What’s important about Luffy is that he isn’t a particularly authoritative leader. Most of the Strawhats are autonomous and follow him out of respect. So if he does give a command, then you know it’s serious. Zoro seems less like a Vice-Captain who keeps the crew together in Luffy’s absence (that’s more like Nami) and more like the enforcer of Luffy’s authority and will.
Just something to note on the Nami and Zoro point - again, this comes back to Luffy v Usopp. After the fight, Luffy is too mentally distraught to do anything ("it's heavy") and it's Zoro who takes over at that point. He's the one that tells the crew to pack their things and that'll be leaving Merry for good. That's what's brilliant about the crew, both Zoro and Nami together make up what's required by the First Mate in this case - Nami for the day to day things while Zoro understands his words will carry more weight to the crew during tough times. They both provide something Luffy needs which is why they were the first 2 crew mates.
I feel like sometimes luffy acts stupid on purpose to make his crew happier. Because he has shown to be able to understand what is happening during times of plight and empathise. But sometimes he doesn't do it, because he understands how to lighten the blow.
This is true, Luffy has been pretending to be dumber than he is since the very beginning. He's a born leader who understands and manipulates group social dynamics. We can see this very early in Ch. 7 when he rats out Coby and then beats him up, in order to force a certain response from Coby and from the Marines. Or in Ch. 14 when Luffy, with a wry smile on his face, pretends not to notice Boodle crying after Boodle has an obvious emotional outburst, because he knows that Boodle is being a real man and confronting danger for the sake of his ideals. Luffy has always been complex and doesn't put all of his cards on the table, and its usually for the purpose of building up his friends.

Iv been saying that Luffy is just brash, lives in the moment and dosn't care about consequences. And dosn't care about learning something that he has no interest in. This makes him seem stupid. But hes shown several times that's he's actually pretty smart! My favorite thing to point to is his knowledge on Beetles, he can prolly talk to about Beetles just like nami could navigation, sanjie cooking or Robin archeology. It proves he's not dumb. It's just solving 2+2 serves no purpose for him or interest him.

A lot of First Mates/Second in command are more serious, and sometimes colder, and introvert, and more wise and clever than the captain. The captains are more outgoing, encouraging the crew's moral.

The positions within emperor crews are (shanks excluded) honestly more similar to fully fledged navies than pirate crews, given how many ships are under them. For example, using the ranks of the UK’s Royal Navy, Kaido would be analogous to the admiral of the fleet, with his commanders as his admirals, the tobiroppo as rear or vice admirals, and the headliners as captains.
My brother's an actual quartermaster for the navy lol. Which is quite a different role now and in an actual militarized navy than it was back then and with pirates. They are still one of the most important rates (job) on a ship though.

Or which port to best sell their wares if there isn't a company behind them.
Unless on a fishing vessel the captain is usually the owner/operator of the boat. Not too sure on a massive industrial scale but this was also a fact of some pirates back in the day and to this day… they’re just owners/operators of the ship/boat and therefore what they say goes
Actually speaking of Frog Facts, for the longest time as a kid, I thought that poison dart frogs were given that name because they could shoot poison darts out of their mouths. My disappointment was immense when I learned it was just humans using their poison on blowdarts.
2:28 That's why duck-feet pistols were invented. Only the captain on a ship was allowed to carry them, in case of mutiny. Many captains would carry 2 duck-feet pistols, (pistols with 4 barrels a peice). That way if anyone tried to mutiny the captain has the ability to take out up to 8 mutineers at once. It helped keep control on a pirate ship.
I'm pretty sure that anytime the position of "first mate" is brought up its almost always referred to as the vice-captain in both the manga and the anime.

Booty was in the amount of "shares" depending on the position you filled on the ship depending on the amount of shares you recieved, usually captains,doctors, quartermasters etc. had more than 1 share like 2 for the captain, 1.5 shares for the doctor and quarter master

I used to watch a show called Black Sails on Starz. The Quarter master was almost just as important as the Captain sometimes. The Quarter master was kind of like the medium between the crew and captain.
In the Wano arc, as the Big Mom Pirates are sailing to Wano, they actually have the debate of who would be the next in line. Perospero says himself because he’s the oldest child of Big Mom but someone else says Katakuri because he’s the strongest after Big Mom
Well then, i will use something else. I could use my fists but bepo being a polar bear is much stronger, so a powerful range weapon would be most useful in this scenerio. If bepo could melt any bullet then using a laser from a pasifista would be useful because it is more of a untangable object and therefore less likely to melt. But then you might say melt the gun. That being the case then i would probably use an artifical devil fruit from vegapunk (because i got the padifista laser it is safe to assume i could get an artifical devil fruit from vegapunk) probably being kizarus devil fruit or so other fruit that can produce an untangable projectile. Now if cuteness could refect then kizaru's devil fruit would be most useful such as the yata mirror. I would try to fight in a place with a good amount of glass so reflection can happen and even if this were to be reflected then i CV ould use the yata mirror to quivkly move to bepos location and take him out at quickly before any reaction. When zoro said Usopp will not be accepted on the ship until he apologises, you could tell deep down Luffy was still willing to allow him on ship and internally was begging Usopp to apologise because of what Zoro said to Luffy.

Would say for this series, you could for certain go over other positions in either a pirate crew or just a crew back in ye olden times. And see how they can also apply to One Piece and could make into crew members.
Nami is for sure the quartermaster. She’s essentially in charge anytime theirs on the ship she gives all the orders and splits up the treasure. She decides where and how to get where they need to go and she has a significant amount of influence and respect among the crew. Zoro is Luffy’s bff at this point

What's interesting about historical pirates is they unknowingly practiced an early form of democracy. They voted for their leaders, divided the loot equally, and welcomed anyone to the crew, regardless of religion or ethnicity. In some ways, they were ahead of their time. The Straw Hats represent this better than any other pirate crew in One Piece. Luffy is the captain, but the crew is a family. Whatever treasure they find during their journey belongs to the whole crew (although it's Nami who ends up using most of it). When it comes to inclusiveness, the Straw Hats have people from literally all backgrounds. A doctor who's a reindeer, a cyborg shipwright, a skeleton musician, and a fishman at the helm.

I'd say they still do, at least most of them. I think they'd walk through Queen, and beat King, Katakuri, or anyone on Blackbeard's crew without too much difficulty. Zoro didn't stand a chance until very recently, Rayleigh and Beckman are still a mystery -- we've only seen them go up against Kizaru and, well, he doesn't take anything seriously. But who knows, really. We haven't seen much from the admirals in a long time. Fujitora in Dressrosa, and the rest of them at Marineford. We can't really compare admirals from that long ago.

One new role I think in the One Piece world is rescue swimmer. If you have devil fruit users on the crew you would want one or several people who are good at swimming.
One thing I want to say is that Zoro is going to open his eye patch for sure. You can see Rayleigh having a cut on his eye as well. I think he had also closed it once in order to train his observation haki. Zoro is improving his ob haki right now by just using his one eye.

Zoro might be the first mate, but Nami is TOTALLY the quartermaster for the crew.

But that's because almost everything on modern ships is automated. The crew really are there to monitor the equipment.

Actually speaking of Frog Facts, for the longest time as a kid, I thought that poison dart frogs were given that name because they could shoot poison darts out of their mouths. My disappointment was immense when I learned it was just humans using their poison on blowdarts.

2:28 That's why duck-feet pistols were invented. Only the captain on a ship was allowed to carry them, in case of mutiny. Many captains would carry 2 duck-feet pistols, (pistols with 4 barrels a peice). That way if anyone tried to mutiny the captain has the ability to take out up to 8 mutineers at once. It helped keep control on a pirate ship.
I'm pretty sure that anytime the position of "first mate" is brought up its almost always referred to as the vice-captain in both the manga and the anime.
Honestly Nami is pretty much the Quartermaster of the Crew while Zolo is the 1st mate. One is essential on the sea and one is essential in battle! It takes both of them to make their captain the King of the Pirates😊🔥

Booty was in the amount of "shares" depending on the position you filled on the ship depending on the amount of shares you recieved, usually captains,doctors, quartermasters etc. had more than 1 share like 2 for the captain, 1.5 shares for the doctor and quarter master

I used to watch a show called Black Sails on Starz. The Quarter master was almost just as important as the Captain sometimes. The Quarter master was kind of like the medium between the crew and captain.
In the Wano arc, as the Big Mom Pirates are sailing to Wano, they actually have the debate of who would be the next in line. Perospero says himself because he’s the oldest child of Big Mom but someone else says Katakuri because he’s the strongest after Big Mom

Well then, i will use something else. I could use my fists but bepo being a polar bear is much stronger, so a powerful range weapon would be most useful in this scenerio. If bepo could melt any bullet then using a laser from a pasifista would be useful because it is more of a untangable object and therefore less likely to melt. But then you might say melt the gun. That being the case then i would probably use an artifical devil fruit from vegapunk (because i got the padifista laser it is safe to assume i could get an artifical devil fruit from vegapunk) probably being kizarus devil fruit or so other fruit that can produce an untangable projectile. Now if cuteness could refect then kizaru's devil fruit would be most useful such as the yata mirror. I would try to fight in a place with a good amount of glass so reflection can happen and even if this were to be reflected then i CV ould use the yata mirror to quivkly move to bepos location and take him out at quickly before any reaction. When zoro said Usopp will not be accepted on the ship until he apologises, you could tell deep down Luffy was still willing to allow him on ship and internally was begging Usopp to apologise because of what Zoro said to Luffy.
My mother's side of the family had two pirates and they were involved on one of the largest hauls in history. They were one the ships that took the Great Mohamed.
Some people says that Big Mom's first mate was Streusen, that's also her mentor, I think. Now, the second in command would be Katakuri, or Perospero.

Ive always really loved bepo as a character and really wish he got more screen time. It would be cool to actually see him get a proper opponent. He doesn't seem super strong but you don't have to make his enemy super strong either.

Nami is for sure the quartermaster. She’s essentially in charge anytime theirs on the ship she gives all the orders and splits up the treasure. She decides where and how to get where they need to go and she has a significant amount of influence and respect among the crew. Zoro is Luffy’s bff at this point

It might not have been said, but it is implied. Zoro always fights the second strongest. He might not have a title, but he is respected. You can tell Sanji likes zoro bc he went to find him after kuma put him through the pain bubble.

Yes! That’s the one I always remember when this topic comes up. Bartolomeo says that Zoro is considered the vice captain of the Straw Hats (along those lines in the Anime anyway).
But that's what Bartholomeo thinks his role/roll is, not that it is

He’s considered the vice-captain (Anime, paraphrased). Sounds like it’s confirmed in the manga and like 95% confirmed in the anime solely because of the word “considered”.

Being a vice captain or Quarter-master for me its related to both Gibbs and Bootsrap Bill from Pirates of the Caribbean, it is being seonc authority. Also I mean Zoro was right with Usopp, imagine Zoro in WCI, GGs Sanji if he sees him beating up Luffy, cause Zoro wouldn't have it
The quartermaster is Nami, sno argument there, it is a fact. And I agree with your points. After all in a pirate ship when shit goes dawn the captain's word is law, and that is kinda how it goes mostly. If luffy gives an order during a critical moment the crew will obey.
What's interesting about historical pirates is they unknowingly practiced an early form of democracy. They voted for their leaders, divided the loot equally, and welcomed anyone to the crew, regardless of religion or ethnicity. In some ways, they were ahead of their time.
The Straw Hats represent this better than any other pirate crew in One Piece. Luffy is the captain, but the crew is a family. Whatever treasure they find during their journey belongs to the whole crew (although it's Nami who ends up using most of it). When it comes to inclusiveness, the Straw Hats have people from literally all backgrounds. A doctor who's a reindeer, a cyborg shipwright, a skeleton musician, and a fishman at the helm.
if anything was to possibly happen to Luffy...I think Jimbei would be the one to step up since he used to be a captain and he can navigate the water currents anywhere

In One Piece, how strong are Right Hands honestly. There’s no way an Admiral just walks through them, especially Beckman, Rayleigh, and now Zoro.
I'd say they still do, at least most of them. I think they'd walk through Queen, and beat King, Katakuri, or anyone on Blackbeard's crew without too much difficulty. Zoro didn't stand a chance until very recently, Rayleigh and Beckman are still a mystery -- we've only seen them go up against Kizaru and, well, he doesn't take anything seriously.
But who knows, really. We haven't seen much from the admirals in a long time. Fujitora in Dressrosa, and the rest of them at Marineford. We can't really compare admirals from that long ago.

One new role I think in the One Piece world is rescue swimmer. If you have devil fruit users on the crew you would want one or several people who are good at swimming.
One thing I want to say is that Zoro is going to open his eye patch for sure. You can see Rayleigh having a cut on his eye as well. I think he had also closed it once in order to train his observation haki. Zoro is improving his ob haki right now by just using his one eye.
