(Note: the chicks she bought came with Marek’s. I had mine vaxed.) Every single home made recipe has a substantial amount of sunflower seeds in them for the protein! I do feed Scratch n Peck mash because it’s less processed and add a little black oil sunflower seed every other day for the added protein. Plus, I’ve been giving the girls 2 suet cakes from your recipe once a week with the coconut oil. They also get S&P scratch in the afternoon with a little more corn added as we are getting colder. Is there such a thing as “too much fat”?!? How do I know what is too much?? Their feed consumption goes up and down. Some days it’s about 2 cups for 6 hens (22 weeks) and sometimes it’s less. @@ASmileAdayful There is too much conflicting info for us newbies. My hens aren’t fat in the least. My leghorn is very slim and I always make sure she gets her own treats. @@lrg613 Oh my goodness I saw that woman's video as well and I felt so bad for her! Between the Marek's and the fatty liver, I'm sure she's really going through it. I am hesitant to go against what the folks who did the necropsy told her, however, their conclusions are certainly influenced by studies done in factory farms. Chickens are scavengers and have for millennia adapted to a variety of foods. This doesn't mean that overfeeding can't happen in a backyard flock, but in a flock that has enough space, enough enrichment, and a balanced diet, I'd say it's probably not anything she did. ❤

I have 1 chicken that prefers her feed over "treats"... I call her derpina for a reason. She's a derp 😂 she will pick at the treats, then walk away. She is also at the bottom of the pecking order... that may have something to do with it lol.
We just got our first 3 hens. Looking forward to learning this process and hopefully increasing our flock to 10-15 next year when we know how to do this! Thanks for these advices and content!
Hi Dahlia, does your netting help deter the hawks? I set up a netting like that, but the hawk still came to the chicken area & got 4 of my babies! So sad!!
My chickens were not laying this winter. I started feeding them biochar. Their combs and waddles turned bright red the next day. We got our first egg three days after and now every other day. Two eggs yesterday, January 10. Coincidence? I always boost the nutrients before the molt. Cat food, sardines, yogurt. Nothing was working I’m convinced it was the biochar.
Omg why haven't I thought of using the outdoor heated bowl for warm food before!!!? I have them out there in the winter time to provide unfrozen water. Thank you for the super helpful tips!!
So. It snowed last night here. My chickens went to run out of the door when I opened it and came to a solid stop the second their feet hit the snow. 😂. They stood staring a bit all bunched up at the door and then ran back in the coop. 😅. Half of them finally came out about 10 minutes later. (And I took the time to take up the run for them so it wasn’t snow covered).
Hi!! I just ran across your videos as I was searching about my chicken sneezing. ❤ all the info you share! I saw you at Morher Earth News Fair & loved your presentation! I bought your book!! ❤️
What also is very helpful for chickens in Winter, is to feed them a Bit of Cat food or Dog food for more Protein. They Love it and they do so much better with the extra Protein.
I kept a few easter eggers and gave the rest of the chickens away so that I could order a new flock last April first. So the few old chickens give us a few eggs, but I am getting a few Cuckoo Maran eggs. Small but they are starting. Because we are in cold eastern Wa. I DON'T EXPECT MUCH UNTIL END OF Jan.
Has anyone else had issues with scratch and peck changing their formula? They used to have a variety of seed and grain, but the past few months we open the bags to find mostly wheat grain and hardly anything else. My chickens have stopped laying with this feed. It is normal for them to slow down in winter, but they completely stopped and it coincided with the dietary change. And yes, I have compared the bag from what we used to get and what we get now, the labels are exactly the same, but what is in the bag is entirely different. Please tell me I'm not alone in this, no one seems to be talking about it online.
Im new to your channel but i truly enjoy your upbeat and funny videos. Very informative! Great editing job too. Im looking into getting backyard chicken this coming spring spring. Thanks
I lost my porcelain duccle rooster cockeral a week ago, he was picked on a lot, bottom of the pecking order. Had i known it was to the point he didnt want to roost with the flock, i would have pulled him and brought him in like i did for his sister. He either didnt feel like roosting with them becase of bullying or just didnt feel like pushing his way into their little loft since they tend to block the opening, perhaps he didnt see any room. I was beyond heart broken, especially since he froze alone. Im devastated but even if i had placed him up in the loft, usually my presence wakes everyone up and the come down to be nosey. But now my birds are in a spare bedroom because im too afraid to leave them out in below freezing temps.
The real snow started here, but not too much for the chickens to stay "inside" yet. Once the temperatures stay below freezing I stop feeding the fermented feed because it just freezes. I grow barley sprouts all winter to supplement their pellets. Yes, the trays take over part of the kitchen, but I have complete snow cover 4-5 months every year. I'm gonna check out your flock block recipe.
Week before last when I had to keep my girls cooped up because of the temperature, I thought I should add some greens to their diet. I scattered some kale leaves and you’d have thought I’d dropped a handful of weasels!
Hi Iam going thru huge bag feed a week for 12 chickens I leave food out all day should I be judging feeding like twice a day ? I also started fermenting there feed and I give every moring am I feeding to much they also get fresh veg greens twice week Ty love your videos great info 😊
I 've noticed over the last 3 months their layer grains have changed 😣 Last month the bag was full of empty hills. Noticed the color is different and the girls hardly eat any of it-they just throw it out !#$@! Been looking for a new layer grain. Your not crazy- your right on the money!
I’m sorry that happened! You should definitely contact them, though. They take the quality of their product very seriously and would want to know if there’s an issue.
I use lay pellets because it is more efficient 9:49 t. I keep 2 roosters with 7 maran hens in one pen, Auracannas have a rooster , flock of 8, 20 assorted hens, flock of 18 in larger shed and pen have 3 roosters. The roosters are for just keeping the hens happy.
If you have electricity in coop. I found an old crockpot on low from a thrift store. Warn girls that it's not a hot tub my girls would cluster around it for heat.we lived on Colorado.
I’m getting ready to start raising chickens and I know there are lots of hawks in my neighborhood. It sounds like you don’t worry about that with them being free range. Should I worry?
A quick way to remove chlorination from your water is to place a piece of charcoal, activated carbon, even wood or your finger into the water for a few minutes.... plastic does not work well... the organic material inserted will quickly absorb most of the chlorine gas in the water... If you test for chlorine comparing an untreated with organic material cup versus a cup that was treated, the treated cup will often show little to no chlorine remaining. It was a demonstration used by many charcoal filter vendors, but as a chemist I know that chlorine is quickly absorbed... which is why after a shower or swimming in a public ppol, you often get that chlorinated taste and effect in your body... you and the other swimmers/showeres absorbed most of the chlorine in the water that came in contact with your skin.
@@n2skcmo My method eliminates any chloramines that were used in water treatment or formed from the reaction of the chlorinating source with any amino acids or ammonia/urea, etc in the treated water as it flowed from the treatment plant to your home.... A lot of older municiple water systems are quite old. Akron Ohio had water mains that were over 100 years old back in the 1980's when I lived there, and contamination was common. In certain parts of the city the water often had a brownish tinge and a thin scum would form if you boiled the water.
so apparently I am not going to be able to put the fermented feed in my hanging feeder? And lots of us don't have power in the coop. I feed them 16% crumbles, will that ferment? My girls love yogurt too!!!!
Is that a silkie or a polish? (the gold with the face feathers). I'm guessing Polish, because that would be a big silkie. I guess a rooster would meet that size though.
All the grass is gone in my chicken yard. Do you have any ideas how to get the grass to grow back. A certain weed has taken over the yard that they do not like to eat.
My question, what happens if your green lettuce has salamilla, if I'm spelling it correctly. If I know about it won't feed it to the birds, but by accident what happens to the bird ?
I live in the city and have to keep my chickens confined in a run. We have built them deluxe accommodations. We love our girls. However, I have been leaving the feed out for them so they can free feed rodents and other critters can get into the chicken enclosure. Is it bad for me to leave the feed out for them? Will they overeat?
I cook breakfast everyday for my birds so my birds have a hot meal. And I grow grass in my house during winter and give to my birds after it grows 3 inches. And grow mealworms and crickets to give them live bugs in the winter. And I never leave any food overnight. Everything gets cleaned up at night and extra food gets put in a metal can. I rake or sweep up food that is on the ground so no unwanted visitors come at night. All my extra bags of food is locked in a old freezer so no unwanted visitors can get to it. I don't want any of my hens to lay eggs in the winter because I think they need a break from laying eggs and I saved the eggs that they laid in the spring and summer on a shelf for winter. FYI those can last up to a year sitting there without rotting. So I don't know what else to feed them during the winter.
So honestly I don't give my chickens leftovers, I will buy them their own watermelon buy them their own bag of kale buy them their own cabbage buy them their own broccoli lol I know not everybody can I do eat the stuff but they get fresh cuttings not leftovers I love my baby so much I have 30 chickens two of them are roosters
We free range our chickens, but I also always make pellets and some kitchen scraps available. But my chickens WILL NOT eat greens. They leave them behind every time. Any suggestions?
Sounds like they have access to a lot of greenery from free ranging. Maybe once they don't have access to grass they will try the greens? I wouldn't worry about it too much but you could also try only giving them as much feed as they will finish by the afternoon, and then giving them some greens for the second half of the day. ❤️
Who noticed the halo on Philippe? ❤🐔😇💔

My husband just built the chickens and ducks a huge run thankfully right on time cause we are getting a lot of snow already and very cold temps! This is my first winter with them and I’m constantly checking on them 😅 thanks for the video!
I got a bunch of leftover pumpkins from a friends nursery and thats been a nice free snack for them. I crack one in half with a shovel and give half to my 6 chickens and half to the wild birds maybe twice a week.
Got to love those noisy little call ducks. I've done this in the summer but cheers, I'm going to start fermenting today.
Im bad. I used to get test pop. Popcorn has to b popped to check the moisture. Free & they loved it. Winter i got bread that was under/over bakedfrom sandwich shops. Nice supplement & switch of diet. Also not the best is stale chips... but chickens escape, they come running when u shake the bag... great for pigs & goats too
I have 1 chicken that prefers her feed over "treats"... I call her derpina for a reason. She's a derp 😂 she will pick at the treats, then walk away. She is also at the bottom of the pecking order... that may have something to do with it lol.
I have the same thing going on with one of my girls.
We just got our first 3 hens.
Looking forward to learning this process and hopefully increasing our flock to 10-15 next year when we know how to do this!
Thanks for these advices and content!
I feed mine a bit of chopped hot dogs and a can of tuna once a week . Especially in winter
I gave mine canned white tuna today and they didn’t touch it, but they did eat diced peaches 🙄
I feed ground beef and they go crazy for it. I also feed it to my cats. If the cats don't eat it, the hens get it.

Raw or cooked?
@@TearDrop455 I feed it raw and they love it. You can cook it if that makes you more comfortable.

Thanks 😊
Hi Dahlia, does your netting help deter the hawks? I set up a netting like that, but the hawk still came to the chicken area & got 4 of my babies! So sad!!
Oh no!! So sorry to hear that 😢
I just started fermenting the Scratch and Peck mash for my chickens. Big game changer.
As always, great advice!! Also, I see someone got their hair done and it looks great!!
I like your kindness and flexibility about taking care of chickens the best way you can afford. I love that waterer too. TY
What's your homemade flock block recipe
Here you go! th-cam.com/video/lCp5AErq5b0/w-d-xo.html
Thank you🐔🐓🐣🐤🐥
I'm so glad you asked cuz I was about to. I was looking all over for it in the description section! 😂
Shrimp tails? Do you mean the outer shell? That would be great!
I do feed sardines once a week and they all agree on liking them.
Hi!! I just ran across your videos as I was searching about my chicken sneezing. ❤ all the info you share! I saw you at Morher Earth News Fair & loved your presentation! I bought your book!! ❤️
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
What also is very helpful for chickens in Winter, is to feed them a Bit of Cat food or Dog food for more Protein. They Love it and they do so much better with the extra Protein.
I absolutely love your videos! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you madam president for the great information
I kept a few easter eggers and gave the rest of the chickens away so that I could order a new flock last April first. So the few old chickens give us a few eggs, but I am getting a few Cuckoo Maran eggs. Small but they are starting. Because we are in cold eastern Wa. I DON'T EXPECT MUCH UNTIL END OF Jan.
Pellets or crumbles? Can they be fermented. What about oats sunflower and corn?
Love the video. The duck call in the background sounds like it was laughing. 🐤
You go, Dalia love to see the present working so hard by getting the right info out there. God bless you happy Thanksgiving.
My chickens get booze for winter, they become alcoholics to stay warm, during Xmas, i crack open eggs with egg nog inside.
I guess that's one way to do it 🤣
Lol
It helps them fight off head colds as well...

What did the company say when you contacted them about their feed changes?
What kind of grass is in your run? I can't get grass to go in mine, so what is your secret?
God will help you walk through this. I FEEL YOUR PAIN😢
I'm sorry 😞❤️
My heart goes out to you. Forgive yourself, it sounds like you love your feathered friends.
Thanks so much. I encouraged that I'm doing a lot of the right things and you've given me ideas of other things to give them. 😀
Great tips & the heated bowl is one of the best tips!
You’re hilarious the best too sending love to you and your family from Dallas Tx we have close to two acres , Im sure I can my fatty Gallinas here
Dalia, can your give me an insight about the rooster comb with dots
Can you ferment layer crumble chicken feed that's what im feeding them currently would like to switch
Love the name! Chickenlandia! So CUTE!! How are you able to keep grass with your chickens! I want grass!
Winter menu planning in progress: truffle-infused worms 😬
Fancy!!
I buy discounted veggies that are going out of date in a few days. If not used quickly I freeze them. Good to know about the oatmeal.
I love Scratch and Peck. Ferment it all year and actually they don’t eat as much.
Do you have a cover over the chicken yard?
Hi Iam going thru huge bag feed a week for 12 chickens I leave food out all day should I be judging feeding like twice a day ? I also started fermenting there feed and I give every moring am I feeding to much they also get fresh veg greens twice week Ty love your videos great info 😊
Glad your channel was recommended to me...thanks for all the tips..just subscribed!
I 've noticed over the last 3 months their layer grains have changed 😣
Last month the bag was full of empty hills.
Awwww Philippe.
How long is fermented food good for? Is there a certain amount of time from when you make it before it goes bad?
Is it okay to feed my flock layer feed if I have a rooster?
Different people say different things, layers pellets have higher calcium than a rooster needs. Some people say it’s fine, others don’t.
Your videos are the best 🙏☺️💜 this is so so useful 💕💕💕🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️Happy happy Thursday!!!🫶🫶🫶🫶🩷💜🩷🩷🙌🙌💕🥰🥰🥰
Love the color of the green chicken coop!! What color is it? Thanks for sharing!
What can I do for the water not to freeze. Also do I need to put a heat lamp in their coop.
If you have electricity in coop. I found an old crockpot on low from a thrift store. Warn girls that it's not a hot tub my girls would cluster around it for heat.we lived on Colorado.
I let my chickens have a winter break so they can recuperate lost minerals and let their bodies rest.
I’m getting ready to start raising chickens and I know there are lots of hawks in my neighborhood. It sounds like you don’t worry about that with them being free range. Should I worry?
Great ideas 💡 🐔
You could also just leave the water out for 24 hours and let the chlorine evaporate.
@@shdwbnndbyyt Ewwww! Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
May I ask what type of grass you're growing in the run?
so apparently I am not going to be able to put the fermented feed in my hanging feeder? And lots of us don't have power in the coop. I feed them 16% crumbles, will that ferment? My girls love yogurt too!!!!
Is that a silkie or a polish? (the gold with the face feathers). I'm guessing Polish, because that would be a big silkie. I guess a rooster would meet that size though.
How do you make that flock block that you were talking about? I don’t see it.
Hello, can i give corn silage to my chickens for winter season?
Never seen that brand food in any of my feed stores
Is salt in leftovers bad for chickens?
All the grass is gone in my chicken yard. Do you have any ideas how to get the grass to grow back. A certain weed has taken over the yard that they do not like to eat.
My question, what happens if your green lettuce has salamilla, if I'm spelling it correctly. If I know about it won't feed it to the birds, but by accident what happens to the bird ?
What kind of grass is grown in your coop
I live in the city and have to keep my chickens confined in a run. We have built them deluxe accommodations. We love our girls. However, I have been leaving the feed out for them so they can free feed rodents and other critters can get into the chicken enclosure. Is it bad for me to leave the feed out for them? Will they overeat?
How do you know if you overfeed a chicken?
My chickens are really molting.
Hello new follower how much is to much protein
I feel like my chickens attack their good as if they haven't eaten in days lol. Ibelieve it's a 1/4 of a cup per bird?
