Well well, a new Paraspective video. Eh, kinda. I realized I actually DID have some stuff I wanted to discuss with Pokémon Trading Card Game 2, so this is kind of a side video on the subject. Let's examine it.
TCG2 Paras/Parasect Only Challenge: • Paras and Parasect Onl...
Vending Blue Series (Part 1 of 4): • Pokémon Vending Cards:...
Title sequence, background, and Pallet Town remix by Joshua C. Griffin

I really wish the Pokemon TCG video game series continued. I feel like the DS would have been the perfect system to display the cards in your hand and would allow wi-fi battles.

@@adryanus9 Yeah, but screw playing either with the PTCG's absolutely garbage precon decks in the precon format _or_ people's super optimal metadecks that cost $100+. I just wanna be able to play a singleplayer game, with the possibility of multiplayer as an option should I want it, where I can battle and collect cards and build decks without being limited by daily quests and timers and other awful game design practices that things like PTCGO and Magic Online have.

But a $100 "super optimal metadeck" sounds like a wet dream for someone who plays MtG, where a good meta deck can run 10-20x that easily. Same with YGO, and I think meta Pokemon decks are only in that 100-200 range, which is phenomenal.

With the release of the GBA literally a week before TCG2 released, TCG2 was kind of perfectly positioned to be part of a special 2-in-1 edition. They would do those pretty consistently throughout the Game Boy Advance's lifespan.
Personally, I think they missed a serious trick in not continuing the pokemon tcg video games. There was SO MUCH opportunity for cross promotion, and card fight sims would have kept the TCG more on the casual Pokemon player's mind, for those people who liked the game but just didn't have the disposable income.

Something that I would like to highlight about the Game is the Rival:
In this game the Rival seems to have a "Character Development": Compared to the First Game, he is much nicer and treats you much better in comparison and he even goes directly to help on the island right at the beginning of the game On his own account, he also infiltrates Team GR and tries to enter the GR Castle and although he lost, he directly encourages you because he knows that you are the best of the two.
Obviously this is nothing special xd, but I think it's a nice touch that he went from a guy who constantly puts you down in the First Game to one that you could practically consider a Friend in the Second.

TCG2 is a phenomenal game. Sucks that it never had a proper release to North America.

I played an early version of a patch that was only partly translated, they were working on doing the whole thing. Basically everything essential to finishing the game had been converted to English (so dialogue explaining story progress, deck challenges, and stuff like that). I played most of that game, I want to say between 2012 and 2014. I then forgot about it until a few years later, and when I remembered later, couldn't find anything about the project I remembered, but I ended up finding an English ROM on a pretty popular site. At the time I assumed it was the finished version of the one I'd played a couple years earlier, but I guess maybe it wasn't? Idk.

  • @justsomejojo
    @justsomejojo ปีที่แล้ว +2

I recently played this for the first time! Maybe it's because I'm not doing so hot right now, but I actually really appreciated the story - yeah, it's ridiculous on the surface, but I kinda like how when you go to GR island, all of your opponents are just regular passionate cardbattlers - not some amalgamation of evil for the sake of evil grunts. Even Villicci himself seems to only want to play and have people play. Sure, it's kinda forceful, because all villains with decent motivations are villains because they take it too far, but he also says something to the effect of "it would be a shame to have these powerful cards collecting dust". Which, not gonna lie, isn't a bad motivation in a world fueled by the cardgame. The fact that in the postgame, Team GR members and Legendary Card islanders intermingle and play and talk with eachother is also pretty wholesome - and fitting, since even the hooded members turned out to just be regular players. It's nice. Every portrait now reacting to their draws and situations is also pretty humanizing imo. You also instantly know if they drew that last energy they need to bonk you, which is fun.
Gameplay-wise, this game's structure really fixed many of my issues. In the TCG, it so often only comes down to getting an advantageous type and then steamrolling (though there ARE some stoppers like flying electric cards). In TCG2, the irregular situation of the invasion, as well as most members having multicolor decks, made for a decent challenge. Not having easy access to farmable boosters early on also adds to the difficulty curve. When the game really opened up in the second half (when GR island becomes accessible) that genuinely felt freeing as way more cardbattlers were challengeable now.
I really really like this game. I purposely didn't watch TCG2 challenges yet and as a result, I was surprised by the game multiple times. It was very fun and I'm glad we got a fan translation. I just wish we got more Pokemon TCG videogames, because the Pokemon TCG in particular feels like such a good fit for AI opponents. The abundance of coin flips and volatile stun lock status effects would make for a salt mine against people imo, so I barely played it outside these GBC games.

this game is awesome i only played it for the first time last year, but being able to save like 30 decks means i can just follow any deckbuilding whim (dark machamp/dragonite deck, nidos, rhydon, big eggsplosion, only fat colorless) and not have to worry about it being worthy of staying as one of my four decks. lets me enjoy the card game in a way i could never afford as a kid (and don't care to afford now)

It's a shame that the Pokemon TCG never got a constant stream of video games like, say, Yu-Gi-Oh did. Those sorts of games are great time capsules to go back and experience what things were like at a specific point in time. And their frequent releases (until they eventually died off) means that there's a good stretch of Yu-Gi-Oh's history covered.

Hear me out. The pokemon TCG series lore is a bit odd. I think we're now at a point where it can be explained. So Ash is no longer in Pokemon right? What if Pokemon the TCG game is a video game in the anime universe. Here's my logic.
-Alot of the trainer cards involve people and moments in Ash's journey
-The game world makes no sense, that is to be expected; but even by usual standards of disbelief suspension, this one is a challenge. Relative to the anime however it is not too big a jump. I might go so far as to say that Pokemon TCG parodies the pokemon world in a not dissimilar way that GTA or Fallout parodies our own
-Ash is not a pokemon master, and probably never will be. Often these cards reflect things that are not game, anime or manga canon to the pokemon; but they're definitely the kind of things Ash might canonically believe. Like Gyrados being weak to water.
-There are no shortage of Pikachu variants.
Pokemon TCG was written and developed by Ash Ketchum after he concluded his adventures.

It is very much indeed. I used to play it in huge chunks and then come away from in to give me breathing space. But, I consider it among the best "free to play" games ever, for like 11 years it was completely free to enjoy, even if you didn't have those codes. I found a lot of enjoyment in earning new cards, doing the challenges, earning coins and buying a killer theme deck for those tourneys. Knowing how to play the trading market and trying all kinds of cool and experimental decks to get your wins was very rewarding. Having friends to play and trade with was icing on the cake.
The only thing that really bothered me about the game is the insane power creep of each new expansion forcing you to adapt and get more cards, but it's pretty easy to do for free ultimately.
I haven't read into what it's like now, but when it was announced, Live aimed to strip away unlimited cards, turning the game into a pay to win market, streamlining the experience, getting rid of a lot of the cosmetics from TCG, no friends, no TRADING.
I hope the original version of TCG Online never goes offline. And if it does, i'll be a very sad fan of it. Almost makes me wanna make a video about it because I dread the day I am told to convert my hard earned digital collection of cards into currency

7:45 interesting thing about team rocket, their crazy antics make sense if you view the theme of the main games as "The world through a child's eye". The whole game is set up to be viewed by a 10 year old and team rocket might be how a 10-year old boy imagines the yakuza/mafia: Evil people who look crazy and do evil stuff.
