I don’t know how this issue can even be fixed on Nintendo’s end, but it would be nice if there could be some sort of stealth patch to the game to fix this. Yes, It's a shame that they couldn't have allowed you to just get the promo cards, as has been done in previous re-releases. They did it for Pokemon Crystal with the Celebi event!

@@bewearstar9462 There are 2 specialty shops in Ages and Seasons that are known as the Advance Shops. The only way to access them is if you play Ages and Seasons in a GBA, they're locked with a closed door on GBC hardware. You can buy a special Advanced Ring and some Gasha seeds when you go to these shops, but Nintendo never unlocked the doors for eshop owners. It's the same for the 3DS versions as well. The only way you can get a 100% ring collection is by looking up a ring password online unless you happen to have a cartridge and port your password from that.

I remember reading articles that I think were on the Pokémon website that played up some printing errors in the Team Rocket expansion as intentional due to the "mischief of Team Rocket" or whatever. Little did I know how numerous were the actual errors as a result of gameplay translation.
Oh yeah, saw a lot of that as a kid. Saw a lot of game manuals call out easily performed glitches and bugs in Mario or Sonic, and describe them as "evil tricks from Bowser/Robotnik", encouraging you to watch out for them. I love to imagine the idea of causing a hard crash that makes you reset the game being a legitimate plot by Robotnik to stop Sonic once and for all.
I could have swore I got that Venusaur card as a kid. Pretty much everyone I hung out with in school had this game, so a lot of Popping was on the table. I'm probably just Madella Effect-ing myself, though
I have a weird memory of Nintendo handing it out like they did Mew and Celebi back in the day, but my old save file doesn't have it and I can't find any record of it ever happening online either so I guess I'm getting Mandela'd as well lol.
I have European versions of the game so now I know why Down + A doesn't work. Nice! I'm actually currently in the process of slowly grinding up the chips in GB2 to get the phantom cards, because I want a 100% save on there. I didn't actually know these two are phantom cards, so I could probably just leave them for last, since at least in the first game, they don't show up as missing in the menu's card total. Grinding those 2000 points takes quite a while...
I tried it yesterday and the game just froze. I thought they decided to fix that one glitch for the Switch Online version but it was because I played European version.
Not sure if the Aus copies are any different but Down+A works in our version. Maybe 1 out of 100 times it'll freeze, but otherwise it works perfectly fine
Heya! I reached out to you on Twitter about this exact issue the other day, and mentioned my discord group had looked into the code to see what the issue is. Like you said, it seems there's no legitimate way to get the Phantom Venusaur, but we're now looking into possibly exploiting some sort of ACE to try to add the card to inventory. We've even put up a $300 bounty on anyone who can find/come up with a glitch/method to do exactly this. It doesn't seem like Nintendo will bother fixing this issue themselves.
@@nickstuimlucamatef399that's just as dumb a question. The real question is "Why would Nintendo fix this? They didn't develop it." When you're re-releasing something (which this has been twice now including on their modern system) it is perfectly possible to make modifications. Even lazy ass Game Freak did so with the Gen 1 and 2 games and updated it to work with wireless communication which was not a thing the games did until late Gen 3. While someone else could do it, it makes more sense if the actual original dev is making the changes and the problem here is that Hudson Soft is no longer in business. Now granted technically that means Konami, who bought them out, likely has the ability to do so but it's also Konami who doesn't even let you transfer their own game save files on the Switch, they're so cheap and lazy.

I had the Venusaur back in the day but only through using an Xploder cheat cartridge to get it (and the Mew). Never knew anybody else with the game so Card Pop was never an option for me.
This game was such a huge part of my childhood, maybe even more so than the mainline games. I remember spending an entire summer at my grandparents house playing this game every day. I didn't know anything about deck building back then, so I just went through the majority of the game using mostly the deck I started with, only adjusting a few things like adding potions and swapping mons in and out depending on the gym. Magnemite and Ponyta lines were pretty much my go to, now looking back I'm convinced I only beat the grandmasters by some insane stroke of luck, cause it sure wasn't skill or game knowledge. XD

5:12 As someone who used to play on a PAL version of the game this was honestly like a trigger. So many bad memories of my game crashing came flooding back - I always thought it was because my GB was faulty or something.
i vaguely remember wanting to make a "starter deck" back when playing this but never did because i''d never found a venusaur, and thus never used bulbasaur or ivysaur (i was a purist as a kid)
Oh damn, never knew this. I card popped a bunch with friend making new games to try for them too. However I did have one of the cheat devices that let you write custom AR codes while in game, and figured out how to give myself the cards eventually, so it's crazy to now learn it wasn't even possible and I was one of the few people who ever got to play the original with the card.
I've had success with the down A glitch in the European version. It makes me have to mash B a few times in a short menu loop sometimes (always ending up back in battle if it doesn't work) but hasn't caused a single crash.
If I remember right, phantom Venusaur was not intended to be a available through normal play. It was something that they had special promo versions made that could card pop at events in order to get it. I believe there were a few people I knew who got them there, but I don't know for sure.
Not on topic, but my question I was hoping to get answered is: Can we expect/alter our chances of the rare card we get from the packs? I'm missing Nidoking from Evolution and Zapdos and Dragonite from Mystery. I felt one time after I beat the grand masters, when I battle someone who will give out a pack which could hold the missing card(s) I need they gave me one; for example I was previously missing Dragoinare from Mystery set and right after beating the grand masters I batteled someone who I knew gave out a Mystery pack, and they gave me the missing card. Probably coincidence, but wanted to know if there are any legit ways (not hacks) to know how to better your odds at geting the cards you still need. 1 Evo, 2 Mys, 4 Promo, 2 Phantom.

This is ludicrously depressing. I wanted the Phantom Venusaur so bad, because it leads to a hilarious deck--you run Venusaur Lv64 on the bench, then Vileplume as your active Pokemon, and you just use the Solar Power ability from the bench to clear the confusion. Alas, it can never be done :(
bUt I HaD pHAnToM VenUsAuR nah im kiddin from what i heard, the GBC emulator on the switch supports lua scripts (i.e. on-the-fly ROM patching) but i haven't heard of this issue getting fixed specifically. Stadium got some sort of graphical rendering update(??) so they ARE using the feature, but, who knows lol
Yes. All communication features work on the Switch version via online and local wireless. Keep in mind that online play is in private friends only rooms only. There are no public lobbies or random matchmaking.

Okay this is weird. I had the phantom venusaur card in my copy (it was my first card pop) there must be something being overlooked here. I'll see if I can find my old copy in storage
Unfortunately, old Game Boy games used batteries in order to keep the save data in the game alive. Chances are very likely that the battery is dry and you lost your save.

There's something we're still missing. I just dug out my old cart, and I have all 228, including Phantom Venusaur. I never owned a GameShark. I do not know how I got the Phantom cards, but I did.
Thinking back, I didn't know anyone else who had the game, so I couldn't have gotten the Venusaur through Card Pop. There must be some other in-game event that awards it.
I can't pull the down+A ... It goes into my cards in play and it bugs as I can't get out: pressing B will get out of my cards and automatically go into them again

U go to play online on game selection screen , invite ur friend to your game session load up the game and u both hit card pop hit a and viola
