The entire soundcheck the day before was shot, everything was shot from the construction of the stage to the fireworks display at the end of the gig. Look on the channel EpaxB (I'm assuming he/she is one of the owners of the footage) they have even commented on one of their own uploads that the disclaimer at the beginning of this video is wrong and that there is loads more footage of the whole show out there and that only a handful of people have seen it, apparently someone somewhere doesn't want this fully out there and had only agreed to snippets of the gig to be released.
Didn’t go , could have but decided not as I had seen them maybe 20 times before including in 87 in Manchester and infront of 40 people in all the London Polly venues and Alexander Palace so didn’t want to go to this - really regret it ! As other have said best band ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever and so on for ever love the roses for ever , thank you for the Music x
It begins with a disclaimer that is a fan made video shot by an amateur ... now, is it just me or is this the most energy captured, the best audio mix, and the closest Ian has been in the area code of "In Tune" of any live footage of a Roses show? I've hear Noel comment that the sound was crap (backed by a lot of other folk's opinion who were there) because of the wind but this video provides a the most distinctly "live" sound and I'm just floored. From the opening on, the energy is just unbelievable. I'm wondering why this is regarded more as an "event" rather than a concert because this the Roses I thought I was going to see when they finally made it out the States. THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sound on the day was absolutely crap, it was drifting about so badly and I don't recall it being particularly windy, know that Evans scrimped on the production and didn't spend enough on the PA. Most of this footage must've been filmed from the scaffolding tower that the main desk was situated in, judging the height and angle of the shot, how an ordinary fan got up there and stayed there with a video camera makes me think it was someone either connected with the band or the road crew who's filmed it. Brings back some memories, funny that all the 'major' Roses gigs I was at weren't that memorable [this, Aly Paly, but not Blackpool] but the smaller ones either just before they made it big [Bradford] or just after [Leeds] were the best gigs I've ever been to, at Leeds Poly they were absolutely mind-blowing!
***** It wouldn't surprise me if a new album is released next year, and some sort of "deluxe edition" comes with the full vid of this gig. Someone at Sony / close to the band must have the full recording.
sugar ray robinson. They were very, very good times mate, I won't deny it, great music, good friends [and some other things that I won't mention in public.]
And things were never the same again. Not a phone or camera in sight, everyone in the moment. As a committed Roses fan in my 50th year now, it makes me melancholy about what they could have been. I was with Oasis from small shows to the huges ones - great, great times, but a part of me will always feel that we missed the next Beatles. Ian has gone on to do some profound work... but is guess sometimes the star is too bright. And I still want to know who's got Ian's bongo's when he slid them down at the end...
I think they would've used phones... If they had them! Lmao. Back in 1990 there weren't any camera phones. But I agree, it's so much nicer to live in the moment, and not see everyone shoving their phones in the air for their Instagram story, like anyone cares, with the other 20,000 ig stories. But it does create the opportunity for good memories, and not losing your friends! Lol
@@Ravioliyt It does, but can you be "there" - in the moment ? free in mind and spirit ? if your watching it though a screen ? As the man (ian brown) said - I think it was at the warm-up gig in Parr hall before the Heaton park shows,"put your phones away, you're taking a memory of an experience you haven't lived..." -

If this footage has been edited down to 10 mins, surely the whole concert was taped on video at the time? Someone must have it! Listened to the bootleg on cassette for years, and agree with other comments that it sounded great.
Such rare video footage like this only adds to the urban legendary status of that gig. I was 13 in May '90 and didn't go, but would have loved to have been there.

I wasn't far from the structure in the middle of the field. I remember someone near me selling drugs and there was an orderly queue. Seriously. I miss those hippy days.
I really wish I was around during the time of Oasis, Stone Roses etc. This is real music, not Rihanna shouting the same word over and fucking over. Here after having bought a ticket for the Spike Island Resurrection gig in May. Even though it’s just tribute bands I can honestly say I can’t wait to experience what my parents did 30 years ago, in the exact same location, jamming to the exact same tunes. Going to be mental
I’ve heard the stories about the sound being blown away by the wind coming from the estuary but I haven’t seen a story about the band being crap. I have mates who went to the gig and one of them wasn’t into E and cannabis so he watched it sober and he said the band were great. The rest of my mates who went were so pilled up that they can’t remember!!
Thank you for posting this. I wasn't alive when the stone roses were together so to see this is amazing, I'd do anything to travel back in time to spike island if it were possible
A lot of people who were there that day say that the sound was bad, but it sounds really clear on the video. I've also read that the "fan" that shot this footage was one of the crew and recorded it from one of the sound towers, which would explain why it's so clear.
So many young people looking back on this and saying how amazing it is. That's how punk started! Kids looking back and thinking older music was better and then changing it all up and making it there own, it'll happen again!
Mad to think this fucking happened now we’re looking back at it 30,000 people woke up that day knowing where they were going knowing what they were doing peace and love with everyone just there for the music the one thing which brought the pre internet generation looking at it and thinking about it .IT WAS A MASTERPEICE !!!!!
The Stone Roses exploded out of Manchester in the late 1980s, heralding a new era of British music that blended jangly guitars, infectious grooves, and anthemic swagger. Their self-titled debut album was a masterpiece, a collection of timeless tracks like I Wanna Be Adored and Fool’s Gold that captured the spirit of a generation hungry for something fresh and transcendent. For a brief moment, the Roses were untouchable, their sound the heartbeat of the Madchester scene and their gigs the stuff of legend, none more so than their triumphant 1990 Spike Island show-a Woodstock for the baggy generation. But the magic proved fleeting. Internal strife, legal battles, and the painstaking delays in releasing their follow-up album, Second Coming, eroded their momentum. By the mid-1990s, the Roses had withered, undone by the weight of expectation and the tides of Britpop. Still, their music endures, a reminder of a time when the Stone Roses seemed poised to rule the world, if only for a fleeting, glorious moment.
This DOES sound better than on the day, but I would not change a thing( simply formed the building blocks to my life ) the whole day, the people I met & the atmosphere
This is quality footage ! Heard it existed but never thought i'd see this. I had a bootleg tape (!) of this years ago which sounded crap in comparison. Love the music they come on to as well!
I was at the Etihad too, Saturday night. I'll be honest and say I'm not a massive Roses fan, I like them a lot but I'm into other bands more, but what I will say is that that gig will stick in my mind forever- the flares, the crowd/atmosphere, the music.... it was an experience. My uncle went to Spike Island (we come from Runcorn so not too far away), he said it was one of the worst performances he's ever seen from a band, but you had to be there just to say you were there. I was too young plus I wasn't really into the indie scene, I was a Floyd fan at the time, still am!
I'm 14 nearly 15 there is no music like this any more, I have had this music passed down from my dad to me and for once I'm jealous that he got to see the stone Rosesm

THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i feel the same, mate. it's mind boggling.
*****
It wouldn't surprise me if a new album is released next year, and some sort of "deluxe edition" comes with the full vid of this gig. Someone at Sony / close to the band must have the full recording.
*****
ya jammy git!, i envy you, mate.
sugar ray robinson.
As the man (ian brown) said - I think it was at the warm-up gig in Parr hall before the Heaton park shows,"put your phones away, you're taking a memory of an experience you haven't lived..." -
Can confirm that Ian Brown shouting at you to "DO IT NOW" is one hell of a way to cure your own procrastination.
"who is and who isn't"
i was 16. i remember my neighbours getting a minibus to spike island, remember seeing them return. i was gutted i didn't go. but, mani made us a brew, 2 days later, so, not all bad. good memories.
If this footage has been edited down to 10 mins, surely the whole concert was taped on video at the time? Someone must have it! Listened to the bootleg on cassette for years, and agree with other comments that it sounded great.
it was supposedly never 'officially' recorded. but there has to be someone who has it
@@timmynoshoe8404 yeah, the fact that this is listed as edited means the whole thing exists, but nobody is releasing it.
fucking hell look at all the crowd bounce, today's music all you'd see is the front row going nuts.
Such rare video footage like this only adds to the urban legendary status of that gig. I was 13 in May '90 and didn't go, but would have loved to have been there.
I love the "DO IT NOW!" bit. I actually find quite uplifting and inspirational.
The time was now we had 3 full car's down from ABERDEEN never to be forgotten what a bounce no mobile phones and no cops on the island the joint's and the Ez were everywhere old man now 52 LOVE THAT TIME
@@stevenanderson8620 Nice! I was only 5 then 😂
You could feel the ground moving under your feet never seen so many pairs of fairs in all my day all hail the ROSES
It's great to see footage like this. I didn't get the chance to go to this event, I was sitting on a hill at the bottom of a school in Runcorn, looking at the back of the stage from across the water.. The sound was amazing while hearing the Roses, aswell as 808 state..
I was 27 and i was stood near the back with my mates , awesome , so glad to see this thank you
I wasn't far from the structure in the middle of the field. I remember someone near me selling drugs and there was an orderly queue. Seriously. I miss those hippy days.
Is this genuine then?
3:13 geez! the crowd are insane. bouncing up and down. i've never seen that. they meant something.
I really wish I was around during the time of Oasis, Stone Roses etc. This is real music, not Rihanna shouting the same word over and fucking over. Today's music and gigs will never come close to replicating what these did 27 years ago. I'm only 14 and far different from almost everyone else my age. Really hope people today could like this instead of today's shit🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋
Andrew Bateman I'm with you on this my dad brought me up on the stone roses happy Mondays and oasis used to sing me sally cinnamon as a lullaby
get a band learn an insturment
ahaha shut up andrew u utter plum
Andrew Bateman you're a living meme
i agree. i’m obsessed with 60’s music as i’ve been brought up listening to it. so much better than some of the crap we have today
33 years to the day I WAS THERE
I wish I was there. I am 18, My generation need a lesson in proper music! By the way love how Fools Gold sounds here.
Tell me about it I'm 15 and I wish I could of been growing up listening to this good shit instead of the crap today
I know where you coming from buddy..I've been a roses fan since I was 14, I'm a 38 year old git now but nothing quite sounds like fools gold....off to watch them in Manchester in June 'sun hat ready😉)...you take it steady fella
I'm 13 and I was luckily brought up on Pulp, The Stone Roses, Oasis etc.
Moreland 97 shut up
Seen them live in Leeds when I was 14 and I'd give anything to have been at spike island
I hope the whole gig is in celluloid & then we can hopefully be able to digitally enhance the sound & vision. Definitely a seminal moment in my life. I am the resurrection!!
I'm 67 and I was there with my f family and 2 dogs what a day the best of myy life
@@BloodSweatAndMeth so they told me at the gates so i handed him the leads told him to look after them and carried on walking then he shouted me back smiling and handed me the leads my 2 eldest sons got me 2 tickets for father's day gift from Smash Hits magazine so we all went 12y old son 13yold son there 13yold mate my girlfriend 1y old daughter plus pushchair and my 3y old toddler son i also managed to get in 5lt home wine one of the best father's day gifts ever beat's socks and underpants anyday
I was there I'm forty four and was at Glasgow green the same tour both excellent gigs.brings a tear to my eye
For what it's worth. i think this is crew shot footage. from the mixer / lighting tower and tripod shot. nevertheless an important find.
i was there..i,m 47 now..and hardley remember lol..week after i was in blackpool for inspiral carpets..great days
Thank you for finding and uploading this! Amazing footage! Never seen this before, cheers. 😘
People say that the sound was shit but was a fuckin amazing atmosphere also drug heaven
Cannae believe am going too see this band in 2016 never thought it was gonna happen n now it is ✌️🍋
See em at the Etihad in 2016, fuckin brilliant!!🤪😁
Makes me sad that this will never happen again, I’m 15 and it’s sad that our generation that actually appreciates this music will never get to see it
Here after having bought a ticket for the Spike Island Resurrection gig in May. Even though it’s just tribute bands I can honestly say I can’t wait to experience what my parents did 30 years ago, in the exact same location, jamming to the exact same tunes. Going to be mental
Can’t wait meself man going to be unreal
How was it?.
A lot of people said Ian was crap and the sound was shit but it was the wind blowing the sound away
wow 770+ mph winds, sounds pretty rough.
Yeah, nobody thought of what effect holding a gig right on a riverbank might have on the sound.
I’ve heard the stories about the sound being blown away by the wind coming from the estuary but I haven’t seen a story about the band being crap. I have mates who went to the gig and one of them wasn’t into E and cannabis so he watched it sober and he said the band were great. The rest of my mates who went were so pilled up that they can’t remember!!
i think Ian never sounded good live ever
30 years ago today. 30 years! Damn.
I’m back, 30 years ago🍋
Love the music they come on to as well!
there are some good cd and vinyl bootlegs around so it was recorded in full somewhere
Unpopular opinion: This was better than Queen's Live Aid concert.
Yeah. But no. ;)
Better than any fucking band at live aid ☮️
Of course. I never really liked Queen
NO Competition... 🍋
@@harryroberts2403 The Roses made queen look like little babies. Anyway I always hated queen. Total shite 🍋
I was there!!! great to see this... brings it all back :)))))))
Today that crowd would just be standing there filming with their iPads.
DoctorGlass .....or waving their flags if it was a festival
Nah, I was at the Etihad gig and it was flares and beer being thrown. not a single IPad in sight.
Ye,s me too Billy, fucking amazing, everyone went mental. Best gig of my life!
DoctorGlass who's the dancing weirdo not bez is it
Did Cressa just have to do that same side to side shuffle non stop for the whole show? That must have been the best job in the world!
He had a nominal role adjusting Squire's effects pedals. It was mainly a 'Bez' vibes role though
@@lucasm3879 not pedals but just a simple multi FX unit
I'm 14 nearly 15 there is no music like this any more, I have had this music passed down from my dad to me and for once I'm jealous that he got to see the stone Rosesm
Gotta love how everyone is bouncing in unison.
ah man thank you!!!! Made me shed a tear or two - what a fab gig memorieeeees lol
First time footage of a gig that was criminally never filmed & subsequently unreleased too of coarse - so v interesting viewing here for first time - audio's pretty good too - thanx for uploading. Peace - Love IS The Answer. Rx
The best day, with all its imperfections. Would go back in a heartbeat
This makes me sad because I'm only 16
I wasn't a very good gig really. sound was awful. you are lucky to catch them today's age. better sound better organised gig. and a mobile to catch it on. much better today than then.
Nah to be there in the moment would be better than watching their retirement fund project nowerdays
+Bevend M8 - please i am trying to ease his pain.
I am sad too becouse I am only 26
Don't worry mate. You are part of the family.
Saw them at Legends in Warrington (a night club under the Rugby League Club stand) in March 89, 14 months later I was back to see them here - a fantastic, wild ride
They held the world in their hands! Only got to see them play once at The Ally Pally. Amazing gig.
The bassline at the start is from “Small Time Hustler” by The Dismasters
Pretty sure it's the Instrumental version of that track (although it could be one made just for them using that track).
Was there on my 17th Birthday so glad there's some footage from that day
Never tire of watching this
A great day and the best speed ever off some local scallys. 🙌
Holy shit man....... Crowd look out this world !!!!
25 thumb's down? The sound was shit on the day but what a day! History made on this day
I was there that night.great concert.
Being from Widnes it still blows my mind to the fact this happened I know my time machine destination
Wool
crowd look well up for it right the way through, no chin stroking going on
I often think about that show,it was the last time i saw my wallet.
F
That’s a W shows you had a class time
I lose my wallet to travel back in time and attend that gig!!
I'd give anything to see this gig in full like this...
Missed out on this, but I'm from Canada and I was only 13. Cool there's footage.
Thanks for sharing fella, great footage :-)
I can smell the E in the crowd from here man!
I didn't think that E has a smell.
i love cresssaaa
This is mega! Thanks so much for posting this.
Amazing, I would've paid big money to be there unfortunately I was only 8, the energy looks amazing something you don't get today with live bands such a shame
Seeing them in Marlay Park in two days, absolutely madferit
Pure magic!!! 🍋🍋🍋🍋
I wish I could go back in time, I would be there.
Wendy Nicholson
You and a few million others. 🙂
My dad was one lucky man to have seen that
This was 12 years before I was born. I'm only 15, gutted I wasn't round to see them in their prime
I'll be there at the etihad on Saturday watching them, can't wait 🍋🍋
