How To Heat A Chicken Coop In Winter | Do Chickens Need Heat In Winter? Sweeter Heater

- With Fall Comes Winter and we are prepared for the chickens with a Sweeter Heater for our coop this year to keep them warm though the toughest of cold days. This will help them regulate their body temperature and stay warm when we get down to the -40C the best way to keep your chickens warm is to keep them dry and this will defiantly help them dry off if they do get wet in the snow. We also have a thermostat that turns it on and off when it gets colder then -10C and the humidistat turns a fan off or on for ventilation. Heated water dish is also a must as water will freeze unless you plan on visiting your coop several times a day to chip away ice if you have a larger dish.

Really appreciate this video. I've had chickens for the last 4 years (got them during Covid and not knowing what was going to happen next). I've used the red heat lamp before (however, it makes me nervous) and then the constant influx of chicken folks saying chickens don't need heat no matter what. Well, like you living in Alberta, I'm right below you in Montana. Like you, every winter we always have a severe cold front come through. We just got through a hard 30-45 below zero week-long pull. We had the same last winter. I only have 5 chickens and so I just brought them into the house in dog kennels for the severe cold. They were extremely thankful, trust me, haha. I also did it because, yes, it was just bitter ass cold. There were findings of dead, froze to death wildlife, and I found a few wild birds around the house, froze to death. I don't feel bad for bringing in the chickens. They have become my little buddies (but they are still chickens) and as humans, it is our duty to care for our animals and keep them happy and healthy. I'm going to look into the sweeter heater as you suggested and switch a few things around in my coop this spring to make next winter more comfortable. I utilize straw, the deep litter method, heated waterers, automatic doors, etc., like you, but I think I'll look into alternate forms of heating. Because, it's gets damn ass cold here in winter! If you seen our most recent video the sweeter heater worked till -30C but with the vortex coming in and -46C expected, we used a diesel Heater to keep them warm through this cold snap. We didn't want to risk them getting any frostbite or worse! Even with low humidity no draft, deep litter method and insulated coop a few of our chickens with larger combs still got some frost bite; this was with -60C wind chills, base temp of -50. which we hit for a few nights in a row. Hope your birds are all good and thank you for the great comment. I would recommend the sweeter heater but if its to cold I would still do more however with only 5 birds and a small coop it could be just fine. This cold weather is nothing to mess around with.

Yes the sweeter heater works amazing the chickens love it but the past week it couldn’t keep them warm enuf so we installed a diesel heater for the really cold months we get at - 45C
-45 is very cold for sure. Gotta take care of them like you said 😊

That's so interesting about the light and egg laying, quite a bit of work required to keep chickens 🐔 in Canada aye... ya for eggs though so expensive in New Zealand these days
Yes it is a lot of work to get set up but then after that its just enjoying your chicken friends, general cleaning and maintenance. We never knew how much joy they would bring our family. Egg prices have defiantly come down here but the quality and taste of farm fresh eggs is amazing. Also we have been selling our extra eggs for the daughters piggy bank so that's an added bonus. nice heater! good idea - chickens don't always need direct heat - they will seek it out if they need it! do your chickens stop laying between seasons for a bit like ours do? the auto door opener is really cool, eh!
Yes they will seek it out when they are cold and the heater doesn’t heat the hole coop just the tops of the chickens. Yes they will stop laying without sunlight, our sun sets at 430pm and rises at 8am this time of year, the door is a must dont have to lock them up or let them out just have to check to Make sure everyone made it in. it’s ok in the summer but this one will work in the winter because it has a power cord not just batteries.
