I did a hair analysis on my 15 year old son, it showed a significant amount of arsenic. He has been drinking rice milk for 10 years. He switched to coconut. Going to do another test in a couple months.

I love soy milk and so do my kids.
We'll start making sure the rice we eat is brown rice imported from India too!

Most of these plants milks are a total rips off when it comes to cost. Just blend some of your favorite base(almonds/rice/soy) with some water and add a sweetener. (I just use water cos I'm lazy...)

Just recently found out that I'm allergic to almonds and soy. I had been drinking coconut milk until Dr. Greger's video on its effects on cholesterol (and I'm trying to lower mine). Also had been drinking rice milk from Trader Joe's until this video. Guess I'm on the hunt for oat and/or hemp milk. Anyone have any suggestions?!

After watching the frequent segments here on arsenic it came to my attention the extremely high levels of arsenic in US produced wine. In fact there was a class action suit in California that was eventually thrown out over labeling requirements but it appears the concerns over arsenic were and are real where wine is concerned . The issue doesn't just end there as beer too is a harbinger of excessive levels of arsenic. Considering the amount of arsenic in the diet and its known link to cancer how is this issue remaining under the radar when it comes to linking cancer with a cause.

    • @tomsawyer8525
      @tomsawyer8525 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

We aren't talking "sulfates". We are talking arsenic which is a heavy toxic metal. Rice is heavy on arsenic because of it being grown in soil once used for cotton years ago which was attacked by the Boll Weevil of which the farmers used tremendous amounts of pesticides with arsenic to combat the pest. The arsenic in wine could be from pesticides and could be from something else but one thing for certain it has been determined the arsenic is not organic and therefore man made. Independent researchers of whom are yet to be identified are now claiming you have nothing to worry about but again the credentials of the independents have yet to be revealed. The original lab tests done by the EPA with no dog in the fight found high levels of the metal. You could have easily done your homework before responding.
      -------
The U.S. government has not established a limit for arsenic in wine --or any other food or beverage, except
drinking water -- because there is no body of evidence to support the claim that the trace amounts of
arsenic found in wine pose a risk.
      ------------
Duh! The bottom line is that if arsenic is dangerous in water then it is dangerous wherever it is found. We know for a fact that arsenic causes cancer and NO safe limit has been determined.

Awesome video. Thank you again for all your research and hard work. We may just stick to soy. We rotate out milks (coconut, rice , and soy). And my boys arent drinking a ton of it. However in the mainstream mommy community, there is a lot of anxiety about soy. I always find myself doubting.....I appreciate all you're videos about soy. It helps me relax a bit! Ha ha!

Wow, scary stuff! People have been telling me for years to ditch the pasta and eat more rice. My problem is that I love pasta and rice not so much, so I've been eating a lot of whole grain organic pasta and not much rice. Always felt bad about that, until now. I live in Europe and we have a lot of rice coming from India here and when I do buy rice I tend to buy organic Basmati, because I like the taste and smell of it. People have often told me it's silly to buy organic rice that costs twice as much as regular rice, but I guess if you want arsenic-free food, it might be worth the extra money (duh!). Also, as a vegan with knee problems for 25+ years from an old injury, I've often been told that I'm being risky, that I should drink milk for the calcium, etc. I drink a lot of oat milk and almond milk, so I think I'll just keep doing that too haha. Awesome news; the next smart ass that comes at me about calcium is being sent a link to this video! :D

    What about rice starch?

  • @brucepaine7718
    @brucepaine7718 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The problem, Dr. Gregor is that the studies didn't state where the rice that produced the high levels of arsenic were grown.
Rice grown in fields that previously had cotton fields or have recieved their water derived from other fields that had chemical fertilizers that then fed back into the common streams and rivers are what has caused that rice to contain high levels of arsenic and there are ignorant companies possibly still selling that rice and other companies source the rice for their rice milks and rice syrup from that same rice.
But please don't paint all rice producers from the same brush.
Lundberg Family Farms has grown rice in untainted fields of soil and using water derived from no chemical fertilized fields for generations and those arsenic also in a chemical foound naturally in very minute amounts in rice and other foods the rice grown by Lundberg has been independently analysed and found to contain very safe levels of the chemical.

I'm so confounded as to why the literature hasn't revealed that soy actually must somehow create hormonal abnormalities in men in large quantities. It's said that only one older man was found to have ED but when I was drinking lots of soy milk and lots of soy protein powder it was the first and only time I ever experienced ED in my life. When I quit the ED disappeared. A friend as well grew man boobs drinking too much soy. We're only two anecdotal cases but I just have a strong sense that there is a link despite the literature. My guess is that there is something hormonally disrupting in soy protein isolates and not whole soy though the research refutes it. Maybe It's only our unique biochemistries that didn't do well with it. Personally I'll stick with almond, oat or cashew milk regardless.

Honestly, this is all really disheartening. Rice has been a staple for me since transitioning to a WFPBD, and rice milk has been our go to substitute for the few things we need a milk substitute for. It doesn't have the weird aftertaste of other plant based milks. Also, people have severe allergies to soy. In addition, such exotic things a potato milk are not widely available. I'm lucky we have an alternative to soy milk here. This whole arsenic series has really taken the wind out of my sails. 😔

I've noticed the you reference Consumer Reports these days. Recently, though, they have found other sources for information, and seem to be providing better guidance.

While there may be a risk in concentrated foods like rice syrup, in general, rice in population studies doesn't measure up to the scare:
As shown in Table 2, long-term total rice intake was not associated with risk of overall cancer incidence. Specifically, participants who ate at least 5 servings of total rice per week had a relative risk of 0.97 (95% CI 0.85-1.07; P for trend 0.37). Similarly, neither white rice intake (Table 3) nor brown rice intake (Table 4) was associated with overall cancer risk.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4919813/
So yeah, eat whole foods, the rest of the arsenic scare doesn't measure up to long term population studies.

C'mon Micheal what are you doing making these kinds of videos? Arsenic in rice is no where near as dangerous as saturated fat and cholesterol in animal products.

This is such a strawman argument. Did he say that saturated fat and cholesterol in animal products are not bad now suddenly? No. He has made a plethora of videos on that subject as well. He's simply providing us with facts.
I'm vegan as well, but I won't close my eyes for the fact that not all plant products are good for you, whether they are naturally not good for us (like poisonous plants, or coconut milk for that matter) or whether they have become toxic through human intervention (like the arsenic in rice).
I feel like you are subtly insinuating that we should refrain from making any videos criticizing anything that is vegan, and that is a very counterproductive stance to have. It will only push people away from veganism by making them feel like vegans are all idiots looking to confirm what they want to hear - Which is unnecessary because veganism is an incredibly rational choice. There isn't anything to hide.
Besides, there's plenty of equally inexpensive alternatives to rice. What's the problem here?

Maybe because that topic has been covered to death, and people who heed his advice and adopt a whole foods plant based diet would be likely to increase their rice consumption.
The channel is Nutrition Facts. He covers all kinds of nutrition topics. Do you really want video after video bashing animal products and nothing else?

Why do you promote soy milk without mentioning that most soy is gmo?
What about coconut milk, cashew milk, etc. ?

      Uli Martin
Silk brand, one of (if not the) most popular soy milk brands, is non-GMO cert.
If you're that concerned, just make the soymilk yourself

because soy milk isn't gmo ?!?!

Nearly 100% of Soy milk and tofu is non-GMO. Personally, I've never see GMO soy milk, tofu or tempeh. Wouldn't be surprised if it no longer exists.

Almost all gmo soy is fed to livestock.

In my country there is also cheap organic soy milk. Think the gmo problem is getting killed on soy.

Hmm, this is getting to manipulative for me - so rice milk is not nutritious……… because of one case study. But then you give no comparison with another case - only soy milk, only cashew milk diet etc. How is this accurate? Where is the context? There is similar cherry picking to calorie restriction vegan diet from which people have severe health problems and claim veganism to be bad, but the real cause was calorie restriction whatever on traditional, vegan or other diets - you will always getting problems.
And you say rice milk have not so many calories, but in the table you showed soy milk had less or equal calories to rice, in fact oat milk the same, hemp - less. wtf? We are not blind or dumb!
If this is for vegan activism - it has a poor design which throw a negative shadow to all "pro vegan" science findings, if this is for science - it is manipulative and not correct.

I was going to share this, but you promoting GMO soy milk is just as bad. Also, men should be be drinking any soy. Soy does not prevent cancer, but causes it.

Really? Here in East Asia everyone drinks soymilk, all the time. No sign of cancer epidemic..
