This is quite remarkable! I really enjoyed watching this video (the first I have seen since encountering your channel), and it brings back memories to the late 1990's, when I was regularly visiting a couple of the large piano and organ retailers in my area. One store in particular offered both piano's (acoustic and digital) as well as organs. And of course, Lowrey organs were among them! 🙂
I was absolutely mesmerized by their capabilities. The sound quality was as professional as anything I have heard anywhere else, but not surprisingly, the high price tag of any of their models reflected the professional quality and workmanship of these Grande instruments (organs are considered the King of instruments).
For me, a college student, the price was completely prohibitive--the same as purchasing a brand new automobile at the time--but I loved stopping by the music store and playing on them on occasion. (I play both piano and organ). One of my favorite Lowrey organs (their top of the line model at the time) had an amazing acoustic demonstration that showed off just how much fun you could have mixing registrations and instruments. It was a catchy tune that was written to feel like a train ride. And indeed it simulated the locomotive whistle by allowing you to press what I believe was called an "expression bar?," a black touch-responsive bar that ran along the base of the lower keyboard console.
It was pretty amazing. Does that sound familiar to any of you? If so, what models supported it?
As amazing as the Lowrey organs were, I ultimately purchased a used Yamaha Clavinova after looking at models for several years, because I am first and foremost a pianist, and the weighted keys of a real piano is what really brings keyboard music alive for me, because of the nuances of the weighted action. Plus, the high-end Lowrey's were simply too large to fit within my tiny studio apartment! ;-)
Even so, I also love playing organs, so I would certainly have enjoyed a Lowrey! So over the past 25 years, I have, at times, continued to consider purchasing a Lowrey. And though Kawaii has since retired the Lowrey organ line, it doesn't change how amazing these instruments still are.
Now that they have been around for quite a time, and the cost has dropped on some of them, I have considered possibly purchasing one of them used. To have BOTH a piano and an organ in our house would be fantastic. I had no idea that Lowrey organs had been manufactured recently enough to support touch screen consoles and USB (instead of 3½" floppy diskettes).
So what models would you recommend? I know that there is no simple answer to my question, but the number of Lowrey lines and model series is quite staggering. I would certainly enjoy one of the higher end models, but which model(s) would you recommend for sound quality, sample richness, flexibility, and durability?
The SU Series of Lowrey Organs ( Royale, Stardust, Sensation, Sensation SE ) appear to be similar to the organs I looked at some 25 years ago, though it has been far too long to remember the models that impressed me.
Regardless, each of the Lowrey organs appear to be a true work of art... a piece of very fine furniture as much as an amazing instrument. It is remarkable when you consider the amount of talent that has gone into the creation of these instruments over the decades. A myriad of engineers, carpenters, designers, builders, and musician's working together to make them possible. Truly a labor of love!
