Jaylen Brown - Bubble Super Scorer

  • Jaylen Brown was already having a career year in 2020. He posted career bests across the board: 20.3 points (up from 13.0 in 2018-19), on 48.1% from the field, 38.2% from deep, and 72.4% from the line. His number elevated slightly in the playoffs: 21.8 points per game on more shot attempts, three pointers, and free throws. There are very few things Jaylen CANNOT do, so Brad Stevens and the Boston Celtics ask Brown to do a bit of everything. Without a true point guard on the floor, Jaylen is asked to initiate the offense. He finished as the C’s second leading scorer in the playoffs. He was routinely tasked with taking some of the tougher matchups defensively. Brown turns 24 later this year, but he has only missed the Eastern Conference Finals ONCE in his four years as a professional. It is a worrying thing to think about for the rest of the league, but Brown's best is yet to come.
    Jaylen Brown is more than just a great basketball player. He’s also the youngest man ever elected as the Vice President of the National Basketball Player’s Association. He’s one of the most demonstrative players off the court. He drove 15 hours through the night to join a peaceful protest in his home state of Georgia. He literally leads from the front.
    Linked is a phenomenal piece by ESPN that everyone should take the time to read (www.espn.com/n...)
    The two best parts of Jaylen's offensive game are incredibly complimentary: he is a SPECIAL straight line driver and he has the ability to catch and shoot from deep at a great clip.
    Nekias Duncan (follow him @NekiasNBA on Twitter) wrote an amateur (read: it wasn't amateur, it was really good) scouting report for the Eastern Conference Finals and said that the best way to defend Jaylen on the perimeter is with “hard, but controlled close-outs.”
    Brown will burn you on an overly aggressive closeout - it is basically a blow by and a bucket. The best bet in containing him is to force him away from his two strengths BUT he is ever evolving, as evidenced by his improving in-between game. The video is structured so that it showcases that he is gaining greater comfort at taking what the defense gives him rather than just hard charging at the rim and either contorting himself to get a tough shot off or turning the ball over.
    From 4:19 - 5:50, it’s mostly straight line drives. In one dribble, Jaylen just about gets to the rim from the three point line. He’s strong enough that he will absorb contact and finish with force, likely drawing an AND1. He’s slowly mastering raising the leg on his rack attacks so that it shields the ball (and his body) from defenders. Bam Adebayo already learned the hard way that Brown's knees are pretty formidable.
    Here is the aforementioned article by Nekias:

    In my opinion, Jaylen Brown is the best player on the Celtics. BOTH ways. Bar none.... Celtics staff and the media want it to be Jayson Tatum so bad, guess I'm alone thinking he should be the number 1 option.

      Tatum actually is the top guy in Boston, team-wise, with a 161+/- last season. Skill-wise, not by a long shot. They're definitely even on that scale. Tatum isn't as good a defender because he plays more off ball defense and that's what was asked to do by ex coach Brad Stevens. While they're all good individual players, what we've really lacked was chemistry, and Tatum has shown he's quite the playmaker, although he can improve on chopping down on turnovers. A lot of his turnovers are head scratchers to me too, but he's still very young he's got only time to improve and deepen his game along with Jaylen Brown and the rest of our young roster. With Al Horford returning, the one guy that I really hope we can evolve is Robert Williams III. Dude plays big for 6'8 and has shown he can pass. If he can become more versatile down low and get a jumper, it'd be so much easier inside the paint for JT and JB. I personally won't put any of the two above one another though. They're intangible counterparts. What I said above was really just an analysis from majority of the games I've watched through the past years.

      True! The gap between them is pretty small. Brown is more locked in on both the offense/defense. He also takes better shots , and doesn't panic or mess up the flow of the game.

    • @tdfhion9936
      @tdfhion9936 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willthomas2310 I’d say Tatum is slightly better. Tatum is a better team/off ball defender (led playoffs in defensive win shares) whilst brown is a better on ball defender. Tatum is also a better playmaker averaging 5 assists (same as Jokic in playoffs) whilst jaylen had more turnovers than assists. Jaylen was underused but I think if he and Tatum share the offensive load somewhat equally they’d have probably beaten the Heat

    • @wym348
      @wym348 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tdfhion9936 that synopsis is spot on. They're pairing is kinda perfect imo. I just feel like Brad Stevens needs to be more creative with his off ball schemes/dynamics. His motion offense is just way too shitty when rubber needs to hit the road in pivotal moments. He needs to have them run dynamics similar to that of a high-low or a triangle offense using JT/JB as the two main cogs/keys. Kemba Walker would fall right in place because at best he's a 3rd best player on a championship team and these 2 dudes are ready to prove somethings next season. Sad Brown got snubbed for Allstar when his numbers were basically the same as Tatums.

  • @t-mofisher8922

    he really needs to get more touches in crunch time next year... i was dissapointed when he would get to do his thing for 3 quarters only for the 4th quarter offense to be Jayson, Marcus and Kemba throwing up jumpers in the playoffs.
    Brad has increased his role year by year, but next year he needs to treat the Jays as options 1a and 1b rather than Tatum as 1 and Brown as 2

      @@yeetyeet4966 That is what they paid kemba to do. He is an all-star, but unfortunately he wasn't himself during the playoffs. Smart is the one that shouldn't be getting more shots, outside of the big 3.

    • @yeetyeet4966
      @yeetyeet4966 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willthomas2310 I think when Kemba became inconsistent second round, they needed to switch it up. From that point on, Marcus was way more efficient and productive compared to Kemba. On top of that, Kemba sold on defense. Completely wrecked him. Edit: Just to add, they pay Gordon big bucks too. Regardless of an injury, he wasn’t producing the same so he’s sitting backseat now, that should apply with Kemba, doubly so because he can’t play defense.

    • @willthomas2310
      @willthomas2310 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yeetyeet4966 If kemba wasn't feeling it, and Smart was stepping up for him. Then that's cool, smart just. sometimes gets carried away with chucking up too many shots. At times smart tends to help and hurt the team, which can be conflicting. Hayward just didn't work out here, they should be looking to move him. This was only kemba's first year, while hayward has been here longer.... and had more opportunities but couldn't stay healthy.

    • @yeetyeet4966
      @yeetyeet4966 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willthomas2310 I hear you, but Marcus was still more consistent than kemba, Kemba showed up maybe 2 games round 2 and 3. Unless Kemba can stay consistent, I wouldn’t want him shooting over Marcus. But I do agree, some shots Marcus takes are wild. But at least he makes up for it on the defensive end and hustle.
      Gordon does need to go. Really need a stretch big. Horford was perfect

    That first poster is so underrated and not talked about. It was a 1 step gather and jumped from a good distance. Just nasty athleticism. Him and Jayson Tatum just needs to stay healthy because honestly they can be the best wing duo in the league. JB and JT can score anywhere on the floor. JB is athletic, quick, and has great on ball defense. While JT is a more technical guy, very shifty still with his handles and footwork, and play great off ball defense while still being a decent on ball defender. They're still young and they only have room to grow.
