I met Joe Namath, a true gentleman, very bright, articulate, extraordinarily insightful & spiritual, funny, he was a boyhood hero, always admired him for his guts and grace under pressure on the field. I asked him about The Super Bowl, and what he said amazed me: "99 times out of 100 the Colts would beat us, they were clearly the better team. But on THAT day, they were just a little overconfident and we were just a little bit better, a little bit quicker off the ball, and that made all the difference". He was a star, but he was 100% about his TEAM.
Chiefs fan here from Wichita, Kansas, almost age 70. About 2:45 into this, there's a clip where Namath scrambles and downfield he and Bobby Bell hit head on! Bell is Hall of Fame linebacker who originally played in the Chiefs defensive line. Namath keeps running while it is Bell who is knocked to the ground. Namath was a tough football player, and stronger than most remember.
I do really admire Namath but I'm so glad the late Earl Morrall went on to play such an important part in the Dolphins' Perfect Season as well as winning rings in Super Bowl V and VIII. A vastly underrated quarterback.
I’m happy and thankful for both the Jets and the 1972-73 Dolphins during their super Bowl runs. Without the Jets winning, who knows what happens to the AFC in future seasons, post-1968. I’m also sure Don Shula’s legacy was inspiring to Bill Walsh, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcels, Joe Gibbs, and Bill Belichick.
My Dad took me SB II...Joe was sitting 4 rows in front of me...got his autograph...became a Jets fan for life (Iknow, I know...sigh)...then I got to go back for SB III and witness the upset!

One day she walks in, looks @ me directly & said: "Mr. Murillo, why don't you enlighten us all, are you planning on Passing!?" She said that because during the semester I was completely lost & all my open class answers were always wrong! It was during the Football Season, & I didn't have the time to even watch a quarter of Football, & it was slowly killing me inside. I responded to her & said: "ABSOLUTELY NOT, I'm gonna drop back 15 yards & PUNT!" The classroom exploded with laughter, & many students started to pound on their table tops. @ that moment, It became a class filled with unruly 7th graders, all while the Professor & I just stared @ one another, as she never moved, still holding her brief case in hand. As the explosion from the laughter grew louder & louder, she walked out of class. Just showed this recently with my Dad Toughest and best guy I know Huge Jets fan When Don Maynard cried he started to almost bawl and I’ve seen him cry only a couple times but never like that And he said to me “God they need to win again.” They will pops For sure :)

By the time Chuck Knox brought him to the Rams in 1977 he was basically finished. Criticizing Namath for not throwing a pass in the 4th quarter is ridiculous. The Jets were controlling the line of scrimmage and most importantly the clock, so why should he have thrown a pass? 1. Many QBs were their own offensive coordinators. I think that was the factor in giving Joe the MVP in the Super Bowl. He called the right plays and milked the clock once they had the lead 2. Cornerbacks could jam after 5 yards until the late 70s, that led to many INTs and the bad ratios at the time. 3. Defensive players could cheap shot QBs which they did all of the time. I saw a Raider spearhead Len Dawson in old footage.
When I was a kid, when we played football, someone always wanted to be Joe Namath. I wanted to be Don Maynard. Don was why I was a wide receiver and wore #13.
Gotta love Broadway Joe. He played the game when you played hurt. You played pre-dome in the weather. You played tough. On top of that, Joe with his flash, but never b*tchy or complaining, made Football accessible for those who never cared for the game. Joe was a unique champion.

Len Dawson said after Chiefs MANHANDLED the Vikings, he left the stadium, there were guys from the Oakland Raiders waiting in the parking lot! He didn't know what was up, but they all told him, "Way to go man! Way to go." I remember the AFL got no respect until the Jets won, then KC won, then 1970 season, the merger.

Walter Payton’s attitude in Super Bowl XX was the opposite of Don Maynard’s in Super Bowl III. Payton pouted about the fact that he didn’t score a touchdown. I think the fact that he finally won a Super Bowl as he was getting near the end of his career should have meant something to him.

The Jets in 1968 did lean on their run game (3rd in attempts, 8th in yards, 9th in yards per carry, 1st in touchdowns) but their passing offense was still tremendous for the era (3rd in attempts, 3rd in yards, 4th in touchdowns, 4th fewest interceptions). The offense finished 2nd in points and 3rd in yards. The defense was 4th in points, 1st in yards, 2nd against the pass, and 1st against the run. This was one of the best things that I have seen in my lifetime. I watched them win it when I was 15 years old. Great to see it again. Hope the Jets can do it again before I leave.
This documentary of America’s game is the most interesting one to watch. It talks about true underdogs, how football was a true tough sport, lots of controversy to look back (Heidi game), and that ANYONE can win the super bowl.

A 7 year old kid from Pittsburgh emulated Joe Willie's classic dropback and quick release. Namath himself said that he threw the football better than he ever did. The young man's name was Dan Marino.
Joe's arm may have been a little bit stronger, but Dan's release just a tad quicker. But Joe was quick. Marino, was an offensive lineman's dream. Balls coming out quick. No sacks. Both similar. Knee problems, but quick in the pocket. Footwork, release, seeing the field, always in attack mode.
When Joe makes that fist, smiles and looks at his ring... goosebumps!! Goddamn right, Joe...you did it. Fuckin jets are gonna make me go to my grave never seeing another Superbowl ring. I was only 8 months old in 69. I didn't even get to see that one!!
I was 15 years old in high school and me and two of my buddies bet on " Joe Willie" and the Jets ! My dad and his generation hated the long haired hippie with the white shoes and fur coats ! Namath running off the field holding up his " We're number one !" finger stayed with me forever ! He was , and still is , The Man ! Love ya' Joe !

Thank you New York Jets. When you won that Super Bowl you didn’t just win it for your franchise, you won it for the AFL. You have to wonder how things may have been different if The Jets and The Chiefs didn’t win Super Bowl 3 and 4. You did a great service of putting the AFL as a even talented league with the NFL.

Namath is in the HOF, and most certainly deserves it. His oversized persona got the attention. Also well deserved. Matt Snell was a guy that got the job done. Big tough durable backs often don’t get the love they deserve. Reminds me of #22 with the Titans, Derrick Henry. He’s 6’3” and 250 lbs and can run like a RB. Now that’s saying something. But just like Snell he isn’t getting the love he should. He’s a great back.
I knew Derrik was a monster when he was at Alabama. Perhaps the best RB in the game today. Big, strong, fast, the whole package. What he did in the playoffs was amazing, but I really wasn't suprised. (I'm not a Titans fan, but I rooted for them, except KC game,my grandson likes Chiefs, so I rooted for KC) Now if Dallas could get it together, old Papa (me) would be happy!😁
The only problem I see with this program is that the trophy shown at the beginning is the wrong trophy. It wasn’t the Lombardi Trophy then, it was the AFL-NFL World Championship trophy with the logos of both leagues engraved on it.

Another component of this was the fact that the Jets' legacy started with the New York Titans, who went bankrupt in '62 while playing in front of family and friends at the decaying Polo Grounds...a whole lot of terrific players were brought in to surround and complement Namath, and Weeb Ewbank and a cache of great assistants "coached 'em up"...
I used to go up to the Peekskill Military Academy every day after work to watch the Jets practice in 1965. Joe would hang out downtown and was as nice a guy as you can imagine! The '69 Super Bowl was the best game I have ever watched!
Watched this game I was absolutely stunned, the Jets won. Had friends who the entire time before the game were talking about how the Colts would kill the Jets,(TBH that's what every one thought)after the game, those SAME kids said "I knew the Jets would win!" Any way this & SB 4 proved the AFL was on par with the NFL. IMO. I was 11 years old then, my how time flies.

I’m an 80s boy and I love football this team really had guts and was a 21 point underdog and kicked the Sh@&& out of the Colts biggest upset ever I enjoyed as a former Wide Receiver Don Maynard and Joe Namath wish I had a QB like him.
It was huge, the Chiefs MANHANDLING the Vikes the next year was huge as well. I think over confidence, may have contributed to Colts & Vikings losses. Still, it was so long ago, I was in 5th grade for SB3 & 6th for SB4. Still the Chiefs had a huge O line, a great QB a defense 2nd to none. Jets had a great team too, Snell was the real hero of that game. Jets defense played lights out. IMO. Oh well, I can barely play catch with my grandson now. He's 10. Loves the game.
I was in 8th grade in Baltimore that year. If I'd understood betting at that age, I could have cleaned up. Baltimoreans were so confident in a Colts victory.
For the Jets, the memory is still clear and bittersweet 50 years (now almost 51) later. For the Colts fans who are still around, the sting is still there no doubt.

I meet Joe one day in Hollywood, Ca. We had lunch. I was a 15-year-old run-away from Indiana. It was 1969 or so. The great Joe Namath still had time for a homeless rage-tag street kid like me.
Joe Namath talked his team into learning Transcendental Meditation!!! Normally before a game the players were yelling, growling & punching helmets & shoulder pads! But before the Super bowl they were reading books & playing chess!!! Their minds were focused, unified!! Thats how Joe gaurenteed a victory!!! He meditates to this day!!!

Absolutely right. Their whole defense was under rated. No Hall of Famers - but a lot of GREAT players who were clutch players and they played well together. during this run it was often the defense with great plays in pressure moments that turned the tide. I was a 10th grader in 68 and followed Jets closely. Philbin was a bad dude. and very very professional.
He was feared. Back then, those players were iron men. They had the bump & run defensive backs, the D linemen could head slap O line men & QBs as well. Different game now. There are a few people playing today who could fit right in. Remember Tatum if the Raiders? He destroyed people with his hits. I don't think Ronnie Lott could get by with today's rules. There were big hitters, in those days.
As a surviving Baltimore Colts fan I always hated Joe after this game. When Stan White blitzed and blindsided him in a regular season game and seperated his shoulder a few years later 65000 at Memorial Stadium stood up and cheered. But as I have entered the twilight of my life I really like the guy. His reverence of Unitas and Eubank is probably why. In sports you can win all your regular season games be the MVP but if you can't win in the post season well your Fran, Marino and Kelly. Winning is everything......Vince Lombardi
Same here. Old Cowboy fan, myself. All those guys I hated on opposing teams, I actually respect now, there were some great players. Colts beat Dallas in SB5, thought I never be happy again! Hated the Colts!LoL Now when my grandson & I watch, he'll say "Oh that guy sucks!" I tell him, "Listen son the last guy on the bench is a stud, he wouldn't be on the team. All these guys on every team are great players. Respect them for being good enough to make an NFL roster." "I know Papa, you say it all the time, but that guy sucks!" LoL (he's a big kid, plays football, with the kids two yrs older. He whoops head on defense. Shame I'm so old, he's got the talent, the size,but I'm after him about his work ethic. (He could take care of his old Papa, but that's at least 10 yrs from now.🤞got my fingers crossed!)
As far as Colts go , the funny thing is when you watch the nfl documentary of their 1970 season & championship, and listen to Bubba Smith & Mike Curtis, you get the impression that despite winning that SB, they still can't get over the loss of SB III, all these years later.

I was born in 1970 and i didn't pick up on Football first until the early 80s. But i reckon what Joe Namath meant for Football, was the same way as what Maradona did for Soccer: A magician!
After watching most of these programs, one thing I've noticed is how much tougher these old school players are. I dont think 90% of the league today could hack it.
Humans were tougher back then.From our army to dog catchers.We had a cataclysmic cultural shift for many reasons.I believe the primary drivers being our screwed up women.....tough is masculine which is defective, and technology.When I grew up every kid could run a 2 miler.Today .70 of our military recruits can't pass a basic fitness test.We overall were tougher then.Then the gloria stenheims,hugh hefner types started to tell us how wrong that all was.I am not sure today's construction worker has the same grit as a NASA engineer of back then.

In todays game, Joe might have used free agency to go to a better team when he was younger. Of the 9 healthy seasons he was with the Jets, the Jets sucked 5-6 of them. Especially later in the 1970s. The reality is, Joe never played at 100% healthy.

The Championship wins by the JETS and the CHIEFS changed Pro Football .... In fact, I wish the AFL & NFL had never merged, so EVERY Super Bowl would feature the champions of both leagues going head-to-head for it ALL ...
That is a foolish statement. While impossible to predict, had he put in the game earlier, he may gave had enough time to lead to several scores. He led the offense on an 80 yard drive late in the game. He simply did not have enough time for any other scores.

Great comment, Dwight. I grew up on Long Island. Huge Jets fan. My father took me to the Oakland Jets AFL Championship game and I remember it like it was yesterday. The bomb to Maynard was as close to a miracle as I will ever see - especially in those conditions. Despite all that we all were getting ready to lose, until Lamonica threw that stupid pass. Sports Gods intervened and Jets were on to Super Bowl. I LOVED both Maynard and Alworth. Maynard was faster than almost anyone in the game at the time. Alworth - poetry in motion.

I met Joe Namath, a true gentleman, very bright, articulate, extraordinarily insightful & spiritual, funny, he was a boyhood hero, always admired him for his guts and grace under pressure on the field. I asked him about The Super Bowl, and what he said amazed me: "99 times out of 100 the Colts would beat us, they were clearly the better team. But on THAT day, they were just a little overconfident and we were just a little bit better, a little bit quicker off the ball, and that made all the difference".
He was a star, but he was 100% about his TEAM.

Chiefs fan here from Wichita, Kansas, almost age 70. About 2:45 into this, there's a clip where Namath scrambles and downfield he and Bobby Bell hit head on! Bell is Hall of Fame linebacker who originally played in the Chiefs defensive line. Namath keeps running while it is Bell who is knocked to the ground. Namath was a tough football player, and stronger than most remember.
I do really admire Namath but I'm so glad the late Earl Morrall went on to play such an important part in the Dolphins' Perfect Season as well as winning rings in Super Bowl V and VIII. A vastly underrated quarterback.
I’m happy and thankful for both the Jets and the 1972-73 Dolphins during their super Bowl runs. Without the Jets winning, who knows what happens to the AFC in future seasons, post-1968. I’m also sure Don Shula’s legacy was inspiring to Bill Walsh, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcels, Joe Gibbs, and Bill Belichick.

I thought it was the mafia paying Earl Morall and Don Shula to throw the Super Bowl and enable the NFL AFL merger that made the it the most popular sport, but here it was Joe Namath and his 100 yards passing that did it.

Joe Namath played 3 years longer than he should have. There were rumors that he would either retire or jump to the WFL following the 1974 NFL season but Namath re-signed with New York when the Jets made him the highest paid quarterback in the league. Namath took a physical pounding in 1975 & 1976 playing for two very bad N.Y. Jets squads and as a result his interception totals ballooned. By the time Chuck Knox brought him to the Rams in 1977 he was basically finished. However, it is a testament to Namath's courage and dedication that he played 13 years with knees so badly damaged that he was given a 4-F rating and a deferment from military service after coming out of Alabama. Jets team doctor's said he would be lucky to play 4 years.
While Namath would miss 28 regular season games between 1970 and 1973 due to injuries, it is his body of work between 1965 and 1974 that made him a Hall of Famer:

Playing in windy Shea Stadium, Namath finished as the AFL's 2nd All-Time ranked passer (1970 Official AFL History manual published by the Sporting News - page 112). It was a different era when Namath played. Only 3 of the top 9 all-time AFL rated passers threw more TD's than INT's and only Namath and Len Dawson finished with completion percentages over 50% (1500 or more attempts). The AFL was all about throwing the ball deep - not like the shorter passing game of today. When I look at the top 25 all-time rated NFL passers I see names like Chad Pennington, Matt Schaub, Andy Dalton, Tony Romo, Dante Culpepper and Colin Kaepernick but not Johnny Unitas, Roger Staubach, Otto Graham, Bart Starr or Terry Bradshaw. Something is wrong with that picture. The rating system does not take in to account qualities like courage, dedication and leadership - all traits that Joe Namath possessed. An added note regarding passer ratings (from the NFL website):
"It is important to remember that the system is used to rate passers, not quarterbacks. Statistics do not reflect leadership, play-calling, and other intangible factors that go into making a successful professional quarterback."
Namath quarterbacked the Jets to the most significant triumph in pro football history. It was a game changer that finally brought credibility to the upstart American Fooball League. Criticizing Namath for not throwing a pass in the 4th quarter is ridiculous. The Jets were controlling the line of scrimmage and most importantly the clock, so why should he have thrown a pass? Ask Pete Carroll about how well things worked out when Russell Wilson threw an ill advised pass in Super Bowl 49.

1. Many QBs were their own offensive coordinators. I think that was the factor in giving Joe the MVP in the Super Bowl. He called the right plays and milked the clock once they had the lead
2. Cornerbacks could jam after 5 yards until the late 70s, that led to many INTs and the bad ratios at the time.
3. Defensive players could cheap shot QBs which they did all of the time. I saw a Raider spearhead Len Dawson in old footage.

When I was a kid, when we played football, someone always wanted to be Joe Namath. I wanted to be Don Maynard. Don was why I was a wide receiver and wore #13.
Gotta love Broadway Joe. He played the game when you played hurt. You played pre-dome in the weather. You played tough. On top of that, Joe with his flash, but never b*tchy or complaining, made Football accessible for those who never cared for the game. Joe was a unique champion.

Len Dawson said after Chiefs MANHANDLED the Vikings, he left the stadium, there were guys from the Oakland Raiders waiting in the parking lot! He didn't know what was up, but they all told him, "Way to go man! Way to go." I remember the AFL got no respect until the Jets won, then KC won, then 1970 season, the merger.

Walter Payton’s attitude in Super Bowl XX was the opposite of Don Maynard’s in Super Bowl III. Payton pouted about the fact that he didn’t score a touchdown. I think the fact that he finally won a Super Bowl as he was getting near the end of his career should have meant something to him.

The Jets in 1968 did lean on their run game (3rd in attempts, 8th in yards, 9th in yards per carry, 1st in touchdowns) but their passing offense was still tremendous for the era (3rd in attempts, 3rd in yards, 4th in touchdowns, 4th fewest interceptions). The offense finished 2nd in points and 3rd in yards. The defense was 4th in points, 1st in yards, 2nd against the pass, and 1st against the run. This documentary of America’s game is the most interesting one to watch. It talks about true underdogs, how football was a true tough sport, lots of controversy to look back (Heidi game), and that ANYONE can win the super bowl.
This might be the greatest pro football video I have ever seen. I remember the Heidi game, the '68 Super Bowl.
This was the game that made Football Football. Quarterbacks today with their high flying stats wouldn't be able to compete in this era with that defensive players were allowed to do to QB's back then. Real men then... I know I sound like an old man (I am 50) but it is true.
Plus defensive backs could make contact with wide receivers up and down the field before the quarterback threw the ball

One day she walks in, looks @ me directly & said: "Mr. Murillo, why don't you enlighten us all, are you planning on Passing!?" She said that because during the semester I was completely lost & all my open class answers were always wrong! It was during the Football Season, & I didn't have the time to even watch a quarter of Football, & it was slowly killing me inside. I responded to her & said: "ABSOLUTELY NOT, I'm gonna drop back 15 yards & PUNT!" The classroom exploded with laughter, & many students started to pound on their table tops. @ that moment, It became a class filled with unruly 7th graders, all while the Professor & I just stared @ one another, as she never moved, still holding her brief case in hand. As the explosion from the laughter grew louder & louder, she walked out of class. Before she did that, she gave me a look of: 'I'm gonna get your Ass on the Final Exam." 3 years earlier, 545 students started Law School, & only 102 graduated... A 7 year old kid from Pittsburgh emulated Joe Willie's classic dropback and quick release. Namath himself said that he threw the football better than he ever did. The young man's name was Dan Marino.
Joe's arm may have been a little bit stronger, but Dan's release just a tad quicker. But Joe was quick. Marino, was an offensive lineman's dream. Balls coming out quick. No sacks. Both similar. Knee problems, but quick in the pocket. Footwork, release, seeing the field, always in attack mode.
Marinos release was as fast but nobody dropped back faster or farther than Namath ... Elway was close

I was 15 years old in high school and me and two of my buddies bet on " Joe Willie" and the Jets ! My dad and his generation hated the long haired hippie with the white shoes and fur coats ! Thank you New York Jets. When you won that Super Bowl you didn’t just win it for your franchise, you won it for the AFL. You have to wonder how things may have been different if The Jets and The Chiefs didn’t win Super Bowl 3 and 4. You did a great service of putting the AFL as a even talented league with the NFL.

Namath is in the HOF, and most certainly deserves it. His oversized persona got the attention. Also well deserved. Matt Snell was a guy that got the job done. Big tough durable backs often don’t get the love they deserve. Reminds me of #22 with the Titans, Derrick Henry. He’s 6’3” and 250 lbs and can run like a RB. Now that’s saying something. But just like Snell he isn’t getting the love he should. He’s a great back.
I knew Derrik was a monster when he was at Alabama. Perhaps the best RB in the game today. Big, strong, fast, the whole package. What he did in the playoffs was amazing, but I really wasn't suprised. (I'm not a Titans fan, but I rooted for them, except KC game,my grandson likes Chiefs, so I rooted for KC) Now if Dallas could get it together, old Papa (me) would be happy!😁
The only problem I see with this program is that the trophy shown at the beginning is the wrong trophy. It wasn’t the Lombardi Trophy then, it was the AFL-NFL World Championship trophy with the logos of both leagues engraved on it.
Im not a jets fan and was born way after this but man what a story of a legendary team.
This was the first SB I watched, and I probably wouldn't have watched it if my best friend hadn't been a rabid Colts fan. Poor guy, he still wants to see NY nuked.

Jets linebacker Larry Grantham grabbed that game ball at the end - I wonder where it is today? Probably worth about $5 million to some crazy Jets fan.
Another component of this was the fact that the Jets' legacy started with the New York Titans, who went bankrupt in '62 while playing in front of family and friends at the decaying Polo Grounds...a whole lot of terrific players were brought in to surround and complement Namath, and Weeb Ewbank and a cache of great assistants "coached 'em up"...

I used to go up to the Peekskill Military Academy every day after work to watch the Jets practice in 1965. Joe would hang out downtown and was as nice a guy as you can imagine! The '69 Super Bowl was the best game I have ever watched!
I was in the Us Navy at Lemoore NAS that weekend and was on duty. I was a young man that loved that game. Joe you are a winner.

Watched this game I was absolutely stunned, the Jets won. Had friends who the entire time before the game were talking about how the Colts would kill the Jets,(TBH that's what every one thought)after the game, those SAME kids said "I knew the Jets would win!" Any way this & SB 4 proved the AFL was on par with the NFL. IMO. I was 11 years old then, my how time flies.
In the span of a year 3 teams from Baltimore -Colts ,Orioles and Bullets -lost championship games to 3 teams from NYC -Jets , Mets , and Knicks

It was huge, the Chiefs MANHANDLING the Vikes the next year was huge as well. I think over confidence, may have contributed to Colts & Vikings losses. Still, it was so long ago, I was in 5th grade for SB3 & 6th for SB4. Still the Chiefs had a huge O line, a great QB a defense 2nd to none. Jets had a great team too, Snell was the real hero of that game. Jets defense played lights out. IMO. Oh well, I can barely play catch with my grandson now. He's 10. Loves the game.

I was in 8th grade in Baltimore that year. If I'd understood betting at that age, I could have cleaned up. Baltimoreans were so confident in a Colts victory.
This was the last time I was truly excited about the outcome of the Super Bowl - my favorite teams from each league were in it, so it was a win-win!

Gerry Philbin was under rated.
Absolutely right. Their whole defense was under rated. No Hall of Famers - but a lot of GREAT players who were clutch players and they played well together. during this run it was often the defense with great plays in pressure moments that turned the tide. I was a 10th grader in 68 and followed Jets closely. Philbin was a bad dude. and very very professional.
He was feared. Back then, those players were iron men. They had the bump & run defensive backs, the D linemen could head slap O line men & QBs as well. Different game now. There are a few people playing today who could fit right in. Remember Tatum if the Raiders? He destroyed people with his hits. I don't think Ronnie Lott could get by with today's rules. There were big hitters, in those days.

As a surviving Baltimore Colts fan I always hated Joe after this game. When Stan White blitzed and blindsided him in a regular season game and seperated his shoulder a few years later 65000 at Memorial Stadium stood up and cheered. But as I have entered the twilight of my life I really like the guy. His reverence of Unitas and Eubank is probably why. In sports you can win all your regular season games be the MVP but if you can't win in the post season well your Fran, Marino and Kelly. Winning is everything......Vince Lombardi
Same here. Old Cowboy fan, myself. All those guys I hated on opposing teams, I actually respect now, there were some great players. Colts beat Dallas in SB5, thought I never be happy again! Hated the Colts!LoL Now when my grandson & I watch, he'll say "Oh that guy sucks!" I tell him, "Listen son the last guy on the bench is a stud, he wouldn't be on the team. All these guys on every team are great players. Respect them for being good enough to make an NFL roster." "I know Papa, you say it all the time, but that guy sucks!" LoL (he's a big kid, plays football, with the kids two yrs older. He whoops head on defense. Shame I'm so old, he's got the talent, the size,but I'm after him about his work ethic. As far as Colts go , the funny thing is when you watch the nfl documentary of their 1970 season & championship, and listen to Bubba Smith & Mike Curtis, you get the impression that despite winning that SB, they still can't get over the loss of SB III, all these years later.

Humans were tougher back then.From our army to dog catchers.We had a cataclysmic cultural shift for many reasons.I believe the primary drivers being our screwed up women.....tough is masculine which is defective, and technology.When I grew up every kid could run a 2 miler.Today .70 of our military recruits can't pass a basic fitness test.We overall were tougher then.Then the gloria stenheims,hugh hefner types started to tell us how wrong that all was.I am not sure today's construction worker has the same grit as a NASA engineer of back then.

Buddy Ryan was the defensive coordinator. He sure looked much different (thinner, with tie) than he did when he led the Bears' defense 17 years later.

In todays game, Joe might have used free agency to go to a better team when he was younger. Of the 9 healthy seasons he was with the Jets, the Jets sucked 5-6 of them. Especially later in the 1970s. The reality is, Joe never played at 100% healthy.

My Beloved Mom suddenly dies in my arms 6 weeks B4 my Law School Finial Exams; 1 exam, 5 topics over 36 weeks of lectures/topic! @ her wake, I gave a heart felt eulogy to the great Ppl that attended. Before I concluded my eulogy, I said: "Joe Willie Namath once said, & now I'm going to say it, 'I Guarantee' that 6 weeks from today, I will walk across the stage for my Law School Graduation..." .........& I did! Thank you Joe Willie Namath for saying that. Your words inspired a entire generation of good American people.... To this day, my Federal Taxation Final still wake me up in a cold fucken sweat. A Final grade of 79% was required in order for you to pass her class, & I scored a manly 79.8%. During the Fall Semester, @ the beginning of Federal Taxation class, the Professor decided to pick on me. We met for class on Mon/Wed/Fri, & class lasted 2 hours/class. 5 minutes B4 class ended, she would take roll-call. 3 unexcused absences, & you were automatically dropped. One day she walks in, looks @ me directly & said: "Mr. Murillo, why don't you enlighten us all, are you planning on Passing!?" She said that because during the semester I was completely lost & all my open class answers were always wrong! It was during the Football Season, & I didn't have the time to even watch a quarter of Football, & it was slowly killing me inside. I responded to her & said: "ABSOLUTELY NOT, I'm gonna drop back 15 yards & PUNT!" The classroom exploded with laughter, & many students started to pound on their table tops. @ that moment, It became a class filled with unruly 7th graders, all while the Professor & I just stared @ one another, as she never moved, still holding her brief case in hand. As the explosion from the laughter grew louder & louder, she walked out of class. Before she did that, she gave me a look of: 'I'm gonna get your Ass on the Final Exam." 3 years earlier, 545 students started Law School, & only 102 graduated... Joe Willie Namath damn near got me killed! Still loving you Joe Willie....
The Championship wins by the JETS and the CHIEFS changed Pro Football .... In fact, I wish the AFL & NFL had never merged, so EVERY Super Bowl would feature the champions of both leagues going head-to-head for it ALL ...
Unitas did give the colts hope and finally scored. Having been out the entire season he wasn’t going to bring them back like the old days.
That is a foolish statement. While impossible to predict, had he put in the game earlier, he may gave had enough time to lead to several scores. He led the offense on an 80 yard drive late in the game. He simply did not have enough time for any other scores.
bbmtge - I’m a Unitas Fan, IMO the greatest QB/ player ever. But I’m merely referencing what his teammate Bubba Smith said, that it was a deficit that even Unitas couldn’t comeback from because, it seemed that the team, coach and owner were hell bent on losing the game:

Great comment, Dwight. I grew up on Long Island. Huge Jets fan. My father took me to the Oakland Jets AFL Championship game and I remember it like it was yesterday. The bomb to Maynard was as close to a miracle as I will ever see - especially in those conditions. Despite all that we all were getting ready to lose, until Lamonica threw that stupid pass. Sports Gods intervened and Jets were on to Super Bowl. I LOVED both Maynard and Alworth. Maynard was faster than almost anyone in the game at the time. Alworth - poetry in motion.
