Whenever I go over to my grandparents house, we play the shit out of Sequence. We usually do teams of two because there are only three colors of chips in the bag and six of us usually play. I love this game.
As someone who’s been playing this game for years with their family, I disagree that there’s no strategy and playing it can be pretty fun. However, I understand that different people have different opinions and his is perfectly valid. Thanks for giving it a shot!
There are feints but you still have to be able to get specific cards at the right time. Too many feints wastes time. You do need partners though. 2 player is garbage.
@@KesSharann Interesting. It's pretty clear that 3 players is garbage, but I'd never considered that 4 players may be as good (or better) than 2. I'd assumed it would be worse because you have a choice of fewer cards.
Any game can be fun when you play with people you're gonna have fun with. There is more here than in say, chutes and ladders, but not much. I grew up with sequence and eventually got into modern games, they're CRAZY good now. Try out Love Letter or Codenames or Splendor! Anybody could love those games.
I think he downplayed the strategy a little bit. You're deciding whether to use your turn to head off opponents or build toward your own sequence, which requires thinking through the probabilities. Definitely luck heavy but not just luck.
Yeah, if you don't get the right cards (or really if your opponent(s) get all the Jacks) you're basically fucked, but there is definitely some strategy; I still win 9/10 games versus my fiancé. Zone control is *actually*, surprisingly, a thing in the game. Taking risks, working with what you got... I dunno, I think it's pretty fun as a "strategy game that's not complex" which is a useful niche to fill in a boardgame collection. Granted I haven't played Gomoku, which is SungWon's comparison of choice so maybe that's just straight better than Sequence
I guess there CAN be strategy, if you're lucky. But your hand side isn't big enough to put you in the position where you really have to make those choices much.
@@andrewe2057 this isn't true. Your hand in this game is rather large and until the end of a particularly longer match where many spaces are covered, you have a lot of choice. But even in a long game where you have multiple "useless" cards, you're then in a pitched battled to get that 2nd sequence since you are likely tied at 1.
I definitely recommend playing this game in pairs. It ameliorates that "just hoping you pick up the right cards" aspect, as your partner may have helpful cards and also lets you blame someone when the other team wins 😂
I used to play this with my Grandpa when I was a kid, so you bet I clicked when I saw this. My grandpa used to try to cheat by hiding jacks in the vent next to our table. God, I miss my grandpa so much...
For some reason, middle aged and elderly people love this game. I have no idea why, but I guess it's similar to Bingo, another "game" with no actual strategy.
Teams is really fun because you have to try and read your teammate and figure out what they're trying to go for so you can work with them. A lot of it is luck, but theres enough there to keep you thinking if you try to take it seriously. Not my favorite game, but underrated nonetheless.
Ah man I enjoy Sequence. I’ve had this game for years and it’s pretty simple - ultimately it’s good for playing with people who aren’t super into board games Also everything Sungwon said about it is correct
I heavily recommend checking out the game "Punto". It's basically the idea of this but executed well with significantly more strategy and a lot more fun. It's also really cheap and small so really nice to just keep in your car always
Its so weird to hear this have a name, my grandma who's from Mexico, had my grandpa make this game for the family, a few of the cards are changed around, aces were in the center, from the wild corners out it went 7 8 9 10, and the jacks were swapped It was also just perfectly squared, we used the corners of the card, not the full card, we just always called it the board game
I kinda love the "the best thing you get out off this box is two decks of cards and some chips. But hey, maybe you can play a game that's actually fun with that!"
I love this game. My family plays with teams and things get real interesting. One time I decided to only go on the defensive because I was so mad at another player who kept messing up my strategy. I did everything in my power to mess them up - it was pure evil. In the end, I ended up winning by pure accident.
I love this game, my dad made one of these boards before he knew what the game was and more or less made up his own rules, it's great for drunk family night. It really helps if you add extra jacks into the deck and make it so that you need three sequences to win.
The main strategy in sequence comes from choosing which space to place your token, since there are two for each card. You want to choose squares that intersect with the other cards in your hand and/or block your opponents spaces.
This is a game I can pull out at a family gathering and both kids and grandparents can join in - it's certainly not hard to understand or play, but it's interesting enough for the kids with placing chips and being in direct competition, simple enough for the grandparents since it's basically just a card game, and just strategic enough for the people who enjoy more engaging board games to not get bored (because of the jacks, corner pieces and guessing your co-player's plan).
Just learned through this video that I was playing this game totally wrong. The way I played it, all jacks were wilds, and there were no hands. You just drew one card per turn and then you placed the chip on that space. No wonder I hated it.
I like this game in a 2v2 setting but have always ignored the "no table talk" rule. It makes the strategy more than just luck based. But to each their own, that's why there's so many types of games.
I remembered at times playing board games on certain school days instead of doing normal school, and one of the games we got to play was the states and capitals version of this game. Also this game gives you the stuff you need to play poker or Texas hold'em or black Jack or any other card game about gambling.
There’s a little bit more strategy than you give it credit for, you have to decide which cards you want to play first since your opponent could be holding the same card, and you can try and save a card to get your opponent “invested” in building up an area of the board only to completely foil their plans. Overall, you’re right though, just wanted to point out that it’s not solely just sitting and waiting for Jacks.
My dad could be in another room in the house. He seems to have x-ray hearing. Someone can say in a whisper "Sequence". He will come running "Did I hear someone want's to play Sequence." It's pretty much a running joke now. No one really like's playing with him. He seems to always win. Everyone calls him out at cheating. He says with a goofy smile. "I don't cheat, I'm just good at the game." Joking aside it is a pretty fun game to play.
It's one of those games I love playing with my grandparents. Cause it's a super chill game where we can all sit around and talk late into the evening. We made our own board though. It's great for people that don't love learning games with a ton of substance, but never my first choice unless we want something chill to play while chatting.
What a coincidence. We had a custom sequence board made out of plywood that my mom was going to throw out because we hadn't played it years and forgot the rules. I said no that's a waste and kept it anyway, and then you post the rules for it. Thanks!
My entire extended family loves this game for some reason. It's okay enough, i guess, and i think there's more strategy than you implied, but i agree that it's nothing special. Pretty surprising to see so many people in the comments praising it so highly.
I mean sure, It's super simple and is more of the game you play with your parents/grandparents, but just being a connect 5 using cards doesn't make it any worse than any other card-based game. It might not be as tactical or skill-based as some other games that have been reviewed on this channel, but it can still be fun and engaging with the right people sitting around the table.
It's a fun game to play with family when we're all drinking, snacking, and talking. Sometimes the amount of luck and strategy that someone can come out with is cutthroat!
Ahhh my parents used to play this every night after my siblings and I had gone to bed! One of my earliest memories is of sneaking out of bed to watch my parents play this game. I remember being so interested in learning how to play because it was a “grown up” game, but never managed to figure out the rules. By the time I was old enough to understand, we had given the game away.
I think that for your average gamer, this game falls short. However, I found this game to be very fun growing up as a kid and I thereby see it valued as a light hearted, family oriented game for all ages. Its really fun seeing your niece or nephew play the card that gets the sequence!
Hey ProZD you should take like some obscure food suggestions from the comments or put out a community post and then review those wacky foods all in the one video. You would only take a couple probably, but I would love to see a video like that. And they all have to be something you can just like run out and grab at your local store, (I guess if you wanted to you could order the food online) but they have to be like packaged foods and they have to be new to you. I think a lot of people would like to see a video like that, and I would definitely like it.
Even as a kid, I immediately realized that this game was the wrong kind of busted. We house-ruled it to have hands of cards and players could play two cards of the same suit and add up their ranks to secure a higher rank (e.g. two and five of spades would allow you to play on the 7 of spades). and it introduced a bit more agency and therefore fun into the mix, but looking back, it still pales in comparison to the modern classics I wish we'd had back then.
