are not treated like their ancestors were (thank goodness). We should never forget history (good or bad), but aren't there enough problems in the world which we should be trying to solve. E.g. poverty, climate change, better recycling etc. etc.

Honestly I'm tired of the black vs white debate over a form of slavery that happened ages ago. However slavery still exists, its just been modernized as taxes, bills, laws, penal codes, etc. Americans and many others are forced to pay to live in society. If we choose not to partake in society and live freely we're put in prisons thus creating forced labor. If we haven't "paid our debts" then for some stupid reason it falls to our descendants who would eventually suffer the same fate. That's textbook Chattel Slavery definition. I won't be subjecting my lineage to such a fate. Its time to unite the people.

And yet today's British taxpayers, who had no personal involvement with slavery, were on the hook until recently for paying off British public debt incurred when the government compensated slaveowners in order to abolish and set slaves free. I'm northern Irish where we are still working things out and seeking to move forwards after pains inflicted in our community are still fairly recent and raw. If our focus now was on getting endless apologies and blame game we wouldn't get too far - speaking on a community level where we aree making progress. Unfortunately our government is a bit more stuck as an example of what I'm talking about. Doing those things would hurt me as an individual as well as community. Yes we remember, we teach the history and we focus on not repeating and getting stuck. But healing is something comes from within, not from relying on the external actions of others around of you.

What a great debate. I loved hearing the @no need to apologise” arguments! I and the overwhelming majority of people completely agree that slavery was a mistake análises centuries after it took place! But mistakes also are part of History! Douglas Murray touched exactly the center of the question: why is anybody blaming North Africans for enslaving southern Europeans especially in the Iberian Peninsula? And I add why is nobody demanding reparations from Mongolia for invading and slaughtering Asians, Indians, Eastern Europeans, etc.and all the terror caused by Genghis Khan?? Why would someone born more than 8 centuries later have to pay for something he has nothing to do with?? This reparation thing is just ludicrous and completely idiotic and unjust in my view!
    History is history!!!

  • @michaeltunnicliffe4935

You should not be expected to apologise for the actions of a known relative such as a parent, a sibling or a child. Let alone ancestors you never met, you don't know the names of and who you know so little about that you can't even be sure they did the things they are being accused of. I will apologise for my actions. If I enslave someone, I will apologise for that. But I'm not apologising for something a unknown ancestor may or may not have done. And this is exactly why it can be a bad thing to apologise. I think of someone like Ainsley Harriot who went on who do you think you are and found out that he had a slave owning ancestor. But because he is black, people like this Paula who are so ignorant to history, would expect me (a white man who has no evidence to suggest he has a family history of slavery), to apologise to Ainsley Harriot (descendant of slave owners) just because he is black. America is so much more muddled than Britain too. These ideas seem to always originate in America, where people are so mixed racially, that there are many millions of people who would have a family history of being slaves and owning them. Where there are millions of black people who could not have been descended from slaves because their families arrived in America after slavery was abolished. And they would blame white men who again, may have arrived after abolition. If we are to accept that reparations are needed and apologies are justified, we would need to have EVERYONES family history researched because otherwise, there is a real possibility that people with no history of slaver ownership will be giving money to people who had slave owning ancestors. Then we would only be committing injustice in the 21st Century. And this is all despite my original point which was simply this. I don't give a fuck if my ancestors owned slaves. I didn't. My parents didn't. My Grandparents didn't. I know this because I can ask them. And my Grandparents have parents and grandparents who they know didn't own slaves. Anything past that, is unknown but so far removed i don't even know people who knew them. I will not be held responsible for the actions of complete strangers, even if they are my ancestors.
