Jonathan Crane developed an interest in human fears and phobias in his youth. This was due to being abused by his fanatically religious grandmother, as well as being mistreated by other teens because of his appearance. Eventually becoming a Professor of Psychology and psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, Dr. Crane soon began conducting experiments on his students and patients. Eventually, his obsession with fear became dangerous, resulting in his dismissal from the profession and entry into a life of crime. Join www.WatchMojo.com as we explore the comic book origins of Dr. Jonathan Crane, otherwise known as the Scarecrow.
Scarecrow is so underrated...
wasn't he a main villain in one of the arkham games?
I disagree, because I'm not afraid of him, but I just don't wanna disrespect my favorite batman villain.
Pyro_Fuziøn Arkham Knight
No nigga, he's in every fucken Arkham game
@@Daniel-js2dk not Arkham City and Origins
Scarecrow is so cool because he uses batman's greatest advantage against him. Fear.
fear xD
SwagDonkeyGaming
Slenderman could've done a better job.
Scarecrow used his fear gas so many times, he himself is immune to feeling fear. There is only 1 thing that can make him feel fear, and take a wild guess what it is
@@bbgunz1705 He's only scared of Batman
Scarecrow copy's Spiderman villain,Mysterio
Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow=PURE GOLD.
Agreed
True
😩😫
I wished that scarecrow was the main villain of batman begins, more screen time and with a more scary design with brown ripped armour and hay hair with a horrifying mask.
Scarecrow is by far the best and most inteliigant of all the villians who seems to always test batman to his most deepest fears and all his being. Which makes the scarecrow the best villian and my favorite char in all of the batman series, even more so then batman himself.
hes my fav too!
Hugo strange?
The Riddler?
the Riddler is the smartest batman villain but scarecrow is the fear creator while my favorite joker is the perfect villian for the Batman
Killer moth?
There is nothing to fear but fear itself
*giant man-eating spiders
Phobophobia, the fear of fears
There is nothing to fear but fear himself
"There's is no greater fear than fear of the unknown" H. P. Lovecraft
Scarecrow's one of my favorite supervillains nest to The Joker.
Scarecrow: "Do you want to see my mask" Joker: "Do you want to know how i got these scars"
Fun fact: Scarecrow became a member of the Sinestro Corps at one point.
Really
Connor Gellman Yeah. several other dc heroes and villians became members of different lantern corps for a while.
Yeah Flash was a blue lantern, Wonder Woman a star sapphire, Lex Luthur an orange lantern, Mera a red lantern, and Atom a member of the indigo tribe
And also a champ from League of Legends!
Leave it to A Bomb to give DC facts.😂😂😂👍
Every Batman villan backstory ever: "As a result he turned to a life of crime"
That's ALL human villains
@@yoshikagekira5196 not Joker though
@@thedude8457 that's debatable depending on which version of the Joker were talking about
'' Would you like to see my Mask? '' I love it!
DarknuttyAndKilami1 oddly enough since Scarecrow wears a potato sack on his head
***** what's the matter, don't have anything relevant to say?
Scarecrow looks so badass in Arkham Knight. :3
So true his best incarnation yet.
That's probably my favorite incarnation of him.
fucking king, Scarecrow is the Einstein of the rogue gallery!
+Adam Corbett yes indeed
yeah this face the glass eye
the best disign of him i've ever seen
the batman begins scarecrow was awesome actor
Ah, Cillian Murphy. Yea, he was great... haha, I love how they put him in all three Nolan movies
yeah, i love that
Kayla Buzgo DEATH BY EXILE! :P
Tommy Fucking Shelby
Scarecrow is one of my top 5 favorite Batman villains. You can learn a lot from him.
In my opinion Scarecrow is Batman's second greatest villain.
Damn right. But joker will always be the best
Just a Wizard lizard in a blizzard I know.
I agree 100percent
PeriDiamond Thanks :)
+Super Gamer i notice its usually the mature and intellectual fans that don't over look scarecrow, 95% always miss his potential, most underrated character.
Scarecrow is the reason why I view Batman begins as the best in the trilogy.
"And at the end of fear... Oblivion!"
He and Killer Croc are my favorite! I loved them in Arkham Asylum and awaiting his return in Arkham Knight! :D
Croc and scare crow are the best by far
***** Gotta love Riddler. I am really hoping that the next Batman franchise they decide to crank out will have either Riddler, Killer Croc, or Black Mask. The Scarecrow will always be one of my favs though.
They are not gonna make another batman franchise it is gonna be superman(video game only),flash,or green arrow
jakob simas Well, they are coming out with a Suicide Squad film that includes Killer Croc, along with many other villains, so yeah, they are doing films, but likely not franchises…
***** Also, the Electrocutioner but who really cared about him. I always thought it would be cool the other way around if Croc came back and killed Scarecrow. It would make for a good ending. I found Arkham Knight to be extremely lackluster and boring. Sure the graphics were fantastic and the batmobile was fun to use but everything else was off. It didn't even feel like I was playing an Arkham game.
hoping to see him in the next Batman game
you are
I'm hoping he's in Injustice 2.
rw: he is in injustice 2 dude.
And voiced by one of the many faces of horror, Robert Englund
rw:who's robert englund?
Man, nobody cares for Scarecrow in Nolan's trilogy. Joker and Bane seem to stand out on a superstar level. Scarecrow is pretty much in obscurity.
Because he didn't do jack shit in Batman Begins.
He did SOMETHING at least, but nobody seems to care about em. You should probably watch the movie before you make a comment like that.
Introgauge .C Are you sure you watched Christopher Nolan's movie? I recommend you visit your local Blockbuster and actually check it out.
You should probably go see your local therapist, cause nobody should be that in love with a fictional character.
Introgauge .C This is coming from the person raging about the fact that a fictional character isn't getting enough attention. And what fictional character am I in love with?
The Scarecrow is so much better than The Joker. The Jokers Comics may be better but that is only cause Scarecrow isn't given enough time to fully make him great. I mean come on, Scarecrow is FEAR INCARNATE. Which is what Batman is aswell. Also Scarecrow made himself Who he is, unlike the Joker which his outcome was an accident.
SuperJesusJackson I think the scarecrow is worse than the joker since he mentally tortures people with their greatest fears. He is truly evil.
Exactly
Scarecrow is definitely better than Joker
FinJproductions that’s what makes him more scary and more evil.Making him a better villain.By better we mean who is the better villain not who is the much good out of the two
@@OrangeUtan1 yeah. Most of Scarecrows victims go crazy or die from fear. That's just horrifying
Would you like to see my mask?
Your mask looks dope
Scarecrow in my opinion is one of the greatest villains ever. Fear can get to anyone more than anything else. and who better to use it in their victims than the scarecrow?
Crane should've played a bigger role throughout Nolan's series
They really didn't do his character justice, neither did the Harley Quinn show
@optatertot that’s not an excuse
@optatertot again that’s not an excuse. Parody or not, they still could’ve done more with his character
Cillian Murphy really excelled as scarecrow
"Would you like to see my mask"
Best line from Batman Begins
Cillian Murphy's portrayal of the Scarecrow in Batman Begins was amazing ! :)
Scarecrow is my second favorite Batman villain.
Who is your favourite?
@@davidstancu905 Joker
Okay
@@mar2fire lol like who else can it be am I right
@@slugtwins3688 Yeah bitch
Scarecrow: Would you like to see my mask? Daniel Bryan: YES!
I can't wait for Batman Arkham Knight! Call me crazy but I prefer Scarecrow from Joker and I think he is going to be a better main villain!
I knew I would find someone like minded in this video's comment section. If I said that anywhere else they would think we were crazy. I don't want some dumb plot twist with joker being alive. I want the Fucking Scarecrow as the Fucking main villain.
Ryan Geoghagan I know me neither
we'll the games out today so go find out if he is as good as before
Ryan Geoghagan
I agree! While the Joker may be batman's "opposite" and made to be ironic to batman's seriousness, scarecrow's identity with fear relates SO much more to batman! Batmans entire persona is based off a past phobia.
I think scarecrow is by far the best batman villian because he uses one of the most effective wepons ever and that he is extremely interesting because of his obsession with human phobia I still have trouble comprehending how batman beats him seeing as he has to fight his worst fear to do so.
Playing his levels in Arkham Asylum was so freaking scary.
Arkham Knight Scarecrow is back !!!
Tyler Myers he looks amazing.
Tyler Myers Croc messed him up
Scarecrow in Batman Begins was great, even though he didn't have a lot of screen - time. Also i think that Scarecrow's fighting skills are highly underrated, since only TAS seemed to actually make him appear as a physical threat to Batman. The portrayal of Scarecrow in Arkham Asylum was terrific too, but still I prefer the one in TAS. I think he is one of the major villains to Batman, since he challenges the endurance of Batman's psyche, and he is almost an equally dangerous psychological foe as the Joker. But Joker still beats him, since he got no fears.
After the Joker, Scarecrow is my personal favorite fictional villain
I loved Scarecrow in Arkham Asylum, Arkham Knight and Batman Begins. But I wish they would make a batman movie with him as the main villain and not just a side character.
The Scarecrow and the Mad Hatter never gets any show time it's always The Joker.
Well not on movies but they are in video games
*****
Do you bealive that he will be on Arkham Knight?
*****
No way!
*****
Beacuse I saw a tweet from someone that was working in Rockstedy he said that "He" will not not not not not be in the game
*****
I would like to see some Joker easter egg
i loved the Crane appearance in dark night rises!
I feel as though the actor in Batman Begins portrayed him wonderfully.
My second favorite villain in anything ever
I prefer the arkam knight version of his costume
***** yeah i agree i wouldve prefered it if he wore something
I always liked the way he looked in DC universe online.
The thing that's makes the scarecrow such a awesome villain is that unlike the joker, two face or even mr freeze and the riddler, there's nothing mentally wrong with Crane he's just plain evil which makes him less sympathetic and awesome as a villain
He pretty much sees Gotham citizens as his quinea pigs
"In blackest day, in brightest night,
Beware your fears made into light.
Let those who try to stop what's right
Burn like my power Sinestro's might!"
I'm awesome.
Sure buddy sure! Green arrow would kill u!
Ummm not if he's shitting his pants imaging his worst nightmare.
man if your fear gas is SOOO powerful how come batman has been able to endure it with SHEER WILLPOWER!?!? Plus superman smokes that stuff and it DOSENT EVEN GET HIM HIGH!!!
Deadpool Central74 because that's what batman was trained to do. ra's al ghul said that they had purged his fear in the league of shadows. did you watch batman begins?
of course I did but beyond your "terrifying" fear gas u r nothing! try going 5 minutes with superman then u will have my respect!
"I am fear incarnate" - Scarecrow
My favorite is when he gets a Sinestro corp ring :)
The master of fear with a yellow power ring that feeds on fear.
Unstoppable.
I loved the voice Jeffrey Combs provided in the later episodes of Batman the animated series. I wish they could have done more then just two episodes with him especially with the re-design.
Cillian Murphy did a very good scarecrow so it should be no surprise he has become the most recognizable depiction of scarecrow
Scarecrow obviously borrows heavily from H.P. Lovecraft
+I'm An EC3 Guy Headcannon he loves HP Lovecraft
Scarecrow is underrated. He's a bad ass villain. Fans talk about joker or bane but forget about this man. Who's a very important villain when it comes to psychology.
I can see Scarecrow leading the Sinestro's corp.
Cillian Murphy as scarecrow is HOT! :)
2:49 Imagine if he told that to the Joker at the ending of the video. The Joker would go like "Do you wanna know how I got these scars?"
Scarecrow was definitely nothing to play with in the batman arkham game. Those moments and levels were memorable and distinctive to say the least
Agreed, I LOVE that Scarecrow design the most!
ive read a comic and according to it scarcrow was abuses by hes father not grandmother
your probably right
now I think he is best recognized for Arkham knight
Scarecrow is the only villain that I want to see in the DCEU
Scarecrow is the real deal in Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, from Batman Begins till The Dark Knight Rises, he is in a badass scene
Scarecrow is hands down my favorite villain :)
I know Arkham Knight has its flaws, but Scarecrow's appearance and his voice actor were actually top-notch, imo. The way he taunts you over the PA system just when you think you've had a victory against him really starts getting under your skin after a while
What is it with psychologists from arkham asylum becoming supervillains?
Haha yeah harley too :-D
+hayden orr Possible passive-aggressive DC payback, for mandatory institution of the comics code ;)?
Scarecrow is so underrated he's my fav villian after the joker Of course !!
Frasier won’t be too pleased when he finds out about this
Bane: When batman is in ashes, you have my permission to die.
I like to come back to these old watch mojos. The music, narrators and over all content is so nostalgic.
I love Scarecrow's design in Arkham Asylum. It just really suits the character.
He isn't the only bullied person who turned villain. Killer Croc comes to mind as well.
Scarecrow should've been the host of "Fear Factor." He'd be perfect!
They could've done that on the Harley Quinn show, but yet they needlessly killed him off
Jeffrey Combs and John Noble are the best voice actors for Scarecrow.
Scarecrow almost comes head to head with batman. Fear vs Fear
At the end of fear... Oblivion.
So you're saying...Scarecrow created Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?
+elitebelt I wish
Scarecrow Is TOTTALLY my MOST FAVORITE VILLAIN EVAR.
If the new Batman's gonna have a new Scarecrow, Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach from Watchmen, Freddy from rebooted Nightmare on Elmstreet) should be casted. He's got the built, scary and intimidating.
I had forgotten all about Scarecrow
Bane: Would anyone like to see Gotham's reckoning?
The Arkham Asylum Scarecrow costume was the best,it was truly scary and that guy had a badass laugh.
"I said my drugs would take you places... I never said they'd be places you'd want go."
The rebooted Scarecrow from the second season of the animated series was so much cool looking and sounding.
The redesign for The Scarecrow in the last couple seasons of Batman: TAS was just bad ass. I am disappointed that you all didn't at least show it.
Fun fact I made my own design for scarecrow,
This version wears a sewn up rag doll outfit but also a plague doctor mask and coat (because since he’s a doctor)
But it also has fear toxin not only flowing through his veins, allowing him to build his immunity faster. But also has a scythe modified to infect any one with his toxin, (one slice = worst nightmare).
scarecrow was one of my most favorite Batman villains, and yet one of the most terrifying villains
Don't forget scarecrow has helped batman in the past
I agree with everything you said. But imagine walking in a dark alleyway on your own in the middle of the night, let's just say you wouldn't want to meet him.
and yet at the same time strangely awe-inspiring
He's an old Batman villain. He's a villain, but in the comic I read he was helping Batman out for a while. He's going to be the main antagonist in the upcoming Batman show, Beware The Batman. He's obscure, and wasn't used in comics for a long while which is why lots of people don't know about him. The comic I read him in was either Batman: Knightquest or Knightfall.
Joker's fear used to be being normal, but that went away after a while.
When I was little, my mom recored the animated series for my dad, but my bro and I watched them a lot, too. The Scarecrow was the only villan that scared the crap out of me, no matter how many times I had seen the same episode over and over. Even today, he and the Joker are the two Batman villans that make me the most uncomfortable..
Fun fact: after repeated exposure to his own formula his own fear was deadened, and he fought at least in part to elicit fear in himself using Batman.
I wrote an entire paper on the workings of the amygdala, phobia, and fear for my behavioral psych class based on my love for this character. Love The Scarecrow
You finally did it!! Thanks
Scarecrow may not’ve used well but when he’s good, he’s REALLY good!
Finally you did it !!!
THANKS !!!!!
a few other things to add on, Scarecrow was one of the members of the Legion of Doom alongside villains such as Lex Luthor, Sinestro, Solomon Grundy, The Riddler, Gorilla Grodd, Toyman, Bizzaro, The Cheetah, Captain Cold, Black Manta, and Brainiac.
Scarecrow was also a member of the Sinestro Corps though his original yellow ring was snared by the Green lantern corps, he gained a yellow ring during Blackest Night as Sinestro's deputy when Sinestro's ring duplicated itself.
Scarecrow might be the most popular villain of the Arkham series video games
Can you do a supervillain origins of firefly/?
Scarecrow's attempts to drive Batman mad are kind of futile, since it's pretty clear Bats is already crazy. I mean, have you *seen* his outfit?!
Joker is that you?
Lolnoodles Nah, Mistah J's busy right now. The doctah is in, can I help you?
Calm down Harley Quinn
Scarecrow is really underrated i love what the Lego Batman Series and Injustice did with him
Bane: No, your punishment must be more severe.
CILLIAN!!!! XD
I think the Scare-gas is what puts him over the top, while his voice actor (Dino Andrade) does alright, the insane levels and visuals just make the AA one cooler
You forgot Batman has often defeated Scarecrow by using his own fear toxin against him.
I thought the quote was "Buyer beware. I said my compound would take you places. I never sayd they'de be places you wanted to go."
