I spent a month in Tamarindo in the 90’s backpacking with 11 other guys. I remember spending $2 / night to stay in a large concrete building that had 10 beds, a concrete floor, a toilet and a tap. One night around 3 am, a skunk came into our room. He was on the bed next to me about 1’ away and it was so dark I had no idea what it was. Let’s just say the next 20 minutes was extremely memorable,. We had a few close calls but never got sprayed and eventually he ran full tilt under a 2 inch gap under the door (about 30’ away) and into the night. We had Christmas dinner on the beach at a local family home/restaurant. Get this, $10 US for 3 lobster tails, a ton of other food, desert and 2 beers. We tipped the owners a lot and everyone hugged afterwards. I remember a German Shepherd getting out of a hotel lobby / fenced area (old lady ran the hotel and had it and a Rottweiler for protection) after a girl went behind the desk to hang up her room key. The dog went on a rampage, biting her and another girl and then killing a large iguana. We were playing crib and scattered to safety while yelling at others on the street to alert them. It was a crazy scene. The girl was bitten quite badly. The owner eventually retrieved her dog, hit it and then went on like nothing happened. I believe it was called “Dolly’s” or something similar. I see that hotel is no longer there (by the Enterprise rental car). Last thing, there was a crocodile near us when we were surfing off the main beach. I didn’t know until I got on shore. I saw on the news about a year later that a croc killed a tourist. Anyways, it was an adventure of a lifetime being in Costa Rica for 6 months and travelling with your best friends. Tamarindo was amazing and a great place to learn to surf. It has certainly changed over the years and if I wasn’t dealing with health issues I’d certainly go back. Have fun and savour every moment while you visit this amazing country.
@@mccullochmike crazy stories!!! I can’t even image what Tamarindo was like back then!! Thank you for sharing those with us here

Thank you Tammy!!!!
What I like about tamarindo the American/tico mix pretty cool in my opinion. Good vibes!!
Absolutely!! It’s not the most “local” feeling place in Costa Rica, but a great place for vacationing!!
These videos have influenced the boom! Advertising works!
Absolutely! No doubt about it
I almost died laughing over the tire comment, we've lived here for 10 years and twice we've had tires almost come off after having them worked on. My advice do not talk to the person working on your tire he will forget what he's doing and not tighten the lug nuts. The same type of thing happened at a hardware store, I was talking to the gentleman while he was checking the paint and he didn't close the lid completely on one can. He then loaded them into boxes, put him on a dolly and proceeded to pour paint all through the hardware store. 😂No more small chat while they are working.
Lmao! That’s hilarious 😂
Thanks for sharing your experience in the comments also!!
The only thing I hate about Tamarindo is the price to buy or rent a property are higher than ever, not even the locals can afford anymore. 😢
Yep, that is absolutely true
Hi I’m planning visiting Tamarindo, but I need to find a job there. I just graduated from culinary school. I was wondering you can tell me something about getting jobs there. Thank you
Hey there. Are you Tico? If you are, it will be easy to get a job with so many restaurants here in this area. I cannot help you get a job tho. Good luck!
@@TheirHappyTrails I’m from Guatemala, I hope I can find something there thank you!
@LuisBolanos-tz3ff claro amigo , de fijo encontrarás algún trabajo en hotelería o restaurantes saludos
@@LuisBolanos-tz3ff absolutamente
Way overpriced, swamped with rude, entitled idiots and every wannabe realtor on the planet jacking up prices even more. The ocean and beach still rock, as long as you go before 7am.
@@joshuamiller4797 I don’t totally disagree with what your saying, but the entitled idiot part was a little much 😂
oh yuck tamarindo is crap
Everyone is welcomed to their opinion:) why do you think it’s “crap”
I was in Tamarindo 20 years ago before it was Americanized. My friends who travel mostly Central/South America have been there recently and said everything has changed, including the prices. If you want to experience old school Costa Rica, visit Guatemala. Amazing country.
