Ian Brown acknowledged that Waterfall was primarily John's composition and 'Don't Stop' was John playing around with his masterpiece, backwards. Fantastic.
Yeah, but when John took over all songwriting on the 2nd album, the output declined. John's a Led Zeppelin, Rock and Roll guy - all the groove comes from Ian
Don’t stop is much more than a reversed waterfall - it seems to use that as a foundation then layer lots of other stuff over it - creating a sort of mellow cousin to waterfall and takes the album into a mellow psychedelic place - it’s my favourite track off the album. I love don’t stop. X
Yesterday ( 14/11/2024) I was laid off for the 6th time this year, I’m a labourer, it’s how things are right now. I come here to cheer myself up. Listening to Ian Brown, watching Reni seemingly having the time of his life. Watching Mani act like a child with a grin from ear to ear and seeing John be the coolest man on the planet, it makes me realise that life is all good. I’ll get another job. By having access to music like this I’ll ALWAYS be happy ❤
People who think this band is all about Ian Brown and John Squire have totally missed the point. Mani and Reni create a groove bigger than the grand canyon! Seen them at Heaton Park (which felt like the biggest party ive ever been to btw!) and Finsbury Park but would love to hear their whole set like this.
a great point. without reni they'd just sound like a grunge band (see the second coming gigs). people forget how important a groove is, not just the melody. we have evolved to dance, and reni and mani brought the funk. not many bands have the funk.
People love 4 peices. Let's face, ever since The Beatles. All you need here, a singer with some percussion in his hands, a talented drummer backing the singer's vocals, a great guitarist and excellent bass player. A tight unit.
i remember being 16 in 1994, buying this album and being totally blown away by the fact that they did waterfall and then immediately did waterfall backwards. that they can play it live is even cooler. it still impresses me i wake, i steal, look how i feel- loose
It's amazing to see it when you've heard the album version. I was a bit young when the album came out so didn't really properly listen until around 20 years ago. This is majestic.
All talented musicians. good lord what chemistry. I have never seen this before. Most successful bands would kill for just a drop of this. Hope they use it and make us happy and better.
Absolutely magical. What an incredible guitarist John Squire really is and as for Ian and Reni's harmonies, brilliant just brilliant. Long live The Roses!
Reni is the reason I started to play drums 20+ years ago and to see him better than ever now is again awe inspiring - I was there at Heaton Park but to see his work (beats and bv's) this up close is just mind - blowing...
Did you see/have you heard his drum solo intro to Resurrection at Finsbury Park? I think it was Mani who said he would've paid to watch Reni play on his own, I couldn't agree more.
Seriously impressive that they learned how to play this so well considering the album version was pretty much just a backmasked version of Waterfall with a few overdubs... and Reni is still the heart of the Roses music... great stuff...
Hypnodelica I know. There was a point in giving us Don't Stop in the first place. Hard making the lyrics out back in the day, but it was a very emotional tune and I interpreted the lyrics as I pleased. Think we all did. The original was trippy as hell. It's a favourite of mine.
Kelly14UK These blokes probably sold their soul back in the day. How can you make such a great song as "Waterfall" and then do it backwards with different lyrics and make it awesome again?
*-* Ask the Starchild *-* Paul Schroeder, I think was the producer's name. He's the artist on those backwards records. You probably know this already, but I'll post it for the benefit of noobs : Elephant Stone/ Full Fathom Five; Waterfall/ Don't Stop; Made of Stone/ Guernica; Where Angels Play/ Simone and She Bangs The Drums/ I Am Without Shoes.
I always thought this was the Waterfall played backwards...Now....This is just outstanding composing masterpiece of syncopated rhythms and harmonies...Absolute musical craftsman-ship here...And Ian's lyrics to top it up! What else would you wish from the music?

James Beardmore No he's right, this is Waterfall in reverse. Elephant Stone in reverse is a track called Full Fathom Five (which was one of the B-sides to Elephant Stone)
I can't find words special enough to express how much this means to me at the moment. I just keep watching this and Waterfall and it's really helping me through a bad period of my life. Watching Reni really raises my spirits, he's so expressive and the beautiful vocals and rhythms topped off with Squires guitar just 👌
I love the fact u feeling the roses together in the studio, it's a mancz ting, and a brotherly love for them all time, I find it, a Waterfall, lucky boro fc

Mind blowing and brilliant. So blessed to have had this band in my life since 1989. This is my favourite part of the film, even though it’s just in the extra’s. Do hope something is put out at some point , just from these rehearsals. They must have hours and hours and hours of footage.
The more I listen to this, the more amazing and incredible it seems. every nuance.
