GRASS SO OVERGROWN I Couldn't Use A Regular LAWN MOWER

  • This all started when I got a call from another lawn care company to see if I wanted to mow this overgrown lawn. Of course I said yes. Arriving sight unseen I was amazed at how tall the grass was and I knew this was a big job and any zero turn would have trouble with this. For that reason I went and rented a tractor with a brush hog to get this job done.

    Good deal, pro-tip here, lower your FEL, front end loader to just above the mower cut height when mowing in an area thats unfamiliar, this helps to avoid hitting debris, like trees, metal posts and rocks laying below the high grass.

    @normandong4479 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wow and super wow. Kudos to you for tackling such an immense lawn. Takes some patience and courage to get a tractor & brush hog, which handles so differently from a zero turn mower. But farmers typically use these on very large and bushy fields. It won't have the same quality of cut, but the power take-off efficiently transfers the 25+ hp from the engine vs drive belts to chop down the grass. Kubota is a good machine and these diesels are generally more economical than gasoline engines. Very well done and certainly a feather in your cap.

      Or sheep. They’re cuter than goats

    • @tbelding
      @tbelding 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@SandrA-hr5zk - The problem with sheep is that if you don't sit there and move them around, they'll eat the grass to below the roots, and kill all the grass. That's the reason behind shepherds, and what also led (partly) to the Sheep Wars. In relatively arid areas, the sheep will turn everything to desert that will take years to recover. Even in well watered areas, grass takes a while to come back. Remember, sheep are descended from mountainous animals, with teeth designed to get as much of a plant that grows out of the rock as possible - leaving the roots still in the rock. In dirt, they have no such restrictions.
      However, if you have someone to watch them, sheep can give you the most fantastic lawns.

    Johnson grass is difficult to mow with anything, us a 12-foot bush hog and the tractor has to have power. Johnson grass used to be difficult to kill; now there are chemicals. The grass grows by seeds and rhizoids. Wind, birds, and animals easily spread the seeds, if you break a rhizoid, another chute will grow. It spreads in the field and surrounding areas and keeps growing. The grass if classified as an obnoxious and invasive grass. Equipment needs to be thoroughly washed down so the seed will not be carried to other areas. I have fought Johnson grass over a 100-acre field. I know what is like when you were mowing.

      Put some cows and sheep on it also. I had an uncle who raised sheep and he had big fields like this for them to graze on. They kept it very short like a golf course. Our cows would've loved grazing on this field, and seriously doubt we would have to worry about any of them finding a hole in the fence to escape and look for more food like ours did all the time.

    I’m impressed by that little mower, it’s got no deck depth and to process that thick a grass is something. I get free fields like this to make hay in, though they are bigger but I roll to the field in a tractor, I typically use my Fendt 828 with a 26’ batwing. I love that you’re able to trailer that tractor of yours. I hate traveling on road in tractors…it takes so long to get places. Cool set up you have! I think if I was doing that job, I would have done the first pass with the mower 8” high and then lower on a second pass so the cuttings aren’t so thick.

    WOW, that was fantastic. What a difference. I loved the camera work from the drivers eye view. The smell of cut grass must have been absolutely gorgeous. I just adore your hat, happy St. Patricks day from Dublin, Ireland 💚🤍🧡

    I would be in hog heaven ( no pun intended) to cut this field. I used to have to do this regularly and found it calming and therapeutic. Good job!!

    I upgraded my rotary mower for a flail mower with hammers. Night and day difference. It will grind up anything 1 1/2" and smaller if it's green and much larger if it's rotted.
    It really does a fantastic job of mulching the grass as well leaving far less clumps of grass

    Your comment about "do I look like a farmer?" make me laugh out loud!! I said the same thing when I used the neighbors tractor to do some grading work alongside the house. I've never used a tractor before, and it's brand new with 41hrs on it. I have become accustomed to it, and the neighbors want me to learn how to use it. The Kubota tractor sure is nice, the one you used is a bit bigger than what they have, but similar in function I am sure. I agree with prior comments, the tractor is definitely better and more efficient in straight long runs versus a lot of turns, and also the brush hog from what I saw was a tad bit too low. A lever on the right side of the seat if similar to operation adjusts the 3 point to raise and lower the attachments. After 10hrs of operation, I still get on it and have to think over the controls sometimes, LOL!! The hydraulics are very touchy, and you barely have to touch the joystick to make the bucket raise, lower, and dump; I can at times make the tractor dance from the quick motions, even when I want it to go slow!! I wouldn't mind having a hydraulic adjustment to slow it down at times.

    You are brave. Well done. In most cases if you ask a nabour that has equipment to cut it for hay they will do it for free if you let them take the bails, might save you and your friend time in the future if you are in a pinch or have no time.

    When I was a teen my dad used to use a tractor with a mower and mow between the fencelines and when we grew grains. Every year he would mow over a bumblebee nest or a ground yellow jacket nest and had to hightail the tractor out of the field for a couple of days.

    In Australia we use slashers which are similar to a brush hog but no wheel on the back. Both ends are open with many short lengths of chain to slow down any objects firing out. I use a Kubota B3300 with a 5 foot slasher and reverse thru thick stuff if I know what is in there

    Wow wow!! I’m seeing this a year later and I’m wondering if it was maintained. I could see you cleaning up the area around the house itself. That was incredible to watch - out here we’ve got brush fires and can’t water. All that green is wonderful when managed.
