The Gen 3 Roaming Legendaries Are Glitchy and Terrible

  • Today we take a deeper, more technical dive into some legendary Pokemon from the Gen 3 games, specifically Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Latios, and Latias. In their Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed and LeafGreen appearances, these Pokemon suffer from seemingly tiny glitches that can go the length of ruining the Pokemon entirely. Let's take a look!
Pokemon glitches and the like are always interesting to me, but diving into the context created by them and how they affect our playthroughs and stories with the games- that's what I LOVE! And this one has implications for any normal playthrough in gen 3 Pokemon, but also competitive, so it can definitely be far reaching.
Definitely got a little technical on this one, hope you still enjoyed it! I'm still figuring things out and experimenting with the medium.

These glitches have always been so funny to me. Not only are the roamers even harder to get than usual to the point of some of them being downright impossible if you let them Roar, if you do manage to catch them you get a Pokemon with absolutely horrible IV's as your reward. It's the biggest accidental middle finger.

I only cared about how cool they looked and power leveled my starter to level 100 so he could one-shot everyone else. I hated the Battle Frontier because it required me to actually plan and strategise instead of powering through everything with superior firepower.

@@danf7411 The video literally goes over this:
      - A Pokemon's Individual Values are stored within their data as a 32-bit integer value, in which only the first 30 bits of the value are used. 5 bits are used to store the Individual Value for each stat, which gives them their limit of 0-31.
      - The data for the roaming Latias/Latios/Entei/Raikou/Suicune is generated upon having their event flags triggered, to try and ensure you're fighting the exact same one each time you encounter them. The generation and storing of this data within the cartridge's SRAM, by itself, runs without issue.
      - Due to a programming oversight however, when you actually manage to successfully capture your roaming Pokemon, the game incorrectly copies the Individual Values within this stored data onto your newly-captured Pokemon -- it only copies the first byte (8 bits) of the value, leaving the remaining three bytes (24 bits) of it as zero.
      - As a result of the above, and due to the exact order the bits are interpreted as, this error effectively locks their Speed, Special Defense, Special Attack and Defense IVs to 0 and caps the Attack IV at 7. Only the HP IV ends up being copied in full. The only way of circumventing this error without patching the game itself is via external modifications to the save data to write new Individual Values to the Pokemon.
      - This error is only present within _Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed,_ and _LeafGreen._ It was fixed with the release of _Emerald._

It's funny because, as I had experience with Gen 2, I already knew how to hunt them. So when they roared, I looked at the Pokedex and found there was zero data. It made me reset and I thought they just downgraded and made roaming legendaries worse. So I never had a hard time hunting them, due to the fact I thought the roar bug was the standard. If they run, I also reset without even checking. So to this day, I thought even if they ran it made them impossible to catch. xD

I have a feeling that your channel is about to get a lot bigger very quickly. Your recent shorts were recommended to me, someone who has not watched Pokémon content in a good while. I remember I was at my sisters soccer game as a kid when I first encountered Raikou in FireRed. I kept tracking it, trying to ultimately catch it; until it used Roar. I checked the PokeDex and saw Area Unknown. I panicked and luckily turned off my game without saving. However, it wouldn’t be until my senior year of college twelve years later when I would ultimately find Raikou again and catch it. Shame it had bad stats.

On the note of catching legendaries theres one spot where two routes are together and you simply have to move one space to the side to change routes. I used that to my advantage since they change places whenever you change routes. Made catching them super fast. Probably had them all within an hour or maybe two.

A similar thing happened in gen 2 but never made it to cartridge. There was a cancelled event for the mythical Pokémon Sploink in which they used a unique calculation for your shiny odds based off of your trainer ID instead of the random chance. This made it functionally impossible to earn a shiny sploink from the event unless your trainer name was exactly "funnelkaek" however because this exceeded the maximum number of characters for your name, shiny Sploink would have been unobtainable.

If a game has roaming pokemon then you are saving the masterball for them and catching the box legendary the hard way.
Even without the roar glitch in gen 3, it can be incredibly tedious to chase them down. (The only roamers that felt cool to me were Entie and Raiku in HGSS, probably because they had no glitches, you could directly see their locations on the map, and you would keep bumping into them when you had no reasonable way of catching them.)

A year or two ago, I was playing through Pokemon UltraViolet (FireRed, but all 386 Pokemon of the time are obtainable with no tricks or trading), and found myself completely unable to find or even track Raikou in the Pokedex after my first encounter with him. I ended up having to hack the game and manually add Raikou as a spawn on Route 1, without ever knowing what had gone wrong. I don't remember specifically, but he must have used Roar on me and deleted himself. Thanks for the informative video!

  • @Yakes99
    @Yakes99 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Calling the legendaries "practically unusable" is quite the overstatement. When it comes to pokemon stats base stats are definitely much more important than IVs.
The legendary dogs all have a base stat total of 580, and both latios and latias have a base stat total of 600. Regardless of IVs, they are good pokemon.
Also, EVs have more of an effect on stats than IVs. For any given stat, the difference between a level 100 pokemon with 0 IVs in that stat vs. 31 IVs in that stat is +31, whereas the difference between a level 100 pokemon with 0 EVs in that stat vs. max EVs in that stat is +63.
The player still has full control over the EVs of the roaming legendaries.
So having bad IVs isn't at all ideal but it's not like it completely ruins the pokemon. They still outclass the majority of available pokemon, regardless of their bad IVs.

    I see
I didn't understand anything about the IV at all
The first time i found my legendary it was Raikou in Route 1, right after leaving Pallet Town
I never look any info on internet about any game, i always like to discover things by myself unless really really necessary
And i was really excited to discover how the legendary changes depending on the Starter you pick, even my friends didn't know about that
Now, i can't remember if the thing about losing track of the legendary happened to me because obviously, i wasn't able to catch it first try but i eventually got it and even traded with myself in Emerald, even to some hack roms like Moemon

There is a way you can try to avoid the Roar bug in _FRLG._ All you need is a Vulpix/Ninetales with Mean Look, Imprison, and Roar. Use Mean Look on turn one then Imprison on turn two. Now the Legendary Beasts can’t run and can’t use Roar either. Just hope that they don’t use Roar on either of the first two turns.
And sorry but it’s pronounced “Rai-oh.”

I really love roaming legendaries, the dopamine hit as a kid was unreal. It would have you geeked out for hours, recalling the encounter in your head over and over.
Then finally catching them is like a big sense of accomplishment. Like I can still imagine my hands shaking, dropping my gameboy on my bed.
But then they quickly became box Pokémon trophies. 😅 I was kinda disappointed but still happy I got a rare Pokémon but for them to be so weak. Like I always remember them being weak and was shocked that they are valuable competitively. Lol 😂
Thanks for the video, you scratched a long forgotten itch. 👌🏽

Ain't no way he calling Latios weak...
I sweeped the elite 4 with him on Emerald and Ruby...
Sure he might not be as busted as box legendaries like Rayquaza, Groudon and other legends with a base stat total of 670-680, but compared to the legendary birds and beasts Latios is actually super good having a great typing and an extremely good base stat total. Not to mention that if you get the other Lati twin you'll get their signature item Soul Dew which is just broken for the earlier games...
And in the later games they get Megas aswell.(Sadly they're over shadowed by Mega Mewtwo and Mega Rayquaza in literally every single way...)
